  1. Totally understand. Those rating lists can be all over the place. Sometimes I think a 4-star kid in basketball can elevate to a 5 simply because Duke or Kansas offers him.
  2. He's actually a 4-star on one of the recruiting sites....Rivals, IIRC? Lucas had offers from Michigan & Alabama, among others. It's hard to believe how much WR & DB talent this new staff has brought on board, to a program that has been known mostly as Tailback & O-line U. And they've secured a couple of nice RB prospects, too. Certainly way too early to say, but McIntosh may have hit a HR to rival what Pat Richter did 30-odd years ago (Alvarez) & about a decade later (Ryan).
  3. Can we add Keston Hiu..........ah, nevermind.😁
  4. I wouldn't totally dismiss using Peguero if he had an 8-10 pitch outing the day before, but otherwise this makes the most sense to me. We're back to pretty much the same starting rotation we hoped for in April. Getting some 7 inning starts mixed in from here on out would solve a lot.
  5. I'll also predict one hitter added, and one pitcher. Who the hitter(s) would be largely depends on performances in the next few weeks. For example, if Tellez comes back with a warm bat he & Canha could cover DH, lessening the need for Toro or Black (or Dorrian/Hiura if they're even in the picture). In that case Miller elbows his way into the conversation. The surge by Monasterio probably works against Black a little, too. If we suddenly see a stabilized rotation turning in more outings of 7 innings--it certainly isn't out of the question--then maybe we stay with 13 pitchers. Odds are probably against that, though.
  6. Martinez has been an enigma to me for awhile now. Really gratifying to see him hit the ground running for the Shuckers.
  7. I noticed that. Another low-minors guy with athleticism, but he flashes power too. If he can figure out/maintain the plate discipline part, look out.
  8. Lauer returning as a BP piece is probably the safest bet. But if they BP Houser at any point, I think Lauer has the best chance of being the guy replacing him. Picking up Teheran was a success but they might've gotten all they can get out of him. I guess Rea gets consideration if they go back to a 6-man at some point. And yes, this rotation can get an awful lot done in the last 46 games.
  9. I'll second that. It's the lifeblood of the organization, vital to their success. I follow the prospects regularly & the minor league "gurus" here make it easy and extremely enjoyable.
  10. Because the rosters can only swell to 28. Before that, teams actually DID add guys who were there to do nothing more than pinch run. In the Yost era Milwaukee added Mel Stocker, a mediocre minor-league hitter who stole a lot of bases. If you mean actually adding a non-baseball player who is unusually fast, Oakland did that in the 70s. Guy was a pretty lousy baserunner, which is more important than flat-out speed.
  11. Thanks. It sounds like something they'd certainly be ultra-careful with.
  12. Looks like it's time for Uribe/Milner/Chafin (yes I include "him") to start getting some 7th inning exercise from time to time. And Peguero as well, still a fan of his stuff. Somehow, someway I'd like to see Houser settle into a Wilson-type role. There'd be room for both. Just doesn't look like it'll happen this year, unless they flip him with Lauer at some point. Where else would you see a starter get through three sparkling innings at 30-31 pitches, and you STILL need the pen to cover 4 (actually 5) innings? Unbelievable stuff. Hope Yelich gets plugged into the charger tomorrow. I know he had a couple knocks, but in the (I think) 4th inning he's on 1st to lead off & never budges, even with 2 out, in a situation I thought screamed "steal". And his last AB looked horrible. Day off comes at a perfect time for him & the pen. Canha hasn't put up impressive numbers since coming over. But I think his ABs look much better than the results. Glad to see him come through. Having said that, he isn't fast. Once he reached in the 10th I thought Wiemer must be living in the 4th stall on the right all afternoon to not be used as a runner. I heard the ball hit to Turang was changed to a hit. I love the kid, but no way. It took an up hop on him but to me that has to be an error.
  13. And for the record, I'm OK with NIL provided it isn't abused or used as another way of cheating. Fat chance of that at some places.
  14. I guess it's an "old school" thing with me. I'm not happy with an Eastern Illinois or UALR or whoever making the commitment to develop & shape a kids' academic, athletic & social skills then having someone vulture in afterward, without having done anything to develop him (and often w/o even knowing the kid existed when he was a HS senior) because they can use another shooting guard or whatever. I think if you choose to transfer, the original rules--sit out a year--are preferable to what's going on now. If it were up to me, those rules would be waived if a coach leaves/gets fired/retires. Then you can leave & be eligible immediately.
  15. Sisyphean, huh? I'll put that one on the mantel until needed, right next to "cromulent".😁
  16. And even more between the P-5 & the rest. If you're a mid-major in basketball, Judicious recruiting & talent development over 2-3 years used to culminate in a Cinderella-type season. Now, if you find a diamond-in-the-rough you have to hope the kid isn't treating your program like a AAA farm team, knowing he can leave w/o having to sit out a year & one way or another P-5 schools can tamper to their hearts content. I'm not a fan of any mid-major schools, but the thought of that just makes me want to puke.
  17. It's funny, watching Chafin work I was thinking to myself "The guy is throwing a boatload of really, really good 0-2, 1-2 pitches." Problem was he never was 0-2, 1-2. I mean, once you've walked a couple there isn't much excuse to not at least get ahead with strike one, cuz they're gonna give you plenty of rope to hang yourself. One of the talking heads, after the first walk blurted out that it wasn't the worst thing in the world. It took me all of a half-second to disagree because you had a unicorn coming up---a proficient bunter---followed by someone who, even if the bunt wasn't successful, isn't going to hit into a DP. That inning might've been drastically different if the first walk never happened.
  18. As would I. And if we offered Adams & Lara for Candelario I'm glad they turned it down. I probably would've done Lara & Guilarte or something like that.
  19. It was, unfortunately, inevitable. Other than tape delay, there was a time when UW football being on live TV was a really big deal because it was so rare. Now Fox, ESPN & the others fulfill all our wishes, but there's a price to pay to feed the habit. Personally, I liked college sports much more when it was controlled by the school administrations & NCAA. Those hierarchies are far from perfect, as we all know. But I get the feeling I'll one day be pining for those imperfections when compared to TV calling the shots. Not looking forward to the day when the B10 & SEC might as well be the AFC & NFC, competing as ultra-hyped semi-pros, a twelve or sixteen team playoff, lax (if any) academic & recruiting standards, and studio analysts perfecting their art of self-promotion (oh yeah, we already have that one). It IS gratifying that UW will probably continue to do things the right way. I just wonder what, in a few years, the definition of "right way" will be.
  20. I remember Prince Fielder tearing up the Pioneer League in '02. But even that might not approach what Boeve has done so far.
  21. Kudos to his parents for making the ultimate sacrifice by abandoning an organization that is a model for us all in how do do things the Right Way.
  22. Thing is, you have to give up runner(s) either in the 1st OR the 9th, then nothing else. Burnes/Hader no-hitter, I believe the one baserunner was in the 7th. I seriously doubt they ever retired 26 in a row.
  23. I'm suspecting a franchise first tonight. I doubt Brewer pitchers have ever retired 26 hitters in a row in one game.
