  1. All of that is part of managing. He mixed data analysis with dealing with real human players without any negative stories coming out of the clubhouse. We can always second guess a manager's decisions, but he took that roster and that staff and turned it into the most wins in the NL. The Braves manager had to have done a good job given how much better the Braves were than expected, but I will always think the writers made the wrong call.
  2. That probably accounts for the size of the range, but there is no cluster or pair of cluster pattern in the blob. It's likely that's what keeps hitters off balance. Even if they can quickly identify the pitch, there's a wide difference in final location. The down side is that Peralta dosen't always have the best control. If he could hone his control without tightening his fastball cluster too much, he will be really tough to hit. With AAA somewhere reasonable this year, it may well be worth putting him there for a month or two.
  3. Yep--and it sounds like the Brewers would have needed to beat the Reds' offer to keep him, not just match. It is what it is. He also said the Reds were extremely persistent. So its possible DJ went back and forth a couple of times, where the Brewers matched / upped the offer and the Reds topped it, and finally the Brewers stopped.
  4. I like it. Not worth it for that money. Maybe it's just past tense because he's talking about a year that's over. Christian Yelich could say "in 2017 I was a Marlin and in 2018 I was a Brewer" and it wouldn't raise any eyebrows just because he didn't add "and I still am". That's the way I read it.
  5. He wasn't on the 40-man roster and the Brewers didn't want to release anyone to bring him up.
  6. I hope his actions cost him 10's of millions on his next contract.
  7. What happened to Miley? Uke said he buckled, but I'm not clear what was going on.
  8. How about why didn't Moose bunt?
  9. Maybe they will stop talking about the Brewers' pen usage to complain about Houston bringing in Ozuna down by 1 in the 8th.
  10. How was the timing? It's frustrating if one is several seconds ahead of the other.
  11. This is probably the biggest thing, although I haven't hear all of Arod's best moments. They used to complain about shifting, until everyone started doing it often. There has been a lot of bemoaning pitchers not going deep in games for a while. This is just an extension of that. There's also some complaining that this isn't the same game as in the regular season. That is somewhat true, but the goal is to win by any means within the rules. If they win the world series, I don't care how the did it.
  12. This is the first time the Brewers have taken a 2-1 lead in a 7 game series.
  13. Houston's starting pitching is more of a problem, so Boston is the better matchup. It is really going to put pressure on other teams to get an early lead, otherwise it's game over by the 5th or 6th. And that pressure is going to get into players heads, making the 'initial out-getters' job a little easier. Also yes, good luck to a batter trying to do anything against those relievers in cold weather.
  14. Tanking is a real problem for baseball. Most fans want hope for the season, and if their team is out before opening day, there's not much reason to watch or go to games. The thing is teams are not tanking just to tank. The only path that teams can take if the don't have enough talent to win, and don't have the unlimited money, the only real chance they have is to trade the talent they have for more / better talent in the future. The only way to fix this is to have a reasonable way for a team to quickly get the talent they need to compete at a reasonable price point.
  15. Basic strategy - get an early lead, make the Dodgers panic a bit and pull the starter early for a PH. Then its bullpen vs bullpen and I know which one I'd bet on.
  16. Holt gets the cycle with a home run off a position player. Does that really count?
  17. Keep in mind the bottom tier of the AL is probably the worst it has ever been. Every top tier team probably won a good 5-10 games more than they would in a more normal year. Even so, the Yankees don't look like a playoff team in this game. Sloppy play and just completely destroyed by Boston. The announcers were wondering if they would bring a position player in to pitch.
