  1. They'll make a move or two. First off, the poster child of this organization is to acquire a "bullpen piece", so that's pretty much a given. As to the offense, virtually everyone is the same or worse than what they turned in last year save for Peterson, job one is that has to change. It's infuriating to see what happened today vs Sampson, who was good but not great, and then see guys like Rivas & Higgins put up competitive ABs vs Burnes & Hader. I have a feeling, if an offensive upgrade is pulled off, it will involve not only farmhands but a piece or two on the current roster.
  2. His last two ABs he had the right idea, oppo-field wise. But in the 8th he was really cognizant about getting the ball up in the air. Self-defeating, and especially moronic with the infield in. He's just one of these guys who is particularly horrible when he gets into a funk.
  3. Is Brosseau available off the bench today? How many pitches did he throw yesterday??
  4. Burnes is capable of shutting down an opponent regardless of who is in/out of the lineup. I'm more concerned about Hiura in LF, although we have a couple starters where you feel you can maybe get away with having him in the OF, and one of them is going today. This concerned me from the moment we IL'd Taylor & replaced him with a third catcher, not to mention we were going several days with a guy in CF you were going to have to pinch hit for in a close game. Very disjointed roster right now.
  5. I understand none of this, yet to me it still makes more sense than stats guys putting a lot of stock in WAR.
  6. I never break down a schedule in that manner. Had I thought of it, I never would've guessed 8-2-1. Interesting.
  7. Big picture folks. It's a 4-2 road trip. Anyone disappointed just pretend we split in Tampa Bay & won 3 of 4 this weekend.
  8. Kinda funny how Taylor is hit in the head Thursday but isn't deemed to be IL-worthy until Severino is eligible to come back. I just hope we don't have a week full of key late AB's in the nine-hole. If we hit for Davis I guess it would be McCutchen moving to CF, or Peterson suddenly becomes even more versatile.
  9. All I'll say is that's a lot of pressure to put on Brosseau, asking him to have to get four outs in the ninth.
  10. We've had to endure an awful lot of bad luck with both injuries & lack of production (Cain) in the OF to get to the point where Jace finds himself out there. I would also hope those days are largely behind him, esp once Renfroe returns. What they decide to do in 2023 will be interesting. Peterson, for the first time, has wedged into the conversation as someone you might want to find a semi-everyday spot for. The financial comp w/LaStella sounds a little high to me. Even if he comes close to that we'll cut ties. I can't resist throwing this in.........that drag bunt he executed Sunday vs Toronto was one of the truly beautiful moments of the season. Just gorgeous.
  11. Houser has been mediocre to bad for quite awhile now, I agree. But I don't see him being lifted from the rotation anytime soon.
  12. Milner actually would've fit well there. L-R-L due up. They would've called Phillips back, but none of their PH's scare me except Choi, who wouldn't have been used. Fine to pull Williams back, but not for JA.
  13. I'm resigned to them sitting A-relievers down when the lead grows, but Alexander was put in an unfamiliar situation, and it's not like we were up 6-7 runs. Not a great spot for him. I actually wouldn't mind him being looked at as a piggyback guy with Ashby, who has shown no propensity to go 6-7 strong innings, when he comes back.
  14. I suspect there ARE more runs scored if the ball is hit harder, over the course of a season. That probably doesn't help much in certain situations though, in game X, inning X, when you really need 1 run, when contact is imperative, when even advancing a runner can make a difference between winning & losing. To me, it's the same attitude that will lead to (probably) outlawing shifts next season. I feel in many ways, the propensity to bow down before analytics, total runs scored over a season, exit velo, launch angle, etc has many thinking those things are directly related to winning when in so very many cases they aren't. I'll give the players of decades ago one big edge over those of today: they understood what it took to WIN, given that day, the pitcher, the score, inning, etc. Many today IMO don't. And to me, that's everything w/regards to watchability. And you're right, the toothpaste is gone. Which is a bad thing not regarding analytics itself, but for the attitude it's created.

  16. I think the focus then was on hitting successfully, hitting effectively, as opposed to hitting the ball hard & being lauded for walking back to the dugout as the play-by-play guy chirps out "That ball left the bat at 104mph!!!". As for Oglivie, it was IMO one of the more effective personnel moves of the Bamberger era, trading for him & then a year later receiving Slaton right back.

  18. ...........And Small went yesterday, meaning he was more-or-less on sked. Personally, I'd love to briefly visit an alternate universe yesterday where Kirk had the exact same injury, except CC was his manager, just to see if he would've been allowed to DH. This thing about his being accused of slow-playing injuries, no one can prove or disprove whether he goes too far. It certainly can catch your attention though.
  19. Please, don't give Manfred any ideas. I just hope we don't devolve to the entire postgame spread being a salad bar, with Matt Wise passing out the tongs.
  20. And in the Presser, CC barely touched on the "he gave us six" factor. I was wrong. Admitting that on message boards can be good for the soul.
  21. I agree, except I was NEVER much of a sabermetrics guy. Some of that stuff has it's place but it's gotten way too obsessive IMO.
  22. I would too, but you're talking about a kid who, at his age, shows not only ability but the plate discipline of an eight-year vet. AND was moved at a young age from 2B to SS w/o missing a beat. That's a real high bar.
  23. I think Adames is like a great many players today, in that there are some really impressive skills that may never come to full fruition due to way too many K's.
  24. Which kinda sounds like, I dunno...............bitterness?
  25. No, especially if you include volume of posts. BTW, I just posted a comment 15 min ago that disparaged Houser, and ridiculed Counsell. Balance.
