  1. Been wondering the same thing regarding the addition of Renfroe/Taylor. Wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to include one of the catchers and/or Hiura as they talk trade possibilities with other teams. Obviously these guys aren't trade headliners but the roster is really disjointed with 3 catchers and Hiura has, I suspect, gotten at least a bit of notice with his recent production. I do think McCutchen will be the backup CF for the foreseeable future, which concerns me. Greatly.
  2. Pitch him on Tuesday & Sunday, then give him a couple extra days into the post ASG portion of the season if they want to give him a break. Horrible decision IMO.
  3. Yep. He either is fine with it or feels they have no other options. Looking at what's on the farm I think they're trying to get away from that, of course it then depends on how people pan out.
  4. For me, this isn't about debating the merits of Sveum. They were 3-11 in Yosts' last 14 games, and hadn't reached the postseason in what seemed like forever. They were facing the prospect of missing out on the playoffs after acquiring Sabathia. They felt the need to do something, which I agreed with under the circumstances.
  5. I get the frustration, I really do. But sometimes I think some of you would be better off following the NFL, where you can watch your team lose three or four in a row & then happily dump all over them & then bury them. Anyone who saw a team lacking from the beginning, and sees things playing out the way they predicted, good for you. But it's way too early to write this off, it's way too early to blow anything up. They need to play much better. That transcends "they're only beating bad teams" or "wait until they play so-and-so". If they find some consistency, they'll win more than their share of games, regardless of their opponent. I have no idea if they'll fail in that search for consistency, or succeed. And neither does anyone else. One sixty-two.
  6. I'm convinced they don't make it in that year w/o the move. "Change for the sake of change" sounds like a useless, hollow strategy, but it sometimes works in sports. It worked then. I actually clamored for it in '07 as well.
  7. This is kinda what you get when there's two OF's still on the IL, and your actual prospects who are OF's are deemed not ready yet (and probably aren't). I'd actually think of leading off Brosseau, but other than that this is almost name-out-of-a-hat time vs a lefty starter.
  8. That's a valid point; I've been a Feliciano fan since he was playing "up" a level in the Midwest league as an 18-yr-old. It just doesn't seem like he's catching on a regular basis, even after getting healthy, and Reetz hasn't been exclusively behind the plate anyway. I think there's room for both. They view it differently. Probably won't be the last time lol.
  9. Some do. But players get promoted from AA to AAA all the time, too. I would hope he isn't still in Biloxi simply to keep him from getting a raise.
  10. The thing about Wiemer, he's a big boy with power but also has the arm, speed, and defense. It's nice to get away from the draft picks of previous regimes--bats that you hope develop, and if they do you kinda sorta find a position for them, or if they already have one hope they'll be adequate. Without seeing his games I'd assume he's in a little adjustment-counter adjustment mode right now at Biloxi as his average has dropped. Still real high on him. I
  11. I'd be more than willing to deal him, if he's a necessary piece to a trade that helps the offense. Agree with Homer, I think it's a little curious he's still at AA at age 26 & needs to be movin' on up.
  12. Please start Burnes Tuesday & Sunday. If I read that Counsell is holding him back primarily due to an all-star appearance, there might be a laptop-shaped indentation on our family-room wall. That game in LA week after next is ranked 163rd in level of importance.
  13. Kinda funny to say this because they already trailed at this time, but to me the whole game hinged on the McCutchen AB in the 7th. In a huge situation he puts up his worst AB of the day. I know he isn't close to what he once was, but for someone with his experience that was just incredibly ugly. This is, in no way, a bad team. I think 'curious' describes them really well.
  14. We've all seen the way young starters have been handled here in recent years--starting out in the pen for 2-3 inning stints, then the role gradually increases. That's where Ashby should be right now, but the starter-innings lost to the IL have accelerated his role, and the results have been unfortunate. The ability hasn't gone away, here's hoping he takes the next step soon.
  15. I'm not a fan of acquiring Gallo. But in trying to keep an open mind, as inconsistent as he was with Texas, he's been even worse in New York. That franchise isn't for everyone, and maybe you get a bump simply from him getting out of the fishbowl. He also HAS played CF, but I wouldn't be overly optimistic as to how well. He'd have to come really cheap.
  16. Classy post. Not enough of this on fan message boards. Well done. Funny thing with Tellez. He often shows, to me anyway, a knack for trying to work to get his pitch, for knowing what he should & shouldn't swing at. Then out of nowhere he has an AB, or succession of ABs, where he chases. It's more than likely feeling the need to be "the guy", which seldom ends well. Watching him for a year now I see a power hitter who is smart enough to also take his walks, but doesn't do so nearly enough.

  18. That's the part that makes me say "no, thanks". I have no problem acquiring Bell if the cost isn't prohibitive, but not for Tellez. He defends his position well, is productive (although he certainly has the capacity to walk more, and should), and is tied up for awhile. Having him & Bell makes for a bit of a disjointed roster & makes it trickier to get McCutchen ABs but I would live with that. At the end of the day I'd much rather see a CF brought in but looking at the options I don't know how realistic that is.

  20. Sampson is a journeyman-type who threw well today, but admittedly not well enough to give up only one run. Hughes & Martin have been serviceable this season. Givens has been decent, and Robertson much more than that. Not trying to defend a poor offensive performance, just wonder what the definition of "bad" is. Definitely, the late-inning guys need & deserve more of a cushion than they're getting.
  21. Wong, Urias & Adames are underperforming IMO. No one is "overperforming" (something you need to have a special season) except, as I said, Peterson. No acquisition will overcome that. If they completely lack any depth pitching-wise, they wouldn't have started the season with a six-man rotation. Given the starts missed by that group, I think most teams would be guilty of "lacking depth" too. For whatever reason, Small isn't where they need him to be right now, and that hurts.
  22. If things stay the same as they are this moment, regarding performance & the current roster, you're right. If things change with regards to both, definitely not. Or somewhere in between. With many fans, I think their outlook will change in collaboration with their underwear in the next ten weeks.
  23. It depends on need, where the other team is at right now in their overall plan, injuries, etc. There's arguably some value, of course I'm not talking about someone who would be a centerpiece or anything.
  24. In a 162 deal, yeah, it is (referring to your first statement). The offense needs to be better, no doubt. The quality of the ABs needs to be better. That greatly transcends the opponent on a particular day, a season series, a rivalry, etc. Hard to disagree with the second part, though.
