  1. Probably, but hard to say. There was no really dominant, head turning performance. Other options are Burns or Kratz.
  2. So barring a complete meltdown, this will mean champagne spraying in three straight road games. Road Warriors!
  3. I don't disagree. The faster we stop comparing and talking about the 1982 team, the better. A world series win will do wonders for putting the 82 team to bed. Every team is different. What sets this team apart is 1) the depth. Every player, every pitcher has a purpose on the roster, and they had to leave good players off it. 2) The intelligent way the players are used. Two days off and they go with a bullpen game. It's crazy, but brilliant if you have the pen arms for it. All September they had the starters go 4 or 5 innings and then threw good fresh pen arms at teams, and the starters didn't wear down like has happened in previous years. The result was the Brewers dominating September and taking the division, plus the first two games of the division series.
  4. Jeremy Jeffress I'm sure. Yeesh, they're really riding JJ hard this season He won't be available tomorrow.
  5. The Brewers have the pieces to have an excellent pen next year, even if Burns, Woodruff and Peralta are in the rotation. The key to a super pen is going to be options. Not as in the options in the pen, but minor league options. The Brewers success in large part this year came from blowing away the notion of a 25 man roster. Using options, 10-day DL stints and a deep roster of AAA arms, they acted like they had a larger roster. When September came and roster games didn't matter, they absolutely dominated, even though starters often went less than 5 innings. The corollary to that is there have to be minor league pitchers on the 40-man roster ready to contribute.
  6. I hope that Keon wouldn't be substituted in on defense for Cain or Yelich, who unless injured, better be playing every inning in the play-offs. That leaves Braun, and I don't wnat his bat out of the line-up either. Big lead, sure, Keon for Braun defensively. Slide Yelich to Left and Keon in RF. I think the idea is to put him in after Braun's last expected at bat. Even with a 1-2 run lead that strategy makes lots of sense.
  7. Magic number is now 3 (NLDS) / 11(WS). Only Brewers wins count.
  8. Bullpen game sounds odd to start a playoff series, but it makes a lot of sense. 1) It plays to the strength of the team. 2) Pitchers are usually most effective the first time through a lineup. 3) Using a PH pretty much every time the pitchers spot come up is like getting a DH in the lineup against one without. 4) The days off keep the bullpen from being burned out in a series. The Brewers have taken the lessons of the 2011 Cards and the 2015 Royals and extended them. Plus added creative use of the lineup to maximize offense, while making extensive use of shifting to minimize the defensive liability of having someone like Shaw at 2nd. It's not traditional, but Septembers results say it's effective.
  9. Yes for Soria, Knebel, and Jeffress. Maybe on Hader. For whatever reason he seems to either need or just really like days in between outings. Just blow them out today and don't worry about it.
  10. The Cubs won 95 games. That isn't even close to a collapse. It can be argued that they collapsed yesterday and today, but they played well through the end of the season. The Brewers caught them because they played out of their mind. The Cubs didn't collapse, but they did wear down. The make up days instead of days off hurt them, but they also suffered from less talent on the 40 man roster. This whole month the Brewers have been using 36 players, and pretty much all of them were making significant contributions. The Brewers were a fresher, more rested team down the stretch, and hungrier too. The Cubs were just running on empty today.
  11. I didn't want to see the Cubs again. Their pitchers do better against the Brewers than anyone else. Now MP will be all Brewers fans.
  12. This. This is not normal, something is up. It doesn’t mean it’s a big deal, I certainly hope it’s not. But this is not just getting a day of rest or gamesmanship. I still haven’t heard anyone confirm he was actually in the bullpen or celebrating with the team. If he was, then I’ll be happy and stop asking questions. But instead I’ve heard only vague indirect responses like “he was in uniform” and “he’s fine.” And when asked why JJ wasn’t up in the 9th, if it’s for rest or nagging injury the answer would not be “undisclosed reasons.” Or at least, this would be the first time I’ve heard anything like this for routine gamesmanship or nagging injuries. IMO we are not being told something. And yes that is ok, I don’t think I’m entitled to know everything. But as a Brewers fan and a HUGE JJ fan, I can’t help but be concerned. The reason for saying undisclosed reasons is probably as simple as not announcing that the reason was preparation for losing Monday. It sends the wrong message.
  13. can't say something was inexcusable until you know the excuse It would have been more inexcusable to burn JJ and Hader and not have either available for a wild card game. By saving JJ, he would have been available for more than one inning today. Fortunately everything worked out perfectly. I find it hard to second guess the results from yesterday.
  14. Defensive WAR’s Yount 1.8 Yelich -0.4 Braun -0.4 Fielder -1.0 Fielder & Braun similar in terms of dWAR. Yount a 10.5 WAR for a season is pretty spectacular. What other giant seasons are we missing? dWAR reflects the position more than how well the position was played. For those who remember 82, do any of you think Yount would have been highly rated defensively without Coopers ridiculous ability to stretch and pick the short hop, or stretch for the high or wide throw? Yet Cooper had a -0.5 dWAR. In 79 he won the gold glove with a -1.1 dWAR. That said, Yount had an incredible season and and such production is more rare for a shortstop than an outfielder, so I'd give the nod to Robin.
  15. This is the first time the Brewers have won a division when the Cards are not in the playoffs.
  16. This time a week ago the Brewers were 2.5 games out. On August 18th the Brewers were 11 games over (and in 3rd place). They finished the season 29 games over.
