  1. Selig has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. While I think he deserves it, much like the case with La Russa, I think it comes too soon after retiring. Players have to wait 5 years so that their careers can be looked at objectively, why not executives? I could see slightly shorter waiting periods for people over 80 like Bud, but it should still be at least 2 years. The only group that would make sense to not have a waiting period for would be owners, since the ones most deserving would likely maintain ownership for life.
  2. Pretty disappointing that the Brewers are getting nothing for the NL HR leader last year, but I'm guessing all other teams are looking at it like he will get $8-10M in arby, and isn't worth it. It's quite possible Carter views himself as worth that much and would rather be a FA than take what was offered. Teams are now valuing OBP more than in the past, so even if Thames and Carter have the same OPS, Thames will likely be more attractive, especially with defense factored in. Based on contract and player worth, the Brewers shouldn't have to throw in money to trade Braun, but trades are not made in a vacuum. If a team was in the luxury tax zone, or couldn't afford the salary, but had really good prospects, the Brewers may choose to eat salary to get a really good haul.
  3. I'm glad they are going to give HFA to the best record team instead of the old way of just alternating it year to year, which was even more of a ridiculous way of doing it than using the AS game. Since the leagues didn't play each other, alternating years was a fair compromise. Honestly it is now likely to go to the team in the least competitive division, unless a WC team gets in. Might be more fair if HFA was determined by the league with the better interleague record.
  4. As good as Guerra was last year, I don't trust him to sustain that level for any length of time. Between age and elbow issues possibly caused by relying on a splitter, he could easily decline or find himself needing TJ by the end of the season. If Sterns gets a top 100, or a near top 100 plus a lottery ticket, he should take it. I hope Guerra keeps pitching well, at least into his arby years so he can make some money, but I just wouldn't bet on it.
  5. I kind of like the idea of Ismael Guillon (LHP Reds) for this reason: Bring him in as a loogy with a guy on first, and see if he can pick the guy off. Especially brutal if there are two outs and he nabs the guy on first.
  6. They can select as many players as they have open 40-man roster spots. They have until three days before the draft to clear 40-man spots. So the maximum number of picks is set before the winter meetings? I was hoping the Brewers could do some deals to open up a spot or two, but it sounds like they will have to do something beforehand.
  7. Hard to justify him not being on a ballot, but those two would have both had to have him 3rd or better for him to win. A case can certainly be made for there being three pitchers better than him. There was no clear cut winner in the AL, and the voting reflects that. He has $28m/year plus Kate Upton, so I'm not shedding any tears for Verlander.
  8. From the linked article. Chastain was the MLB writer who left Verlander off. It makes a lot more sense that he could be left off with his numbers before those two games, but it seems hard to justify voting with two starts still to go.
  9. Perhaps the extended playing time was to evaluate Nieuwenhuis to determine his role going forward. They still have to put together a functional roster for next year, and they probably don't want to start service time on the prospects before they have to, so knowing what KN is suitable for was important. Given how he hit last year, it's hard to say that playing him was an attempt to win more games.
  10. Agree about the AL champ ring, but it is something different. The Uecker 8-ball is a cool one, though not as useful as the alarm clock from this season.
  11. No but it's much more serious if a man hits a woman than if he hits another man. Why? Violence is violence. I'm just going to end it here because we're going toward forum prohibited area but I hate the whole "He hit a woman!? OMG! He is a despicable human being who should be shamed and never see the light of day. Oh, he hit another man. Meh." attitude. With the focus on domestic violence, hitting a woman is likely to get a suspension. Drunken guys (aka idiots) going at it are considered more or less even, and probably equally at fault, so unless there is extenuating circumstances there's nothing to get worked up over.
  12. Very stupid, but not too serious. He wasn't behind the wheel and didn't hit a woman, so there should be no lasting impact on his career. Does MLB have a counseling program for this sort of situation? If the other guy doesn't look worse, Broxton should be cut for not having enough fight in him.
  13. Now instead of lovable losers they can just be the team everyone hates. Yep. Didn't take long for the Red Sox to go from cursed to cursed at.
  14. If the game has changed due to excessive pitching changes, then why not do something about them. The simplest and least radical thing being that a pitcher must face at least two batters unless the end of an inning is reached. Ditching the odious LOOGY won't cause 14-12 games, won't burden teams, and will make the game flow better. The time savings will be small, but the perception will be a faster game. Also shortening the time given to teams checking on when to challenge will not negatively impact the game.
  15. I thought that the numbers show that 2nd and 1 out increases the chance of 1 run scoring, but lowers the chance of any more runs scoring. Thus the Earl Weaver quote 'If you play for one run, that's all you'll get.'
  16. Give up the NL HR leader for nothing!? Payroll isn't a critical issue, and even if it were, 8M for a 40+ hr guy is a tradable contract. Non-tendering Nieuwenhuis makes sense. He's not that good, and not trade bait.
  17. Typically I bring a cooler with drinks, but usually eat in the park. I'm in favor of more food options and shorter lines. My only beef is that they pre-announced this with the teaser of the largest-ever capital project. That got everyone thinking it would be a game changer for the Miller Park, instead of just an improvement on something that has always been there.
  18. It just means our left handed batters aren't very good. Of the lefties, Scooter had the best OPS vs RHP of only .733. Villar from the left side was .786. Giving Broxton a shot full-time instead of platooning with Niewenhuis might improve their splits.
  19. If I were told this, I'd think there was some hope that the rebuild would be shorter rather than longer. When you add in the fact that we now have the highest rated farm system, I'd think that the Brewers brain trust has finally got it's act together and maybe I'll finally see a Brewers WS win in my lifetime.
  20. Texas must have called up a little league infield for tonight, or else Yuni B is in Andrus's uinform.
  21. I was going to mention the AAA stadium in jest. It'll never happen, but that would be awesome and may be the only way we ever get out of the worst AAA situation in the majors. As to the final idea "casino/hotel attached to the stadium," a casino isn't possible unless he wants to give the stadium to a native American tribe, but finding a way to put a hotel up would be great for out-of-the-area fans. I live about 1-1.5 hours away, so it's tough to make it to weekday night games and still make it to work the next day. Just move the fence back a bit on Helfaer Park and we're good to go. The hotel is a great idea, but instead of a casino, it should have an indoor water park to encourage family baseball weekends / mini vacations.
  22. They could easily say the Cardinals are ineligible for a competitive balance pick for the next 5 years or so. The pick would go to the next team in line, so no pick would be lost from the draft.
  23. It probably helps this time of the season to give pitchers a little extra rest. However I don't think it is sustainable throughout the year. A couple of bad/long games in a row would chew through the smaller bullpen. No worries about the bullpen this time of year.
  24. Cubs won the division, but didn't get to celebrate in front of the Brewers. Best win of the season.
  25. Minor note for the full list of Stern's transactions, Walsh was a rule 5 pick, not a waiver claim. Stearns has had good results with a number of minor transactions. Things like that can really make a difference down the road. The key will be the results of the bigger trades, and we won't know that for a few years. Beyond acquiring talent, the key is developing it. A number of prospects seemed to stall this year after a good season last year, and not too many had breakout years. Will this lead to changes for the minor league player development personnel?
