  1. I like Tellez as much as the next person but I'm not all that concerned about what happens to him. He's fine as a poor man's righty-masher but this team badly needs more players without brutal platoon splits and more players who can hit left-handed pitching. It's just too easy to neutralize those players late in a game, particularly if your lineup has several of them.
  2. I think Abreu makes a fair amount of sense provided you can get him for two years. I'd be really concerned about adding a third year that takes him so close to 40 years old.

  4. The biggest problem with extending pitchers is that you never know who the rubber-armed fools are until they’re established rubber-armed fools. Justin Verlander looked completely cooked as a 33-34 year old and look at him now as a 39 year old.
  5. No doubt about it, I think Stearns is the better baseball guy right now. I was merely refuting the notion that Cashman is bad at his job.
  6. Ah, good point. I forgot where Click came through a team's system.
  7. The owner seems to be the biggest problem in this situation but that doesn't mean Click is a great guy, either. I've become incredibly uncomfortable with the culture the Astros have built over the past decade. Sure, they win a lot but yeesh, they seem to churn out creeps on a pretty regular basis. But if Click is a stand-up guy who can't get along with Houston's owner, he's absolutely worth a look.
  8. And that's fair, I should have specified that I'm leery of signing Adames into his 30s while I was absolutely dead-set against my teams signing Baez last offseason. They're not the same player but they share some traits I'm not fond of locking down long-term.
  9. These rumors are slightly more informed than guesses at this point, I believe. The teams probably don't even know what they're going to do on November 11th. Rosenthal and Passan are my two go-to names and the fact that they're reporting opposite things is rather funny. But still, it's interesting to read what the national guys are hearing within their circles, even if the information conflicts.

  11. Jeff Passan of ESPN believes it's more likely the Brewers and Arnold will try to build around Burnes and Woodruff than trade one of their two top-of-the-rotation starters. While this doesn't mean anything is set in stone, Passan usually has pretty good takes and is known to be pretty tightly-knit with various front offices and agents around the league. If this is truly the case, it's hard to see the Brewers build a roster around them for $135m given their current roster commitments and pending commitments. This means the Brewers either need to raise payroll or they need to get creative in trade. They certainly have some nice pieces on the farm to acquire good, young talent but it's hard to see them trade too much of the future in a single offseason. What I expect is more likely is that we see a few surprise non-tenders to free up cash and possibly some moves to free up additional money (Wong being an obvious example). An interesting tidbit from a baseball journalist I generally respect and follow pretty closely.

  13. I'm not worried about Turang getting PAs. First, half the roster will be injured by Opening Day. That's just how baseball works nowadays. Second, Adames and Urias are righties, Wong and Turang are lefties. There are plenty of infield plate appearances to go around in that arrangement.
  14. That Baez contract terrified me for the same reason a long-term Adames contract terrifies me: guys with terrible discipline, a middling strikeout rate, and good contact skills tend to age really badly. When Baez signed that deal, I called him a rich man's Eddie Rosario and given the first year of Baez in Detroit, that turned out to be an overly generous comparison point. I'm not against an Adames extension if done immediately but I'd rather pay more money for fewer years, as I have very little faith in Willy aging well into his 30s.
  15. I remember dreaming on Braggs and chuckled while editing this, as I remember owning so many of the baseball cards I found in a google images search. But I had no idea that he married one of the En Vogue ladies. What a fun tidbit.

  17. It's very possible they can't match teams on a lot of players. Abreu and Bell are the two most likely candidates, IMO. But more payroll also gives more flexibility to acquire an arb 2/3 guy via trade that makes decent ($10-15m) money. More money is a good thing for competition and given that we all know the Brewers will take a step back at some point and run a lower payroll, it bothers me to see them not push harder during the boom time because we all know they'll reap during a bust time in the near- to mid-future.
  18. Welcome to Brewer Fanatic!
  19. $20-25m simply gives them more flexibility to acquire good players, flexibility the Brewers don't have a lot of at a $130m payroll.
  20. I participated in a debate over at Twins Daily. It's a fair amount of work but not really that hard. It's like writing four long forum posts with some research mixed in to form a coherent argument. That's part of the reason we put a word limit on the entries, it keeps the project more fun for those involved.
  21. But he's not an FA for two more seasons. That in itself lops a couple of years off any potential deal. He gets massive guaranteed money, the Brewers get fewer years, and he enters free agency at a reasonable enough age to get another nice contract. For a player of Adames' calibre, that's a pretty fair deal all around.
  22. It might take three guaranteed free agency years to extend Adames but $20m per year of free agency is probably in the right ballpark.
  23. So were the Phillies. If we're going to give up any fighting chance, why even watch the sport at all?
  24. Yeah, Bell and Abreu are probably my top targets.
  25. I hate the idea of deferred money but honestly, if the Brewers are going to extend their current players, I'm not sure there's another option.
