  1. Rough time for Biloxi after losing Wiemer, Frelick, Mitchell, Reetz, Monasterio, Lutz and Campbell. It should be really interesting to see how Carlos F. Rodriguez fares in AA ball next year. Will he pick up a few ticks of speed through offseason work?
  2. Jon Singleton powered Nashville to a 6-5 victory with a homer and four hits. Hedbert Perez and Carolina refused to be denied. Big days from Jeferson Quero and Cam Devanney weren’t enough for Wisconsin and Biloxi. Exciting 2022 second round draft pick Jacob Misiorowski lasted just five batters in his scheduled short debut for the Mudcats, who came back late to defeat Columbia in extra innings. Nashville’s early lead slipped away before the club scored two in the bottom of the 9th to walk off Memphis, the last on a Joey Wiemer full count walk. Wisconsin had no answers against Peoria, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-3 defeat. Victor Castaneda kept Biloxi in the game over six solid innings, but the bullpen got rocked in an 8-2 loss to Rocket City. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Singleton, Perez, Quero, Devanney and Castaneda, with an honorable mention to Brice Turang. Transactions: OF Esteury Ruiz recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Luis Perdomo recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville RHP Noah Zavolas released from AA Biloxi (the 26-year old last pitched on August 5th and went on the season-ending injured list on August 11th) Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Memphis 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds 'Walk' Off Redbirds 1B Jon Singleton (4-for-4, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) did the early heavy lifting, knocking in three runs in his first two at-bats, the latter a two-run bomb in the 3rd inning to stake the Sounds to a 4-0 lead. That’s his 22nd home run of 2022 to go along with an absurd 99 walks. The middle innings saw Memphis grab a 5-4 lead, though Nashville was just waiting for the bottom of the 9th inning to send the home crowd happy. Three consecutive singles from OF Sal Frelick (1-for-4, walk), SS Pablo Reyes (2-for-5, double) and 2B Brice Turang (3-for-5, RBI) tied the game at 5-5 before Memphis intentionally walked Singleton and then accidentally walked OF Joey Wiemer to end the game 6-5. How does Mr. Turang look at second base, you ask?: The victory gives Nashville a 2-1 series lead and keeps the team 2.5 games ahead of Columbus for first place in the division. Three Quick Strikes: A late scratch of RHP Dylan File forced RHP Marcus Walden (3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) into starting on short rest, though he managed very well over three shutout innings, before being lifted after two singles opened the 4th inning. RHPs JC Mejia, Hobie Harris and Trevor Kelley combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, with Kelley earning the win for his effort. Pedro Severino was another bright spot, going 3-for-4 as Nashville outhit Memphis 14-8. RHPs Zack Brown and Jake Cousins struggled a bit in their combined two innings of work, conceding three runs (two earned) and allowing two inherited runners to score. Friday’s outlook: After just four games in AA, 23-year old LHP Robert Gasser (3.82 ERA in High-A/AA) will make his AAA debut for the Sounds, who aim to extend their series lead. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Rocket City 8, Biloxi 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Big Seventh Sink Shuckers Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (6 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks) danced through traffic over six innings to give the Shuckers a chance, before the bullpen entered and the wheels came off in the bottom of the 7th inning. The offensive bright spot was SS Cam Devanney (2-for-4, HR, walk, RBI), who walked and scored in the 1st inning, then connected on his 19th homer of 2022 in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game 2-2. LHP Clayton Andrews’ post-injury road back to AAA may appear longer after retiring just two of the seven batters he faced and exiting with the club down 4-2 and the bases loaded. This was his fourth appearance of 2022 and second this year with Biloxi. Don’t worry Clayton – better days are ahead! Three Quick Strikes: Unfortunately, things didn’t get better when RHP Robbie Baker entered in relief of Andrews, as he beaned a batter on his first pitch, then gave up two singles as the deficit ballooned to 8-2. At least RHP Robbie Hitt added a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in his short work. The team went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base, but DH/2B Felix Valerio (1-for-2, 2 walks) reached base three times and six Shuckers collected at least one hit on the day. Biloxi’s led every game in the series (2-0 in Game One, 5-1 in Game Two, 1-0 in Game Three), but unfortunately appear to be out-gunned against this strong Rocket City club (73-50 record). Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr gets the call to start on Friday, with Biloxi needing a repeat of his last outing (6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 6 Ks) to avoid a 4-0 series deficit. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 12, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Peoria Pounces on Wisconsin Miscues Wisconsin led this game 3-2 in the 4th inning on the strength of solo shots from DH/C Darrien Miller (1-for-4, HR, walk, RBI) and C Jeferson Quero (3-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs), but the game was all Chiefs from that point. Starting RHP Israel Puello (5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) struggled to hold that lead, giving up three consecutive hits in the bottom of the 4th inning as the team fell behind 4-3. Peoria grabbed four unearned runs against RHP Miguel Guerrero in a sloppy 6th inning, then another four runs off of struggling RHP Tyler Gillies in the 7th inning to extend their lead to 12-3. Three Quick Strikes: The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the 4th inning, but collected just one run after two strikeouts and an out on the bases, followed by Manager Joe Ayrault being ejected. There were unfortunately no highlights for OF Jackson Chourio on this 0-for-5 day, but it was a welcome sight to have him back manning center field for the first time since a recent injury. RHP Christian Tripp was solid in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and 2B Ethan Murray collected two singles on a 2-for-4 day. Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.20 ERA in Low-A/High-A) will make his second High-A start (5 1/3 IP, 2 R, 8 Ks in his first one), trying to lead Wisconsin to a 3-1 series advantage. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Columbia 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Perez Hits Tenth Inning Walk-Off in 7-6 Victory The exciting debut of 2022 second round draft pick 20-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (1/3 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 4 BB, 0 K) was a bit of a letdown, as he walked four of the five batters he faced and exited after 32 pitches. Of course, it was always going to be a short first appearance for Mr. Misiorowski. Spencer Michaelis (Twitter: @smichaelis234) summarized the performance as follows, “Well Misiorowski didn’t make it out of the 1st inning (pitch count). He got squeezed on a few that Trackman thought were strikes. Including on 3-2 to the lead off. Then he had an auto ball for a BB after a long 3-2 battle. Fastball was *very* lively and touched 100 though. Slider backed up on him a few times but also threw some pretty decent ones. Was very close to a 1-2-3 inning with the tight zone and auto ball. Baseball is a funny game sometimes. Most importantly, his pure stuff does look pretty special.” That said, the GAME was terrific, as Carolina battled back to tie Columbia three times, the last being a two-run 8th inning to send the contest into extras, in which the Mudcats prevailed 7-6 on a DH/OF Hedbert Perez (3-for-5, two doubles, 2 RBIs) run-scoring single to bring home OF Hendry Mendez. Mr. Perez was involved throughout, as he also doubled and scored to tie the game 3-3 in the 2nd inning, then drove home OF Luis Castillo (1-for-4, walk) with an RBI double in the 6th inning to narrow the deficit to 6-4. RHP Alexander Vallecillo (5 IP, 3 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) got the longman’s duty on this day, battling through five innings of three-run ball before exiting with the team down 6-4. The 8th inning rally started with walks by 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-3, two walks) and Castillo, followed by run-scoring singles from OF Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-4, walk, RBI) and 3B Alberis Ferrer (1-for-2, walk, sac fly, 2 RBIs, SB) to knot the game at 6-6. Chirino also singled to open up the bottom of the 10th inning. LHP Pablo Garabitos (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) collected a deserved win with three shutout innings of work, including not allowing Manfred’s ghost to score in the 10th inning. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Trevor Tietz did very well to induce a groundball double play to strand all three runners left on base by Misiorowski in the 1st inning, but then ran into trouble himself in the 2nd inning, giving up two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsmen. Not to be lost in the heroics, 2B Robert Moore smacked his first home run in the Brewers’ organization to tie the game 1-1 in the 1st inning. Obviously working his way back to full strength after a recent absence, this was 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr.’s first game back in the field, although he went 0-for-4 and exited after eight innings. Friday’s outlook: RHP Max Lazar is scheduled to make his second rehab start with the Mudcats, who seek a win to tie the series 2-2 at home against Columbia. 4. C Jakson Reetz has found a new opportunity with Kansas City AAA affiliate Omaha
  5. It's worse than you thought, as he opted out of that Rochester contract as well. I imagine he's figuring out a new plan for 2023 now: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/david-dahl-opts-out-of-minor-league-deal-with-nationals.html
  6. Jackson Chourio was a welcome sight in the Wisconsin lineup and had just enough strength to plant a ball over the left field wall for a key 3-run blast, giving starting Carlos F. Rodriguez more runs than he could possibly need in a 5-2 win. Carolina’s 5-2 victory was a true team effort, with three pitchers making their debut in full season ball and Jesus Chirinos delivering a key two-run double. Joey Wiemer connected on his 20th homer of the year, Justin Jarvis had a strong AA debut in Biloxi and Nick Bennett kept the opposition scoreless for nearly five innings, but these efforts weren’t enough as Nashville and Biloxi lost three games on the day. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Rodriguez, Chourio, Jarvis, Bennett and Wiemer. Transactions: RHP Caleb Boushley activated from AAA Nashville's 7-day injured list RHP Raul Mendoza released from ACL Brewers Gold After the game, @ARobsBrewCrew got the scoop that 1B Wes Clarke will be promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin, which would be a helpful addition to a depleted Shuckers’ roster Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 4, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Come Up Short in Series Finale With both teams struggling to connect with runners in scoring position (combined 0-for-13), this was a contest of which team could hit it out of the park more often (three for Durham, one for Nashville). The Sounds welcomed RHP Caleb Boushley (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) back from a recent injury stint and he gave the team an excellent start with two scoreless innings before giving way to RHP Marcus Walden (4 2/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks). OF Joey Wiemer (2-for-4, HR, double, RBI) continued his recent hot stretch, hitting his 5th home run in AAA ball and 20th of the season to give Nashville a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. However, the Bulls responded with a 2-run blast of their own in the bottom half, a solo shot in the 5th inning and a final solo jack in the 8th inning. The Sounds were down 3-1 with two-on and two-out in the top of the 8th inning, but Wiemer couldn’t come through in his final at-bat (first pitch pop out into foul territory). Despite the loss, Nashville won the series 4-2, although it’s first place lead over the Columbus Clippers was cut to 2.5 games. Three Quick Strikes: Each team pulled off an amazing escape of working around a lead-off triple with no damage, with Walden doing it in the 3rd inning and Durham gunning down OF Matt Lipka (2-for-4, triple, SB) on a fly ball double play at home in the 7th inning. Other than the two long balls, Walden actually threw well, not yielding any walks. However, RHP JC Mejia’s recent funk continues, as he yielded the 8th inning homer and has now given up runs in three straight appearances. OF Esteury Ruiz (2-for-4, SB) extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games, although OF Sal Frelick’s unfortunately ended at 12 games. On the bright side, Frelick walked once and didn’t strikeout. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (74-48) returns home after a long road trip to take on Cardinals’ AAA affiliate Memphis (63-59). Expect veteran RHP Josh Lindblom (four runs and 23 strikeouts over last 17 innings pitched) to take the mound in the opening game, looking for his fourth consecutive victory. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Chattanooga 7, Biloxi 3 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Chattanooga 6, Biloxi 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Falls In Both Legs Of Doubleheader With his AA debut about to go off the rails after yielding two 2nd innings runs and a leadoff triple to start the 3rd inning, 22-year old RHP Justin Jarvis (5 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) buckled down to retire nine of the final ten batters he faced, ultimately exiting with the game still tied 2-2. The nightcap saw an even more effective start from LHP Nick Bennett (4 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks), who kept the Lookouts scoreless over nearly five innings of work. Unfortunately, the Shuckers’ offense and bullpen weren’t up to par, as those 2-2 and 0-0 scorelines quickly went to the wayside once the starters exited. After LHP Clayton Andrews ran into trouble in the top of the 6th inning (double, two walks), RHP Arnaldo Hernandez entered with the score tied 2-2, bases full and two outs, only to give up a grand slam to Mike Siani. In the second game, Chattanooga scored all six runs in the top of the 6th inning, three off of RHP Robbie Hitt and three more off of RHP Carlos Luna. The losses mean that the Lookouts took four wins out of five games against Biloxi for the week. Three Quick Strikes: Though they only managed six hits over their 14 innings of work, the Shuckers’ offense wasn’t completely dormant, as C Jason Lopez came through with a 2-RBI infield single in the 2nd inning of Game One to knot things up at 2-2 for awhile. Birthday boy 1B Thomas Dillard (now 25 years old) also added a solo homer to briefly reduce the Game One deficit to 6-3. It’s rough when your 1-and-2 hitters (OF Corey Ray, SS Cam Devanney) go a combined 0-for-12 with six strikeouts, but that’s just how this Sunday went for the Shuckers. Manager Mike Guerrero’s frustration boiled over after two strikeouts in the bottom of the 2nd inning of Game Two, as he was ejected at that point. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (57-60) hits the road to face a strong Rocket City team (70-50 record for the Angels’ AA affiliate). Expect RHP TJ Shook (4.07 ERA in High-A/AA) to be the opening game starter. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, Lansing 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Wisconsin Wins Series Finale from Lugnuts As always, take some time to watch the video highlights put together by Wisconsin’s terrific media team: DH/OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-2, HR, HBP, 3 RBIs) was slated for only three at-bats in his return from injury, but he was of course essential to a much-needed Timber Rattler victory. Chourio’s 3-run blast in the bottom of the third inning was his fifth in High-A ball and 17th of the year, giving starting RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks) a nice cushion up 4-0. Of course, the dominant Rodriguez doesn’t require much run support, as he gave up just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out seven Lugnuts. His ERA in five High-A starts is now a terrific 1.78. Things got dicey in the top of the 8th inning against RHP Jeison Pena, who conceded two singles, two walks and a lineout before exiting in favor of RHP Taylor Floyd with the game 4-2 and two runners on base. Pena was aided by C Jeferson Quero throwing out a runner stealing, then Floyd K’d the only batter he faced on four pitches. Quero (2-for-4, HR, RBI) also added a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning. The win enabled Wisconsin to salvage a 2-4 series loss for the week. Three Quick Strikes: RHP James Meeker (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) pitched a three-up, three-down 9th inning to earn his 12th save of the season, lowering his ERA to 2.70 in the process. 3B Ben Metzinger (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) got an opportunity to lead off in this game and made the most of it, hitting a 1st inning homer (his third of the year) to give the Timber Rattlers an early 1-0 lead. After an inexplicable brawl which saw two players ejected on Saturday night, I’m a bit surprised the umpires allowed Lansing reliever Jorge Juan (who yielded the Chourio homer in this one) to remain in the game after he plunked Chourio with the first pitch of his 5th inning plate appearance. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (61-58) will bus to play Cardinals’ affiliate Peoria (51-69). RHP Stiven Cruz (0.75 ERA in 12 High-A innings) is scheduled to make his third start for the Timber Rattlers. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 5, Kannapolis 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Leave Kannapolis With Series Tying 5-2 Victory In addition to starting RHP Max Lazar’s (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) return to full season affiliate ball, this game featured the Mudcat debut of RHPs Cameron Wagoner, Arielbi Gonzalez and Yerlin Rodriguez. Wagoner (3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks), selected in the 11th round of the 2022 draft, earned the victory with three shutout innings including an impressive seven strikeouts. The victory earned Carolina a 3-3 series split for the week. Kannpolis took a similar approach to the game, with each of their first three pitchers making Low-A debuts, the last of which getting tagged for Carolina’s first three runs in the 4th and 5th innings, courtesy of a 2B Jadher Areinamo (1-for-3, HBP, RBI) run-scoring single and a clutch two-out, 2-RBI double from 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs). C Alex Hall (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) extended the lead to a comfortable 5-0 with a two-run shot in the top of the 6th inning. After giving up a two-run homer to tighten the game at 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Gonzalez (3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) buckled down to retire the final five batters he faced. It was a mild surprise when Rodriguez got the promotion to Low-A earlier ball in the week, but a look at his game log tells you he’s been effective since a move to the bullpen. His shutout 9th inning earned him a save and keeps him scoreless in 6 2/3 innings (five games) since the shift to full-time relief work. Three Quick Strikes: 3B Branlyn Jaraba (2-for-3, double, HBP, RBI) is justifying his own early-August promotion to the Mudcats, lifting his Carolina average to .306 with an .870 OPS. Yes, a combined 29 strikeouts (14 for Cannon Baller hitters, 15 for Mudcat batters) is now a normal part of baseball at all levels. Being out-hit nine to seven wasn’t a problem for the Mudcats, as Carolina drew more walks (six vs. two) and hit-by-pitches (two vs. zero), whilst going 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position (vs. 1-for-6 for Kannapolis). Unfortunately, we’ve no explanation for the five-game absence of 2022 first round selection SS Eric Brown Jr. Let’s hope it’s short-term in nature and we see him return to action on Tuesday. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (64-56) returns home to face Royals’ Low-A affiliate Columbia (48-71). Expect RHP Fernando Olguin (5.68 ERA) to start Game One, trying to put a rough last appearance behind him. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 7. Strong starting pitching was a theme throughout all five Sunday contests, although only the Timber Rattlers and Mudcats were victorious. Nashville remains in first place despite dropping its finale. Biloxi suffered late game collapses in a doubleheader sweep. 8. The Wisconsin play-by-play suggested a skirmish, but I never imagined it occurred on such a benign pitch. Maybe Armenteros wants an early offseason to get back to whatever’s left of his $3 million signing bonus.

  10. Tampa AAA affiliate Durham has gotten the good version of LHP Angel Perdomo since claiming him on July 19th: 0.54 ERA with 27 Ks and 4 BBs in 16 2/3 IP. They even slipped him through waivers on August 4th despite me hoping we’d try a little claim-DFA-outright scheme. Well done to Angel.
  11. INF/OF Mark Mathias is enjoying big league success (9-for-18, 2 HR, 8 RBIs):
  12. Thank you for starting this thread. I guess RHP Alexis Ramirez's (part of C Alex Jackson - INF Hayden Cantrelle trade) retirement can be posted here.
  13. I'm very curious how the Rule 5 Draft will go this year. In theory, the extra MLB roster spot (26 vs. 25), universal DH (less in-game substitution in the NL) and 3-batter rule (fewer LOOGYs) will make it easier to stash an extra player, thus countering the 30-year trend of needing more MLB roster space for relief pitchers. However, the cap on total pitchers on the MLB roster (i.e. 13 maximum) actually means it's easier to stash young hitters, not necessarily young pitchers. Just look at how many plate appearances that Jonathan Davis has gotten over the past month.
  14. Carolina came closest to victory, but stranded ten men in a tough loss. Nashville battled back to tie the game twice, but couldn’t snatch a win. Wisconsin mustered just four hits in a 6-1 defeat. The pitching star on this difficult day was Carolina’s Edwin Jimenez, who yielded just one earned run over six innings, while Patrick Dorrian homered for the third straight game in a close Nashville loss. Thursday’s game balls go to the aforementioned Jimenez and Dorrian, as well as Eduardo Garcia, Jadher Areinamo and Eduarqui Fernandez. Transactions: LHP Justin King activated from High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list LHP Clayton Andrews activated off AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list and assigned to AA Biloxi (though really moving from rehab work at ACL Brewers Gold) Game Action Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 7, Nashville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Lose Battle in Durham Starting LHP Ethan Small (1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) wasn’t able to make it through the second inning, while Durham starter Yonny Chirinos completed his three scheduled innings (coming back from injury), quickly turning this into an entertaining bullpen game. The Sounds’ offense battled back three times, grabbing its first lead 2-1 lead in the second inning without hitting the ball out of the infield. Is that luck? No, it’s actually speed and contact: 2B Patrick Dorrian (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) walked, C Mario Feliciano (1-for-4) and OF Esteury Ruiz (1-for-4, RBI) had infield singles, OF Sal Frelick (1-for-4, double) mixed in a sacrifice bunt and 3B Brice Turang (1-for-3, walk, RBI) added an RBI groundout. However, after RHP Matt Hardy bailed out Small by getting the final out with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning, he himself ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning, giving up three runs on three hits (including a 2-run jack which Feliciano and 1B Jon Singleton both knew was outta here on contact) and a walk for a 4-2 deficit. Nashville’s second comeback was again immediate, with red-hod Dorrian smacking his eighth homer of the year in the top of the 4th inning, a two-run shot to right field which plated DH/OF Garrett Mitchell (2-for-3, walk, 2 SBs) to knot the affair 4-4. At 5-5 in the bottom of the 8th inning, things unfortunately fell apart when recently-outrighted RHP JC Mejia entered and gave up a leadoff double, followed by two hit batsmen and Sounds’ Manager Rick Sweet getting ejected. Following with two walks to load the bases with Nashville down 7-5, RHP Nash Walters was summoned for his first-ever AAA action, getting a ground out to end the rough inning. Three Quick Strikes and a Foul Ball: The third Sounds comeback came in the top of the 6th inning, when Mitchell singled, stole second and scored on an OF Joey Wiemer (1-for-4, RBI, SB) RBI single to even the game 5-5. Wiemer then stole second base, but got a little greedy and was caught stealing third. Mitchell has 16 stolen bases (caught once) this year, while Wiemer has 29 (caught thrice). Recently-optioned RHP Jake Cousins gave up one run in two innings, while RHPs Zack Brown and Hobie Harris completed one scoreless inning each to keep the game knotted at 5-5. Durham retired the final seven Sounds in order, so the last real chance for Nashville came in the 7th inning when Frelick doubled and Turang walked, but Singleton (just a .617 OPS in August after a terrific 1.071 July) wasn’t able to come through. As long at Small keeps allowing counts to run full, I’m going to keep comparing him to former Brewer Yovani Gallardo. Five of the nine batters he faced in this game went to full counts, contributing to three 2nd inning walks and an early exit after he’d thrown 36 pitches in that particular frame. Friday’s outlook: RHP Dylan File (4.42 ERA) is scheduled to start in Durham tonight, as Nashville aims to grab a 3-1 series lead, with second place Columbus just 2.5 games back of the Sounds. Unfortunately, the dam which Mort had so firmly held eventually broke in the top of the 8th inning as he conceded three singles and was replaced by RHP Miguel Guerrero (1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 2 Ks), who gave up another two singles for a 5-0 deficit. Credit goes to the Lugnuts, who’ve struggled most of the year (48-69 record) but really put the Timber Rattlers in their place behind starting pitcher Joey Estes’ six shutout innings of one-hit ball. Three Quick Strikes: SS Eduardo Garcia (3-for-4, double, RBI) produced three of Wisconsin’s four hits, fittingly knocking in their only run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning. DH/C Jeferson Quero was a welcome sight, returning to action after a 9-day absence, though he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Hopefully OF Jackson Chourio is not far behind him in coming back after recent arm soreness. Even major league rehabber 3B/RF Jace Peterson caught the offensive malaise, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout. He played three innings at third base and three innings in right field before exiting. Friday’s outlook: RHP Israel Puello (5.84 ERA in Low-A/High-A) is scheduled to take the mound in Game Four in Appleton tonight, with the Timber Rattlers needing a win to knot the series 2-2. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis 4, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Sibrian Stays Hot, but Mudcats Fall 4-3 Carolina will rue this loss, as three key plays which went Kannapolis’ way essentially decided the game. After five innings of stellar work from competing starters 20-year RHP Edwin Jimenez (6 IP, 4 R (1 ER), 6 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks) and 25-year old Dylan Burns, Carolina’s offense finally broke through in the top of the 6th inning when the Cannon Ballers’ bullpen walked three consecutive Mudcats to open the inning. OF Eduarqui Fernandez (2-for-4, RBI) and 2B Jadher Areinamo (2-for-3, walk, RBI) followed with RBI singles to score OF Hedbert Perez and DH/OF Jace Avina (2-for-4, double, walk) to take a 2-1 lead, but Kannapolis escaped further damage by throwing out a Mudcat at home (the first key play) and inducing an inning-ending ground ball double play. When the Cannon Ballers finally put pressure on Jimenez with two singles in the bottom of the 6th inning, Edwin induced a grounder to third base, but 3B Branlyn Jaraba booted it (the second key play) to tie the game 2-2 and extend the inning, which was followed by a two-run double for a 4-2 Kannapolis advantage. After stranding two runners in the 7th inning, the Mudcats put two men on in the 8th inning and C Jose Sibrian (1-for-4, double, RBI) came through with an RBI double to left field (extending his hitting streak to nine games), but only one run would score as Jaraba was thrown out at home (the third key play) with Carolina trailing 4-3. Three Quick Strikes: OF Hendry Mendez (2-for-4, double, walk) led off the 9th inning with a double, reached third base on a ground out, but was stranded there as the final two Mudcats struck out. RHP Alexander Vallecillo (2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) continued Jimenez’s excellent work by pitching two scoreless innings in relief. 1B Jesus Chirinos will want to forget this game quickly after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts while leaving five men on base in his appearances, including a game-ending strike out on top of being thrown out at home in the 6th inning. Friday’s outlook: Expect 22-year old RHP Jeferson Figueroa (6.68 ERA) to get the start and once again try for his first organizational win and even this week’s series in Kannapolis 2-2. Figueroa’s been getting the strikeouts (79 Ks in 64 2/3 innings this year), but it hasn’t translated to success quite yet. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 16. It's great that Tietz has turned the corner (2.61 July ERA, 1.42 August ERA). At this point, I believe he's trying to earn an opening day spot on the High-A Wisconsin roster for next season, which would bring the Watertown man "home".

  18. Carolina starting RHP Yujanyer Herrera just turned 19 years old, but wasn’t intimidated in his debut in full season ball as he led the Mudcats to a victory. Though a bit older at 30, Nashville starting RHP Tyler Herb is also turning heads as he continued his terrific recent form with a 7-inning shutout. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Herb, Herrera, Brice Turang, Esteury Ruiz and Hedbert Perez. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Nashville 7, Jacksonville 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Jacksonville 6, Nashville 3 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Split Doubleheader in Jacksonville Nashville opened the first game with five consecutive hits to grab a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, before RHP Tyler Herb (7 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks) then dominated in a complete 7-inning game shutout. OF Sal Frelick (2-for-4, double), OF Esteury Ruiz (2-for-4), 3B Brice Turang (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) and RF Garrett Mitchell (2-for-4) each collected two hits in the game, including Turang’s 11th homer of the season via a solo shot in the 2nd inning. That victory clinched a series win for the Sounds before the teams re-convened to play another 7-inning series finale. Nashville opted for a bullpen game in the second game, with starting RHP Lucas Erceg (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) extending his scoreless streak to nine innings with two more shutout frames here. However, rehabbing RHP Jake Cousins and normally-reliable RHP Matt Hardy didn’t fare as well, giving up three runs on four hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while recording just five outs as the Sounds fell behind 3-0 by the 4th inning. Nashville battled back via RBI hits from OF Esteury Ruiz (1-for-3, double, sacrifice, RBI) and SS Brice Turang (2-for-3, walk, RBI), then 3B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-3, triple, double) doubling and scoring on a sacrifice fly to tie it 3-3 in the top of the 6th inning. Unfortunately, RHP JC Mejia had his first bad outing of August as he gave up three hits in the bottom half of the inning, the last a 3-run blast to restore Jacksonville’s 3-run advantage. The Sunday split means that Nashville won this week’s series 4-2. Three Quick Strikes: SS Pablo Reyes exited the opening game in the bottom of the 4th inning and didn’t play in the latter contest, so this is something to monitor. With the team leading 5-0 by that point and committed to giving Turang some playing time at 3rd base, Weston Wilson stepped in to man shortstop for the first time in 2022. RHP Hobie Harris (season ERA 1.94) came into Game Two to strike out his only batter in the bottom of the 4th inning, stranding Jumbo Shrimp runners at second and third to prevent that game from getting out of hand. 1B Jon Singleton is a unique baseball player, walking four more times across the two games and knocking in two runs. His batting average is just .206, but he’s walked 95(!) times to give him a terrific .375 on-base percentage. He also has 19 home runs and 60 RBIs through 345 at-bats this year. Next week’s outlook: It’s a battle of first place titans, as Nashville (70-46) travels to take on 66-51 Durham (Rays’ AAA affiliate). Expect rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser to start the opening game, with RHP Marcus Walden (only one run allowed in last 11 innings) getting the lion’s share of the work. As such, there was little to play for, but at least RHP Carlos Luna (4 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) put in an effective shift. For the record, Montgomery scored 12 runs on 17 hits and also struck out 14 Shuckers in the one-sided contest. The teams got down to serious business in the follow-up game, which was originally planned as a 9-inning game but ended up finishing early. Presumably the teams agreed to shorten it during one of the day’s rain delays. Although the offense grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning, sparked by perhaps unexpected contributions from 2B Yeison Pena (1-for-3) and C Jason Lopez (2-for-3), starting RHP TJ Shook (3 2/3 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 0 Ks) couldn’t quite escape a two-on, nobody out 4th inning jam as he conceded a 3-run homer with his final pitch. The Shuckers didn’t give up, however, as 1B Zavier Warren (1-for-2, walk) singled and SS Cam Devanney (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs) smacked his 17th home run of the year (his first since July 30) to knot the contest at 4-4 in the top of the 6th inning. RHP Nash Walters struck out consecutive batters in the bottom of the 7th inning before conceding a pinch-hit double and walk-off single to end it. Biloxi’s two Sunday losses gave Montgomery a 4-2 series win. Three Quick Strikes (all stemming from Game Two): OF Corey Ray was in an 0-for-21 skid, but snapped it with an RBI single to tie the game 1-1 in the 3rd inning. However, he followed that up with a back-breaking ground ball double play with two-on, nobody out in the top of the 5th inning and a strikeout in the final frame. OF Terrence Doston collected two hits in the game, the latter a bunt single to lead off the top of the 7th inning. In a game of “howevers”, he was then caught stealing. RHPs Zach Vennaro and Harold Chirino (season ERA 3.45) were effective in middle relief, covering 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (56-56) returns home to face Reds’ AA affiliate Chattanooga (48-66). LHP Brandon Knarr (3.05 season ERA in High-A/AA) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Lookouts. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 7, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Kernels Homers Hurt Wisconsin Taking on a solid Cedar Rapids (68-46) squad is difficult, but doing it without OF Jackson Chourio and C Jeferson Quero (both resting for a few days after reported soreness) makes for very little margin for error. To their credit, Wisconsin battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the 1st inning, with 6th inning hits from 2B Antonio Pinero (1-for-3, double), OF Reidy Mercado (1-for-3, SB) and 3B Ben Metzinger (1-for-4, RBI, SB) enabling the Timber Rattlers to tie the game 2-2. Starting RHP Justin Jarvis (5 1/3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks) faced a lot of traffic in ultimately throwing 100 pitches, but did well to limit the Kernels to only two runs before exiting with one-on and one-out in the bottom of the 6th inning. However, RHP Joey Matulovich wasn’t able to provide much relief on this day, as he conceded two homers, a triple and two walks in that same 6th inning before exiting in favor of RHP Taylor Floyd with the Timber Rattlers down 7-2. The loss dropped Wisconsin to a 1-5 series defeat for the week. Three Quick Strikes: C Darrien Miller grabbed a run back with a solo homer in the top of the 8th inning, his 10th of the year. Floyd (2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) was again solid in relief, turning around what had been a challenging season in the initial months. He’s only conceded one run in his last seven appearances (15 1/3 innings). Striking out 15 times in 33 at-bats won’t get the job done on most days. Only Pinero and Mercado managed to avoid a K on Sunday, but each also batted one fewer time than their teammates. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (59-54) will face 46-68 Lansing (Athletics’ High-A affiliate) at home this week. Expect RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (season ERA 3.22 in Low-A/High-A) to start the opener, building on 9 Ks in a tough luck loss in his last outing. Carolina Pre-Game Notes Final: Carolina 6, Fayetteville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Hit Four Homers in Sweep Clinching Victory RHP Yujanyer Herrera (5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 3 Ks) had a terrific Low-A debut, overcoming a 1st inning run to keep Fayetteville scoreless over his remaining innings. Having just turned 19 years old on Wednesday, I’m sure that he only needs one or two more games like this to start climbing prospect lists. OF Hedbert Perez (2-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) smacked his 15th home run of the year to tie the game 1-1 in the 2nd inning before 3B Jadher Areinamo (1-for-3) singled and scored on a SS Robert Moore (2-for-4, RBI, SB) single in the 3rd inning to give Carolina its first lead. After a rain delay entering the 6th inning, RHP Miguel Guerrero came in to strike out the side in that frame before conceding a run on two hits in the 7th inning. Thankfully, the Mudcats responded to the challenge immediately, with DH/INF Alberis Ferrer (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) blasting a 2-run shot in the 7th inning to re-capture the lead 4-2, then 2B Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-4, HR, RBI) and 1B Jesus Chirinos (1-for-4, HR, RBI) each adding solo shots in the 8th inning. The victory completed a 6-0 series sweep for Carolina on the week. Three Quick Strikes: It was truly a day for exciting, young pitching prospects as fellow 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) earned his first Low-A save with two shutout innings. Contributor @CheeseheadInQC highlighted in the forum that Herrera was only the second Brewer minor league pitcher in the last 16 years to make a Low-A debut in his “age 18 season”. I believe that the other was RHP Brailin Rodriguez in 2021, who’s unfortunately been injured throughout 2022. RHP Miguel Segura had been noted as the incoming 6th inning reliever, but didn’t actually face any batters. This was either due to the rain delay, the manager changing his mind or perhaps Segura didn’t feel quite right during his warm up. We’ll have to monitor this, as he’s not pitched since July 29. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (61-53) heads to Kannapolis (50-64) to battle the White Sox’s Low-A affiliate. 20. Carolina stormed back from an early deficit, ultimately plating ten runs in a satisfying victory. Wisconsin lost 1-0 despite limiting the opposition to a single hit. Biloxi’s offense was dormant in their loss, while Nashville was rained out. Hendry Mendez led the Mudcats’ heroics, giving them leads in the 4th and 7th innings, the latter on a monster bomb into the right field lights (see video below). Young Stiven Cruz was also outstanding in his debut for the Timber Rattlers, but the offense was unable to support him. Thursday’s Game Balls go the aforementioned Cruz and Mendez, as well as Eric Brown Jr., Jace Avina and Taylor Floyd. Transactions: C Jakson Reetz designated for assignment RHP J.C. Friday’s outlook: It’s a Friday doubleheader (and an off day on Saturday). Expect RHP Dylan File (4.40 season ERA) and LHP Ethan Small (3.38 season ERA) to start the Friday contests, with Nashville hoping for a sweep of the day to claim a 3-1 series lead. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 4, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Shuckers Shutout By Biscuits Starting RHP Victor Castaneda (5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 2 WP, 9 Ks) had a rare off game, with an infield single in the 1st inning escalating into four consecutive hits to give the Biscuits an early 2-0 advantage. In the 4th inning, two walks and two strikeouts were followed by a clutch RBI double from the opposition, then a run-scoring wild pitch to complete the scoring. Castaneda still managed to strike out nine Biscuits on his 106-pitch day. Montgomery retired the final nine Shuckers in order in their fine 12-strikeout, shutout performance. Three Quick Strikes: RHPs Nash Walters (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) and Robbie Hitt (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were solid in three scoreless, hitless relief innings, but the Shuckers offense was unmoved by their efforts. DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-4) and OF Terence Doston (1-for-3) produced Biloxi’s only hits, all singles. Offensive maestro SS Andruw Monasterio (.956 OPS in AA ball this year) was absent for a second straight game, although I want to assume this is part of the same two-day rest strategy which saw 1B Thomas Dillard miss games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday’s outlook: Impressive LHP Robert Gasser (season ERA 3.90 in High-A/AA) is ready to make his third start for the Shuckers, who need a victory to knot the series at 2-2. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 1, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Cedar Rapids Solo Homer Stops Wisconsin One could not possibly ask for a better High-A debut for 20-year-old RHP Stiven Cruz (6 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks), who conceded just one hit in six innings of work against a terrific Cedar Rapids squad which ran its season record to 66-45. The fatal blow (a solo homer to 2B Mikey Perez, his first in High-A after a promotion earlier this month) came on an 0-1 pitch to start off the bottom of the 5th inning. Cruz threw just 76 pitches (50 strikes) in his six excellent innings of work. Wisconsin outhit the Kernels three to one, as both offenses struggled on a day for the pitchers. On the bright side, the Timber Rattlers struck out only four times in their 32 plate appearances. The balls just weren’t landing for hits on this day. The Timber Rattlers managed to get 1B Ernesto Martinez (1-for-2, walk, SB) to third base on a single, stolen base and error with two outs in the 6th inning, but couldn’t bring him home. Their last baserunner came via a C Darrien Miller (0-for-3, walk) four-pitch walk with two outs in the 8th inning, but again nothing could come of it. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Taylor Floyd (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks) is finally showing the 2021 form which put him on most of our prospect lists, striking out five of the seven batters he faced in a scoreless relief effort. Tangible opportunities were few and far between, with the Timber Rattlers going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position (five men left on base) and Cedar Rapids going 0-for-1 in that department (three men left on base). Thursday’s game saw the return of DH/1B/C Wes Clarke (0-for-3, walk), who’d been absent since July 30th. However, Martinez departed the game in the bottom of the 7th inning, thus giving us someone else’s health status to unfortunately worry about. Friday’s outlook: RHP Brady Schanuel (season ERA 3.76) is pegged to make his second-ever minor league start in what is presumably a bullpen game for a Wisconsin club which desperately needs a victory, down 3-0 in the series. Carolina Pre-Game Notes (not available via standard link) Final: Carolina 10, Fayetteville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mendez and Brown Homer in 10-5 Victory This game looked like it may be lost in the top of the 1st inning, as Fayetteville jumped out to a 4-0 lead against starting RHP Edwin Jimenez (5 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks), with five players reaching base in succession: single, walk, hit-by-pitch, 2-run single, double, sacrifice fly. To their credit, the Mudcats punched right back in an entertaining affair, producing two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning, including RBI singles from Outfielders Jace Avina (2-for-4, double, RBI) and Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-3, walk, RBI). In the third inning, the Brewers’ 2022 first and second round draft picks teamed up to knot the game 4-4 via a SS Robert Moore walk and then DH/SS Eric Brown Jr.’s second homer since joining Carolina. 18-year-old OF Hendry Mendez (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs) then gave the Mudcats their first lead of the game at 5-4 via an RBI infield single in the bottom of the 4th inning and did it again at 6-5 with a towering first-pitch solo homer in the bottom of the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the floodgates finally opened, as Carolina brought in four runs on four singles (1B Jesus Chirinos, 2B Zack Raabe, 3B Branlyn Jaraba, Mendez) and a walk to put the game out of reach at 10-5. Three Quick Strikes: 19-year-old RHP Jeison Pena (2 IP, 0 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) and 24-year-old LHP Leoni De La Cruz (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) were terrific in clamping down on the hot Woodpecker offense, striking out seven and conceding just one hit in four innings of scoreless relief work. Manager Victor Estevez appears to maximizing Mendez’s chance to return to the high level of play he’d demonstrated before a wall collision earlier this month and it certainly paid dividends with his clutch performance today. Is there a promotion to High-A Wisconsin looming in Mendez’s near future? The 23-year-old Raabe (1-for-4, RBI, no strikeouts) seems to be levelling off again. He’d started the season well (.736 OPS in 181 plate appearances), had a miserable middle stretch (.430 OPS in 79 plate appearances) and is now on a more respectable recent trend (.685 OPS over last 48 plate appearances). Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Vallecillo (season ERA 4.60 in ACL/Low-A) is scheduled to make his third start in Low-A ball, as Carolina hopes to clinch the series with a fourth consecutive win. ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Cancelled (Rain): ACL Brewers Blue vs. ACL Athletics (I assume this game will not be made up) This game had commenced, with LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (10th round draft pick) getting the start, but now the box score seems wholly unavailable online after it was apparently cancelled due to rain. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Brewers1 14, DSL Texas Red 8 Box Score / Game Log Brewers-1 didn’t let a 3-0 deficit in the 1st inning get them down, scoring 14 unanswered runs to dominate the game before generously allowing five runs to Texas in the final frame. The win improves Brewers-1’s record to 21-34. 17-year-old switch-hitting OF Luis Lara (4-for-4, HR, HBP, 3 RBIs, SB) was the star of the game, homering, scoring five runs, driving in three runs and reaching base in all five plate appearances. OF/INF Luis Watter (2-for-3, BB, HBP) reached base four times in a notable effort, while consistent producer C Edgardo Ordonez (1-for-4, double, 2 RBIs, - season OPS of .810) knocked in two runs with a double. The teams combined for 23 hits (13 for our young men) along with 13 errors (six for Brewers-1). Neither Lara, Ordonez nor Watter committed any of our errors, nor did OF Duncan Garcia (1-for-4, 2 RBIs) who instead threw out a runner at home. On the mound, let’s give credit to 17-year-old LHP Justin Caceres (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks) for his three innings of scoreless work. In the worrisome category, 1B Arnys Rodriguez was replaced after just two innings, having singled and scored before exiting. Hopefully it’s only a short-term challenge. Suspended after 5 ½ innings (Rain): DSL Brewers2 2, DSL Phillies White 1 (to be continued) Box Score / Game Log Starting 20-year-old RHP Jerel Vizcaino (3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) allowed more traffic than usual, but still battled and only yielded one run which was unearned. Fellow long-man 19-year-old RHP Dencer Geraldo (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 0 K) then followed up with two scoreless innings. 3B Johan Barrios and OF Irving Igualas teamed up with two singles in the 4th inning to tie the game 1-1, then OF Reminton Batista doubled and scored on an Igualas RBI ground-out to give Brewers-2 its first lead in the top of the 6th inning, right before rains postponed the contest. 21. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cedar Rapids 1, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Cedar Rapids Solo Homer Stops Wisconsin One could not possibly ask for a better High-A debut for 20-year-old RHP Stiven Cruz (6 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks), who conceded just one hit in six innings of work against a terrific Cedar Rapids squad which ran its season record to 66-45. 22. The Arizona Blue and Gold squads won two of three games on the day, but our youngsters in the Dominican came up empty. The Brewers received notable contributions from three recent draft picks. The pitching of Yujanyer Herrera led the day. At the plate, Ernesto Martinez (grand slam), Jhonnys Cabrera, and Luke Adams (first as a Brewer) each homered, Gregory Barrios collected four hits across two games, and Quinton Low reached base five times in his one game. Transactions: N/A ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Brewers Blue 16, ACL Guardians 3 Box Score / Game Log This blowout win boosts ACL Brewers Blue’s record to 18-30. After drawing a 1st inning walk, rehabbing DH/1B, Ernesto Martinez (1-for-2, HR, 2 walks, 4 RBIs) went big in the 2nd inning, smacking a 2-out grand slam to extend Blue’s lead to 6-0 and essentially put the game away. Blue led by as much as 12-0 and 14-1, as the club also received a dominant start from 18-year-old RHP Yujanyer Herrera (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks). The 14-hit, 10-walk offensive feast helped many prospects boost their numbers, with 1B/RHP Quinton Low (2-for-3, double, 2 walks, HBP) reaching base five times, C Tayden Hall (2-for-5, double, walk, 2 RBIs) three times and returned-from-injury 3B Ney Serrano (1-for-4, 2 walks) three times as well. Lightly-used DH/C Jhonnys Cabrera further contributed to his Jon Singleton-esque statline by hitting a 2-run homer in the 7th inning. He now has a slash line of .205 AVG / .407 OBP / .364 in 59 plate appearances. SS Jheremy Vargas exited in the 3rd inning of the game, so this will be something to monitor going forward. Hall also allowed three passed balls, although at least there were no stolen bases against him. Game One Final: ACL Cubs 6, ACL Brewers Gold 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Cubs 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The doubleheader split leaves ACL Brewers Gold with a 27-21 record. In the opener, recent 6th round draft pick RHP Tyler Woessner (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks) was impressive in his start, striking out five Cubs in two scoreless innings. Is a call-up to Low-A Carolina in his near future? Unfortunately, 2021 draft pick 18-year-old 6’6” LHP Caden Vire continues to show rust after a recent long lay-off, retiring only one of six batters while giving up five runs, three walks, two hits, and issuing two wild pitches. We may need to take the long view with Mr. Vire and trust the organization’s development plan. 2021 super international signing 18-year-old DH/SS Gregory Barrios (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) knocked in both of Gold’s runs, while 18-year-old 2022 draftee (3rd round) SS Dylan O’Rae (1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 SBs) reached base three times and 19-year old 2B Miguel Briceno (1-for-3, double – his OPS in ACL ball is .881) continues to produce. 19-year-old LHP Fraudy Maldonado (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and 23-year-old LHP Jakob Brustoski (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 1 K) also merit positive notes for combining on three shutout innings. The Gold men grabbed some revenge in the day's second game, taking a 3-1 lead with three runs in the 4th inning, then adding two helpful insurance runs in the final frame. 2022 draftee (12th round) 18-year-old 1B/3B Luke Adams (2-for-3, HR, walk, RBI, SB) was a crucial cog in the offense, smacking his first home run in the organization to lead off the 4th inning. SS Barrios (2-for-4, 2 SBs) and OF Eduarh Colina (2-for-3) also collected two hits each. The pitching staff struck out 12 Cubs in seven innings and issued seven walks. Although starting 19-year-old, RHP Henrison Mota struck out five Cubs (versus four walks) in 2 2/3 innings, 19-year-old RHP Delson Guzman (2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) probably had the more interesting line by retiring six of the eight batters he faced to earn the save. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE DSL Texas Blue 7, DSL Brewers1 4 Box Score / Game Log Monday’s loss drops DSL Brewers-1’s record to 19-32. This game will serve as a rare blip for 18-year-old LHP Osbriel Mogollon (5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 1 BB, Ks), who’s been lights out for most of the year but took the loss here. On the bright side, he only issued one walk, had no wild pitches, didn’t balk or hit a batter, and didn’t allow long balls. The box score tells the story of the offensive struggles of the club, with only two OPSs above .700: C Edgardo Ordonez (1-for-3 – season OPS of .817) and OF Luis Lara (1-for-3, double, walk–season OPS of .720). DH/INF Jose Pena (3-for-4, double, 2 RBIs – season OPS of .453) collected three hits, and 3B/OF Luis Watter (2-for-4 – season OPS of .611) grabbed another two hits. Down 5-2 and 5-3, the team had three runners thrown out on the bases in the 6th and 7th innings to hurt their cause. DSL Phillies Red 2, DSL Brewers2 1 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The close defeat leaves DSL Brewers-2 at 24-27 this year. The club managed to out-hit the Phillies 6-3 but couldn’t collect key hits while missing their primary offensive weapon (1B/OF Yeison Perez), going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position (though the Phillies were also 0-for-6 with RISP). The team fell behind 1-0 in the 2nd inning without giving up a hit (walk, wild pitch, stolen base, partially successful double steal), but grabbed a tie in the 3rd inning when 2B Demetrio Nadal (1-for-2, triple, HBP) tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Phillies responded in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a triple and scored on an error to produce what proved to be the winning run. All in all, the pitching staff of 18-year-old RHP Daurys Mora, 17-year-old LHP Jose Meneses, and 20-year-old RHP Waldin Rodriguez was solid in limiting the opposition to just three hits in six innings of work, although the six walks, one hit-by-pitch and one wild pitch also merit mention. They combined to strike out five batters. The box score OPSs look slightly better here. However, it’s still relatively unsightly on the whole: C Eric Martinez (1-for-3 – season OPS of .855), SS Juan Baez (1-for-2, walk, SB – season OPS of .727), 3B Johan Barrios (1-for-3 – season OPS of .720) and the aforementioned Nadal at .710. However, it’s still relatively unsightly on the whole: C Eric Martinez (1-for-3 – season OPS of .855), SS Juan Baez (1-for-2, walk, SB – season OPS of .727), 3B Johan Barrios (1-for-3 – season OPS of .720) and the aforementioned Nadal at .710. 24. Great write-up. Thanks for this. I hope we’re able to agree mutual re-ups with Herb, Oteto and Erceg, so they can continue their progression with an organization that seems to understand and believe in them. I assume Zack Brown is at the stage in his career where he could sign a new minor league contract with spring training invite with a new club every season until his true MLB shot comes.
  25. Wisconsin held on for a hard-won series victory, led by a Chourio masterpiece. Biloxi withstood three consecutive homers in a comeback victory. Nashville and Carolina unfortunately gave up late leads in tough losses. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Jackson Chourio, Marcus Walden, Tristen Lutz, Corey Ray and Nick Bennett, with an honorable mention to Garrett Whitley. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Gwinnett 5, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Sunk by Stripers After Late Letdown Given their first-place standing, terrific performance all year and the advantage of playing at home, the Sounds appeared to have this game in hand up 3-0 entering the 8th inning, only to give up a shocking 5-spot and fall 5-3. The loss ensured a 3-3 series split with Gwinnett for the week. Starting RHP Marcus Walden (5 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks) had his best outing of the year, while SS Brice Turang (2-for-3, walk, RBI) knocked in the game’s opening run on an RBI single in the 3rd inning. The trouble started in RHP Justin Topa’s (1 2/3 IP, 2 ER) second inning of work and continued with RHP Trevor Kelly (1/3 IP, 3 ER – season ERA balloons to 2.00) unable to put out the flames, with all the damage occurring with two outs – five runs on six consecutive singles. Three Quick Strikes: 3B Weston Wilson (1-for-3, double, sac fly, RBI), OF Joey Wiemer (1-for-4, double) and Matt Lipka (1-for-3, double, RBI) each doubled as the team built that 3-0 lead, while leadoff DH/OF Sal Frelick continued his amazing month by reaching base twice (1-for-3, walk – his AAA OPS is now .981). RHP Hobie Harris (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks – season ERA of 1.96) pitched a clean 9th inning to give Nashville a final chance, but the offense was unable to re-start as Gwinnett retired the final 10 Sounds in order. Once-heralded and still-grinding 27-year old RHP Zach Brown (1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) pitched a clean 6th inning to lower his season ERA to 3.08 as he builds his resume for potential future MLB relief work. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (66-44) hits the road to take on 60-51 Jacksonville (Marlins’ AAA affiliate). Rehabbing RHP Adrian Houser is expected to start Game One of the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Rocket City 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Rallies To Claim Series Finale LHP Nick Bennett (6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) faced just 17 batters while sailing through a scoreless initial five innings, before the wheels suddenly jammed as the Trash Pandas went back-to-back-to-back with three consecutive homers to lead off the top of the 6th inning. Of course, to Bennett’s credit, he recovered to finish the inning with no further damage and his team only down 3-2. That initial Shucker lead came courtesy of a 1st inning OF Corey Ray (2-for-3, HR, HBP, RBI) leadoff homer, then OF Garrett Whitley (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs) singling and scoring on a DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-3, double, walk, 3 RBIs) single in the 4th inning. Unlike the aforementioned Sounds’ game, Biloxi’s offense was able to immediately get back into gear, with Ray and SS Andruw Monsterio (1-for-4, RBI) singling and both scoring on a Whitley double to re-claim the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning. After RHP Robbie Hitt allowed a run to tie it up again, 2B Yeison Coca (1-for-3, walk) walked and scored on a groundout to grab a 5-4 advantage, then Lutz doubled in two more runs to provide a 7-4 cushion in the bottom of the 7th inning. By winning both weekend games, Biloxi was able to grab a 3-3 series tie for the week. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Nash Walters (1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) continued his notable 2022 resurgence by getting the final four outs of the game and earn his first save of the year. 3B Cam Devanney is in a bit of a slump (0-for-4 in this game, 6-for-43 in August), although this writer still believes in him after his amazing first four months of 2022. It’s honestly good to see old friend 27-year old 1B/OF Ryan Aguilar (.889 season OPS; 13th homer of the year in this game) playing regularly and playing well for Rocket City. He was an intriguing prospect given the amount of center field time the Brewers’ gave him before his nightmare 2021 campaign which led to his exit. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (54-52) goes on the road to face 53-48 Montgomery (Rays’ AA affiliate). RHP TJ Shook (3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 98 High-A/AA innings) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Biscuits. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, South Bend 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Brewers' Chourio homers on four-hit day Don’t miss the terrific video highlights put together by the Rattlers’ media team: Wisconsin’s offense came through early to give their tired staff much-needed support, as a leadoff C Darrien Miller walk was followed by OF Jackson Chourio annihilating a 3-0 pitch for his 4th homer as a Timber Rattler (and his 16th of the year) for a 2-0 lead. Chourio was something of a one-man wrecking crew, going 4-for-4 in the game with 2 RBIs. Tied 2-2 in the 3rd inning, Miller and Chourio again led the charge, walking and singling with one out, then scoring on RBI singles by C Jeferson Quero (2-for-4, RBI) and SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-4, RBI). A wild pitch added another run for a 5-2 advantage. Facing the Cubs for the second time in six days, RHP Israel Puello (3 1/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 6 BB, 2 Ks) again struggled, walking batters each and every inning, including the last three hitters he faced. Thankfully, RHP Christian Tripp (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) managed to strand two of three inherited runners to limit the damage and exit the frame up 5-3. From there, it wasn’t easy, but RHPs Taylor Floyd (2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and James Meeker (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K) managed to battle through traffic to pitch four shutout innings, giving Meeker his 11th save of the year. South Bend actually has men on 2nd and 3rd base with one out in the top of the 9th inning before Meeker delivered a full-count strikeout and then induced a line out to left field to end the win, giving the Timber Rattlers a hard-earned 4-2 series victory. Three Quick Strikes: After Puello’s rough Tuesday outing (3 2/3 IP, 7 ER), I’d imagine that Manager Joe Ayrault wanted to give him a full week of rest, but that theoretical plan (if it existed) needed to be shelved after the team was forced into a bullpen game on Saturday (given RHP Justin Bullock’s absence). Both teams were generous in their own way in this game, with the Cubs going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while the Timber Rattlers allowed four Cubs’ stolen bases with zero caught stealing. For the second straight game, Miller (0-for-2, 3 BB) walked three times in the leadoff spot, so it’s a safe bet he’ll continue in the role. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (58-49) travels to battle 63-45 Cedar Rapids (Twins’ High-A affiliate) this week. RHP Justin Jarvis (3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 110 2/2 innings) is expected to start the opener. Carolina Pre-Game Notes (not available) Final: Delmarva 3, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Wastes Early Lead in Series Splitting Loss Starting RHP Fernando Olguin (5 IP, 2 R, 10 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) had kept a zero on the board in spite of giving up a hit in each of the first five innings, before his fortune ran out in the bottom of the 6th inning. By contrast, both initial Carolina runs (2nd and 5th inning) were produced without the benefit of a hit, as they were actually outhit 13-5 in the contest. Of course, the Mudcats did walk six times and get hit by a pitch, but they’ll rue their 0-for-7 output with runners in scoring position. That fateful 6th inning went single, triple, single before RHP Miguel Guerrero (2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks) entered in relief. Three Shorebird singles off Guerrero in the 7th inning gave them the only lead they would ever need in claiming a come-from-behind win to knot the series 3-3. Three Quick Strikes: 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K – lowering season ERA to 3.38 in ACL/Low-A) pitched a scoreless 8th inning to give his teammates a chance to tie it up, but unfortunately Delmarva retired the Mudcat hitters in order in the 9th inning. 2B Jadher Areinamo (2-for-4, SB) and DH/SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-3, double, walk) each reached base twice to lead the Mudcat offense, although each were also caught stealing. OF Hendry Mendez exited the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Let’s hope this was a scheduled time-share with OF Jace Avina as part of Mendez’ re-introduction to action after a recent injury. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (55-53) returns home to face 47-60 Fayetteville (Astros’ Low-A affiliate). Expect RHP Jeferson Figueroa to start the series opener, still looking for his first organizational win. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Monday DSL/ACL squads!
