  1. I don't see much point in having 3 MLB-caliber defensive shortstops, so I assume one of Adames, Turang or Ortiz will head out the door in the near future - most likely Adames obviously. I just don't really know what we need in return, given that we might give each of Ashby, Hall, Ross and Gasser a clear shot to win a starting rotation spot this spring. Also, we're already viewed as a .500-level team (or worse) after this Burnes trade, so how do you trade Adames without making us even worse in 2024? I guess we could use a right-handed starting pitcher (having lost Burnes, Woodruff, Houser and Teheran) and another solid bat. If we're willing to take on sizeable salary from another club, maybe that would be the key to not further weakening the MLB roster in an Adames trade. Maybe we could take on an expensive SP from the Rangers, Blue Jays, Braves or Astros, assuming one of them signs Snell or Montgomery.
  2. I can't help but think that reduced Minor League roster rules are impacting the signing of minor league free agents, particularly starting pitchers in the case of the Brewers. Last offseason, we signed Colin Rea, Thomas Pannone, Collin Wiles, Robert Stock, Pedro Fernandez and Tobias Myers - who'd all predominantly started in AAA, Japan, Korea or Mexico in 2022. Thus far this offseason, the only signee which fits this profile is Easton McGee, but I believe he's still recovering from surgery. The next-closest signee is Chad Patrick (21 games in AA, 6 games in AAA in 2023). Maybe we want to see our young minor leaguers at Spring Training in March before making some tough cut decisions at those levels, before then adding available AAA-level free agents. We'll see. Or maybe I'm just bored and anxious and the experienced AAA-level minor league level signings (some with early opt outs) will come over the next 6 weeks.
  3. I've not seen any follow-on confirmation on Janson Junk, but I think that where there's smoke there's usually fire with these things. If I remember right (David Freitas a few years ago), the Brewers can collect a fee for releasing him, so that negotiation may even be the hold-up. If Junk somehow stays, I assume we'll keep him stretched out as starting depth in AAA (catastrophe insurance for the Brewers), even if his best chance in MLB may actually be as a reliever. He just doesn't register enough strikeouts as a starter, even though his velocity is decent. However, we were relatively quick to give up on Ethan Small as a starter, so who really knows.
  4. How dare they!: Twins Sign Caleb Boushley To Minor League Deal You'd better treat him well over there in St. Paul!!
  5. Here's a handy image and a link to the Brewers' press release which summarizes a lot of the moves:
  6. The team has also confirmed the coaching staff for the ACL Brewers (led by Rafael Neda), DSL Brewers 1 (led by Victor Rey - formerly with the DSL Yankees) and DSL Brewers 2 (led by Natanael Mejia):
  7. And here are other system-wide Player Development and High-Performance staff, including former Shuckers’ Manager Mike Guerrero as Roving Infield Instructor:
  8. Manager Rick Sweet is back for another super season with AAA Nashville:
  9. Manager Victor Estevez keeps climbing the ranks, now moving up to High-A Wisconsin:
  10. Nick Stanley gets the promotion to Manager of the Low-A Carolina Mudcats:
  11. Manager Joe Ayrault moves from the High-A Timber Rattlers to AA Biloxi. What other changes are in store?:
  12. Adding Donaldson may work and hopefully not cost much: Against RHP Yelich - LF Contreras - C Frelick - DH/RF Hoskins - 1B Black - 3B Adames - SS Mitchell - CF Chourio/Bauers - RF/DH Turang - 2B Against LHP Yelich - LF Contreras - C/DH Hoskins - 1B Adames - SS Frelick - RF Donaldson - 3B Black/Haase - DH/C Chourio - CF Monasterio - 2B
  13. I guess the Astros probably have an eye on Garrett Mitchell: Astros Open To Adding Lefty-Hitting Outfielder
  14. $5-6m seems cheap to me for a 2-time gold glover (in RF), left-handed hitter with pop. Hopefully this bodes well for us to get an even better first baseman. Nationals, Joey Gallo Agree To One-Year Deal
  15. Quero vs. Contreras will hopefully be an excellent problem to have -> essentially the best catching tandem in the league from 2025-203X, with each also getting plenty of time at DH if they're hitting well. And if Quero's not hitting well, that wouldn't actually hurt us given how inexpensive he is.
  16. On Friday, RHP Christian Mejias got in a little work: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K - in Aragua’s 8-4 loss to Caracas. C Brian Navarreto is presumably state-side now to attend to his hand injury. Back in Puerto Rico, his Carolina team lost 4-1 to Caguas, so now trail the best-of-9 series 4 games to 2. Manager Victor Estevez thanked Escogido club for the opportunity to manage the team which has existed since 1921:
  17. I really appreciate the analysis! Hopefully CF-Rod adjusts well to AAA ball in 2024 to set himself up to join the MLB rotation at some point in 2025. Marco Estrada produced over 11 WAR and made over $50 million in his career, so it would be quite respectable if Carlos F. Rodriguez achieves something along those lines. His youth means he could even have more solid MLB years than Estrada did, but let's get through 2024 first. Go Carlos!!
  18. From Thursday: Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido squad mustered only 4 singles and 1 walk in their 4-0 loss to Estrellas Orientales, falling short of their quest to reach the Dominican Championship Series. Better luck next winter RHP Christian Mejias' Aragua team defeated La Guaira 3-0, but were mathematically eliminated from reaching the Venezuelan Champion Series due to Lara's win elsewhere
  19. Rough Wednesday results: - RHP Christian Mejias - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua’s 4-2 loss to Caracas - Manager Victor Estevez’s Escogido team lost 4-3 to Cibao - C Brian Navarreto’s Carolina club lost Game 5 of their series 3-2 to Caguas
  20. Here's an article on catcher Brian Navarreto being absent on the field (due to a hand injury), but still making his presence felt from the dugout for Carolina in the Puerto Rico Championship Series. (English version using Google Translate) It mentions that Navarreto played with the injury for about 10 days before stopping and that the Brewers are recalling him today. As to game action, his Carolina teammates defeated Caguas 10-4 on Tuesday to even the best-of-9 series at 2 games apiece. Elsewhere, Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido Lions got a big 8-1 win over the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Republic. The two teams are now tied for second place with just 2 games remaining. I'm assuming that Escogido holds the tiebreaker (4-2 record vs. Licey in this Round Robin phase) so can clinch a berth in the championship series by winning out.
  21. I'm not surprised that we've kept our foot on the pedal in terms of the quality (3 highly-ranked studs) and size (35 players) of the international class. However, if MLB is really going to implement reduced aggregate MILB rosters this year, it likely means we'll see a LOT of cuts across MILB in early June. It also means the days of the vast majority of Brewers' DSL players getting two seasons to show their stuff may be behind us. I actually think that this constitutes a business opportunity (e.g. sign 120 available young players dirt-cheap every June, develop them in a new league for 2 years, then sell the best back to affiliated baseball), but I don't have the time or money to pursue it.
  22. Each of Junk, Patrick and Myers has a case to start or be in the ‘pen. With McGee perhaps still recovering from TJ surgery, I assume we’ll keep most of them stretched out. I also think it’s likely that one of Perkins, Wiemer or Mitchell starts the season in AAA, which only adds to the AAA OF glut. As usual, a few players will likely be stashed in April-May: Development List, injured list, ACL roster, temporarily inactive, etc.
  23. Summary of Sunday Action: RHP Christian Mejias - 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua's 3-2 loss to Margarita, which dropped Aragua to a 3-8 record in Round Robin play with 5 games remaining in Venezuela C Brian Navarrato was absent again, as Carolina fell 4-2 to Caguas. They now trail the best-of-9 championship series 2 games to 1 in Puerto Rico Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido Lions got a key win, 8-5 over the Licey Tigers. They now trail Licey by 1 game for second place (and a berth in the championship series), with 3 games remaining in the Dominican Republic
  24. On Saturday, C Brian Navarreto was absent again (right hand issue), as Carolina dropped Game 2 against Caguas, 13-4, levelling the best-of-9 championship series in Puerto Rico. Checking in on Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido squad in the Dominican Republic, they grabbed a 7-6 win over Cibao to improve to a 6-8 record in round robin play. They're 2 games behind 2nd place Licey with 4 games remaining, with a big match-up against Licey on Sunday.
  25. C Brian Navarreto is out nursing an injury to his right hand, but his Carolina teammates came through with a 3-2 victory over Caguas in 11 innings to take Game 1 of the Puerto Rico championship series. Elsewhere, RHP Christian Mejias couldn’t help Aragua from falling to a 3-6 record in Venezuelan round robin play: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in their 9-6 loss to Lara.
