  1. As far as discernable trade value, I suspect the last few days answered that. I too hope he does well, but I'm having trouble seeing how he fits other than a PH. And a couple of the prime candidates to be PH for will be pulled when a lefty takes the mound, hardly a matchup Keston's thrived in. I can see him taking some DH ABs, I'm just not sure how many.
  2. Using that analogy, I'd say a 3B or HR with Gasser, and 2B or 3B with Ruiz. But your opening sentence said it all. I feel there's a good chance Ruiz is up here anywhere btwn the next week to 9-1, hopefully the earlier end of that window. Maybe he values these guys enough that he didn't want to take the chance of Preller dealing them elsewhere in the offseason if/when his team fails again & he makes another bunch of Monopoly moves.
  3. RR's beards' theory could explain a lot of this. They may have held out for Gasser & Ruiz after being offered something different. Because bottom line, they didn't HAVE to move now on Hader but they did. And it's safe to assume there were other offers.
  4. We've seen many examples over the years that this is a "stay the course, big picture" type of organization. It's served them well overall. In this case, they wanted to somehow, someway at least get to September 1st w/o having to make a move on any of these catchers. Then you have a couple extra roster spots to play with & keeping them all is less cumbersome. It's like last nights' AB by Severino was the last straw. They're showing some urgency, which is interesting because it's so unlike their usual MO.
  5. I sense a little more urgency than they usually show. They just jettisoned Severino, and it was obvious they really didn't want to up until now.
  6. My gut tells me you'll get your wish if he lights up Nashville in the next handful of days. Same can be said for Frelick.
  7. It seemed to be getting closer & closer to the time they had to let go of Severino, whether they liked it or not. Didn't expect it today though. Guess that bases-loaded K really cost him lol. I'm seeing Hiura as a PH & occasional DH, don't know what else they can do with him. We'll see.
  8. Will the pitching be at a lower level in a few years? Possibly. But they seem to be on track towards an offense built more towards speed, OBP, contact, gap-to-gap. More consistency. To borrow a basketball term, tougher to guard. And historically this team has always seemed to put together bullpens that are above average. Then you need Peralta & Ashby to live up to the faith shown by the extensions,
  9. When you factor in everything--speed, defensive ability, arm, power--I value Wiemer much, much more than Peters. I wouldn't be swayed by Wiemers' recent struggles. Having said that I think Peters is too much to give for Rosenthal, but that dead horse has enough club marks on it.
  10. There are very few secrets anymore w/regards to player evaluation. I was expecting/hoping Hiura was involved as a trade piece over the last couple days, thinking some organization would lend a blind eye to the obvious flaws & see value somewhere in the analytics. Guess not.
  11. Agree. I gave them A "C". The more I hear about Ruiz the more I like him. We just don't know if he'll pay dividends in the next two months. Tim spelled it out well when he pointed out what happened last night. Tellez & Wong need to be hit for late vs LHP when you're trailing? OK, so be it. But then you can't afford to have the 3 catchers. Like I said in another thread, this 80-game thing with Severino screwed up the roster royally. It wasn't some one-or-two-week thing, so they felt they needed to go get someone. And with Narvaez hitting FA they want to keep all three. Of course, you also have to have 37 guys in your bullpen (slight exaggeration?). It's just a real dis-jointed roster. I would've loved Drury. The 18-yr-old SS, I know nothing about him but he was the Padres' #6 prospect. Not sure how that equates to our system but it tells me the price probably would've been too high for our taste. Certainly there were other possibilities; I'd love to know what some of the offers were/would've needed to be. Too late now. We need Adames & Urias to give us more, Wong to keep hitting, and anyone not on the current roster giving us a boost has to be named Ruiz or Frelick. Oh, and the pitching & run-prevention aspect has to hold up it's end better.
  12. Anyone out there know what his splits look like this season?
  13. The recent drafts bear this out. And I like it, a lot. I think it happens regardless of any stupid shift ban.
  14. There's some good stuff there. But one thing: You talk about trading Soto & getting prospects back. If you're competing for playoffs/world series in his last year, there's no way you can deal him w/o sabotaging your chances. The only practical way to do that is if you aren't competing at the end of his contract. I get the frustration re Stearns. But--and I don't want to sound like Bud or Wendy Selig-Prieb-- it's incredibly tough to balance all of this with their revenue streams compared to other teams. The above is just one of the things to consider. At the end of the day, they have to--HAVE TO--have a healthy farm system, top to bottom.
  15. Has to be a C for me due to the variables of Gasser & Ruiz. I don't think it's out of the question Ruiz could be the "bat" we wanted so badly, of course it's not certain to happen right away. It's the best offer Stearns had, otherwise it wouldn't have happened. I didn't like the bush deal at first, but if Kelly had rule 5 coming up I can get it. With Rosenthals' recent inactivity I didn't like giving up Peters. That just smelled to me like a deal you can make for something less, or not make it at all. I get the feeling they were really knocked off balance when Bell was included in the Soto deal. I loved the idea of picking up Drury but he went for SD's #6 prospect, so he was probably too expensive for our taste.
  16. IMO that says more about twitter than anything else.
  17. I guess I look at it like this: If we're being shut out, down 3 runs, and facing the opponents' ace pitcher, one out & no one on in the sixth, There's no way that ace walks back-to-back hitters to give us life. Burnes has been terrific, no doubt. But he's our ace; he needs to be better there, LH hitters & wonky strike zone notwithstanding.
  18. I have a feeling it could get to the point where it's at least considered. The roster could very well be good enough to get to the post-season provided we perform the way we were constructed to---pitching & run prevention. It's just not an ideal group w/the way it's put together. Tonite illustrated that.
  19. I suspect they tried to deal Narvaez &, with our wonderful luck, he's not having a strong year with the bat. So good luck getting any interest.
  20. He's in the mix for 2023 b/c you lose Narvaez & Feliciano is not good enough, yet, defensively. And they don't feel they're in a position to allow him leave for no compensation. Not saying it's a good enough reason, but that's it.
  21. Two things: This hinged on Burnes walking a pair w/a 3 run lead, one out & no one on. It was kind of an oddball strike zone but my goodness...... This magnified the lack of ability to add to the pos player group at the deadline. I'm fine with Brosseau, but If you're going to be hell-bent on hitting for Tellez & Wong vs LHP you're a man short. That damn 80 gamer by Severino keeps rearing it's ugly head. Drury was dealt for the Pads #6 prospect, so probably was too expensive. But this roster construction is gonna catch up to them. I wonder how long before we see Ruiz.
  22. Yep. You don't have to be a prospect hugger to think Peters was too high a price to pay for Rosenthal.
  23. Was just thinking that while walking the dog, which is when I do my best thinking. There's a good chance they were knocked off-balance a little when Bell was included in the Soto deal.
  24. Or just saying no. Again, it may work out. The one positive in this is they dealt from a position of strength in the system.
  25. Good post, but it still doesn't justify this particular trade IMO. As always when something leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I hope I'm wrong.
