  1. Something noted on jsonline is that there are more NRI's this year due to the World Baseball Classic. With as many as 8 players going to the WBC, a few extra NRI's are needed for camp.
  2. Only those that don't win feel that way. Do you think LeBron thinks any less of his championship? Or do any of the Yankees from their last 90's/early 2000's dynasty think any less of their championships? How about Tom Brady? Winning is winning, and the non-winniners will find any reason to diminish the accomplishments of the winners. 1) Brady is irrelevant because the NFL has the exact opposite payroll structure that we are complaining about. 2) It is not the players opinion that is in question here, but the fans. If there are many teams that are out of it from day 1 and many others with a very slim margin of error even with top notch people running things, it is bad for baseball because it makes it more likely that large chunks of the country will tune out. MLB's answer was to expand the playoffs, which helps some, but they really need to address the income disparity sooner rather than later. The best way to do so would be to share local TV revenue. If a team thinks they are too special to share, then they should not have the right to broadcast any image of the other team.
  3. from the article: I hope they don't go for Lohse, my gut says he won't be anything like the last 2 years, but will be paid like those are the numbers he should put up. Sanchez and Haren look good, but are they available? According to baseball-reference, it looks like Haren has an option and Sanchez is eligible for 3rd year arbitration.
  4. It hurt a lot, Prince made the bullpen better. At the beginning of the season, things didn't looks so good, but the offense without Prince is still good, and Prince has not been unreal this year.
  5. Sweep the Cards in a completely demoralizing way, so they fall apart and miss the playoffs. Other than that, player development and get themselves set up for a good 2013.
  6. Same song we've heard all year - bullpen blows a lead in the 8th and the other teams closer comes in and shuts the door. The song sounds a whole lot better today, though.
  7. 1) The 3 wins in the 82 ALCS. 2) The 2 WS wins (my sister went to game 3, so the Brewers are 5-0 post season when I'm there) 3) Two grand slams in one inning (Cooper and Money) 4) Hank Aaron night. Sadly, since I was young at the time, I can now only remember that there were famous speakers, not who they were or what they said. 5) 1988 in Texas, watching Teddy H pitch a gem after several bad starts, then pitch a fit when he was taken out in the 9th. That game also had two interference calls in the first inning that both went in favor of the Brewers. Cool / not cool memory. Coca-cola red bat night. It was cool getting the bats, but not cool that I insisted on using that end-heavy thing with almost no sweet spot throughout my time in little league, ensuring that I couldn't hit the ball to save my life.
  8. Perhaps they are auditioning Lee Tunnel for a job next year, along with various pen and rotation arms. These guys have all been underperforming by a lot this year and things have been getting worse, not better as the season progresses. I have no problem with this move, he earned it.
  9. Whatever they decide to do, don't hit Furcal. His defense means too much to the Brewers today.
  10. So was that retaliation for Holiday last night, or does a Cardinal get plunked next inning?
  11. Can I be optimistic that DM will sell and get good return on the pieces he sells?
  12. Since this is the kool-aid thread, I'll take a swig and come up with this: 1) Weeks will go on an absolute carry-the-team-on-his-back tear the next few weeks. 2) The Brewers will go 8-1 over the next 9 and close to 4 games out. 3) DM will manage to trade Wolf and Kotaras for a decent pen arm rental and a mid level prospect. 4) Lucroy will be back with a vengeance. 5) August this year will look a whole lot like August last year. 6) Pittsburgh will realize they are Pittsburgh and fall off a cliff. 7) Cincinnati's pitching will start to wither in the heat. 8) St. Louis will realize they don't have Tony managing them and start to fade. All this paves the way for the Brewers to repeat as division champs.
  13. Can we forget about this for another decade? 2002 - a year so bad even the All Star Game was a fail.
  14. Something that's been rolling around in my mind is that Joe would be much better in a situation with a full time color man next to him. That isn't the way the Brewers radio works, so things just aren't working.
  15. There are always players who don't have a large sample size yet, so scouts are your best bet. How often have the Brewers made a guy just called up look really good, and then watch as the next time out he gets shelled, possibly because the next team had a chance to scout him properly. Also the projections are based on consistency, and people are not always consistent. If the scout can pick up a little change that a batter is doing that is opening up or closing a hole in his swing, that could be a key as to why a batter is on a hot streak or a slump and will go into adjusting the attack. Short term trends by definition don't have a large sample size.
  16. Would Hart take a 2-3 year contract? This is his last chance for a big contract, so I have a hunch that he will insist on a 4-5 year contract.
  17. It depends on the trading partner. They may get a better package with an earlier sell. When DM pulled the trigger on the CC trade, he told them the offer would start going down because he'd get fewer starts from him. I could see some tema acting the same way about Greinke.
  18. I guess it depends on which defensive categories we are talking about. There is not likely to be a big difference in catching popups and pouncing on bunts. But there is framing pitches (Lucroy's specialty), throwing out runners, blocking pitches and the ever-popular but nebulous 'handling the pitcher' / 'calling the game'. If the guy is bad at all of them, or so bad at one or more that he looks like a little leaguer, move him from catcher to first base or somewhere else. Otherwise take the offense.
  19. Makes sense given how many innings the bull pen had to eat this week. Lets them buy some (service?) time before making the real move.
  20. He said he'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball, but he didn't follow the unbreakable rule to stay in the game. No plaque for him. Ever.
  21. I'm guessing that Braun would be used to call into question the validity of the tests. If the test showing Clemens juiced is not reliable then there is reasonable doubt that he committed perjury. MLB arbitration does not allow for the test itself to be challenged, but this trial would.
  22. Just a thought, had the last guy reached on the strikeout, that would have gone down in history as the absolute worst way to break up a perfect game.
  23. No, he was fully involved in a scandal that makes the steroid issue look like pine-tar.
  24. Since I brought that one up, I'll clarify. BA didn't sound like the classic golf announcer (soft voice leading up to the putt style) but in his first season he was constantly putting out golf references and idioms. Since I'm not a golfer I found those more irritating than endearing. I think Joe Block's quiet, flat style would play well in golf.
  25. Career numbers: Morgan vs LHP: .201 / .287 / .269 / .557 Gomez vs LHP: .242 / .288 / .395 / .683 Aoki is the other option, but all he would be is a hope at better numbers.
