  1. A lot of the hitters that were dealt at the deadline were IMO guys who would've commanded a lower price (in prospect capital) in past years. But offense is scarce enough right now that the prices went up. With all the warts he has I would've taken a flier on Gallo had he come cheaply. But Black? Absolutely no way.
  2. It's a well-known adage in baseball: Trades are never judged until all the evidence is in. Except of course unless you invoke the Ghostbear proclamation.
  3. Which is why he's leading off. And except for the last 20-some ABs he's been more than good enough in that role. CC is going to stick with him, if we've learned anything it's that he's adamant in what he believes. That attitude has served him well many times, and at times it's backfired. Of course, after a loss people are only going to think of the times it backfired. Having said that, anybody saying he should have had a day off today w/ McCutchen in LF & Hiura DHing makes a valid point. Like it or not though, a day off for him is much more likely to come vs a LHP.
  4. Taylor Floyd had a great year out of the pen in '21 but has really fallen off the face of the earth this year. Does anyone know the story there? Injury? Delivery/mechanics change?
  5. One of the TV guys, don't remember if it was Anderson or Rottino, mentioned he isn't doing the toe-tap anymore. If that's true I'd love to hear a justification for it.
  6. No, actually the reason why they did (today) is because he's been leading off, and it makes no sense to take him out of that spot simply because he's DHing as opposed to playing LF. One can argue he needs a day off; he hasn't been good at the plate for 5-6 days now. But if he's playing, moving him elsewhere in the order makes little to no sense.
  7. I was as surprised/disappointed as anyone when they didn't add a bat at the deadline. But the only way I'm going to criticize that is if I know exactly what each available player would've cost in prospect capital, and would I have been OK with giving that cost in return for said player. Drury is a good example. He cost the #6 prospect in the SD system. No one knows what that equates to in our system, but a good guess would be maybe the #4 guy, maybe #5. I'm not doing that. It's reasonable to think Josh Bell would've cost more than that. Again, no thanks. This was a year where I think they would've been willing to package 3 or 4 guys in maybe the 12-25 range. In other years that gets it done. This year, there was a premium on the available guys so it took more. For my money, I'm not trading one of our top 8 or 10 guys for a rental. For someone like Soto, again, I'm not whining about it unless I know the exact cost.
  8. JMO, but for me it's always about how the upcoming hitters perform vs LH or RH, rather than the pitchers "splits". But even then it didn't make a lot of sense once you got past Lars.
  9. Looking at the matchups, Rogers in the eighth was more of a "he's our eighth inning guy" decision more than anything. Nootbaar, sure. But Carlson is better against LHP, and after that it was kinda a no-brainer. So not a good decision. Don't know if there's a problem with Rogers' knee or not, as far as effectiveness is concerned. He was fine Saturday, so I'm not going to pile on about the knee.
  10. Now THAT'S a breath of fresh air, as opposed to the notion that Chourio should be up here. I have no idea of the ramifications regarding super2 or arbitration or any of that because that stuff bores me to tears, but I believe they might be thinking about it. People need to understand though, he's not "replacing Davis". No way he comes up here to fill a bench role. His coming up would be more about Taylor.
  11. The backup QB is ALWAYS the answer. Haven't you learned that by now????
  12. Bullpen is in great shape for today. That's huge w/Ashby on the hill. The trick is taking a lead into the middle innings. Ashbys' stuff is, at times, off-the-charts good. But the light hasn't come on yet as far as him putting it together for 5-6 innings. Today would be a nice day for that to happen.
  13. Fair enough. So we aren't winning the division since we didn't sweep?
  14. Rogers spent several years in Minnesota, and (I think) played his college ball at Kentucky. IF he's one of those guys who enjoys being in a little less of a fishbowl, and has a real positive experience here (likes the town, his teammates, clicks well with Chris Hook), I guess stranger things have happened. But someone will probably look for him to close games, and with Williams here for a stretch of time yet I'd say pretty doubtful.
  15. I don't see much wrong with this discourse. I mean, most of this is literary gold compared to stuff like "this is a bad team" or that "Stearns doesn't care because he's going to NY anyway".
  16. All I'm saying is a BP that's both quality & has great depth is always going to be a huge part of what we do to try to get to the finish line. Now CC has that. I too would love to see more offense.
  17. I can get the skepticism re Ruiz. But from what I understand his contact rate & ability to take walks has improved tremendously. If that continues to go northward he's the type of weapon I'd love to have on this roster.
  18. Due to the two prospects, fully critiquing this deal can't happen yet for quite awhile.
  19. You can see tonite what they were thinking regarding the "new" bullpen. Williams is Williams. Rogers isn't Hader if they're both on top of their games, but still pretty darn good. Bush, after what I've seen his last two times out, lengthens things considerably. Boxberger takes too much heat on here, but if Bush locates the breaking stuff like he has recently to go with upper 90s, he's better, and certainly a good late-inning option. And you still have Box & eventually Gott. CC has the pen depth he loves. This'll be the way we win games, boys & girls. Just hope to see consistency.
  20. McCutchen actually did a nice job forcing Wainwright to throw strikes there. Unfortunately the umpire didn't. Typical.
  21. As far as watching this team, the most challenging thing for me tonite will be trying to get through Brian Anderson spending the first hour or two genuflecting in front of Wainwright & Molina. If Wainwright has the same strike zone as the pitchers get in the LLWS-which often seems to be the case-it'll be a challenge. We actually swung the bats pretty well last night. Need a few more line drives to fall in.
  22. Serious question--why did you think this was a must-sweep series? We all would've loved that of course, but if they win 2 out of 3 they're done? Being a half game up? And I'm not predicting they win the next two either. It's just that must-sweep, at this time of the year, is reserved for a situation where you come into it something like 5-6 games behind. And even then........
  23. Let him get jammed frequently in his Brewer career. Let's see him hit toppers over the mound, slow rollers to 3B, high hoppers in the hole.........oh yeah, and bunts...........& beat out 85-95% of that stuff, like what seems to happen to our infield all too frequently. I'm only half-kidding.
  24. I used to love batting orders where the top 2 are pretty much interchangeable w/regard to their skills. You seldom if ever see it anymore. I guess with the universal DH you can have pretty much the same effect hitting one ninth & the other first, but I'd be on board with those two (or maybe Ruiz factoring in as well) someday hitting 1-2.
