  1. He was going back on the ball, so it was a good read by the baserunner. But it's not like he would've made a good throw either way. It's one thing to have a weak arm, but to exacerbate it the release point is horrible. He gets so much air under the throws, you get that high hop and there's no way anyone will get thrown out. And it just never.......gets......corrected. On a positive note, Bally sports, during the Counsell presser, flashed the standings........from like two weeks ago. Apparently we're still 3.5 games up lol.
  2. I think the above is an outstanding point. I recently brought up the fact that they had three recent callups, all of whom were productive offensively w/o having had a taste of the bigs before. And, if WE had three key performers around 40 yr old I'm sure there would be some on this board pulling the sky down over everyones' head regarding that. This isn't to say the Brewers are in terrific shape, just to point out they don't necessarily have to see everything fall into place perfectly to win the division.
  3. He's responded to it well. I'll be satisfied if he locks into the habit of spraying the ball, seeing a lot of pitches & simply finding ways to reach base. Please don't start feeling so much more confident that you return to jumping at pitches, trying to pull & once again turning into a 4-3 groundout machine. His HR the other day, I thought it was a terrific sign that it went to CF. An optimism thread can't be complete w/o a mention of Alexander. I know W-L are pretty meaningless stats for a pitcher, but he could easily have 2-3 wins.
  4. Or, we could just have a more effective form of revenue sharing and/or salary cap, then such an idea (imaginative as it is) wouldn't be needed. I'll imagine the union going for this, as I sit on my unicorn trotting down the road to go visit Elvis.
  5. This is the frustrating part of having a team like this. CC is a big picture, stay-the-course manager. And it's worked extremely well. But when you get into a malaise like this & just want to see emotion, a sense of urgency, some anger, you just aren't going to see it (unless he gets a chance to vent at an umpire like last night, and even then it takes a week + of crappy baseball to bring it out). If directed at his players a la Piniella, it probably wouldn't have a positive effect anyway as emotionally they don't seem to be built to respond positively to that. First game of the Philly series notwithstanding, just take a lead into the 6th-7th for once.
  6. I recall my twelve-yr-old self being excited when they got him. I knew he was a contributor for Philly, which meant (given our roster) he was probably going to give us an immediate boost, which he did (IIRC he homered in his first or second game). I recall watching his 6-hit game on TV. Road game In Cleveland I think? But my fondest memory of Johnny was the day he threw me a ball from LF during pregame. Thanks, Briggsy!!!

  8. Are we certain Narvaez is being activated tonight, that we aren't requiring him to breathe on a mirror for a couple days? Certainly hope so, it looks like Victor could use a little downtime.
  9. I'm getting awfully sick of Lane Thomas being DiMaggio against us, and against everyone else simply being Lane Thomas.
  10. Yeah, like I said this idea has some merit based mainly on how poorly Lo is doing. If Davis is indeed a strong defender it's hard to argue against it at this point.
  11. Davis is 30 yr old and a career .171 hitter in the bigs. The fact that he's even being considered (if he indeed is) is more an indictment of how poor Cain has been than anything. Guys get that AAAA label & it's hard to shake, but if he indeed is as solid defensively as some on here say, then he has to be at least on the radar. I hate the tired old internet message board "He can't be any worse" line. This is one of the few times it has some merit.
  12. Some will be upset that they didn't acquire the "right" player, or spent too much, or should GO FOR IT!!!!!!!! & empty out the top 10 prospect list. But they aren't standing pat. Anyone with worries that they are, relax.
  13. Largely agree. I've always said it isn't so much WHO, but HOW you're playing. Caratini whiffing a third strike nowhere near the dirt, that's two runs. Burnes allowing the pitch count to escalate results in the bullpen starting in the 5th rather than the seventh or eighth inning, which leads to Kelley having to pitch. That's four more. Phillies are playing real well right now, but the way we're playing is a much bigger factor.
  14. Looking at St.Louis, one of the things I think is really significant is that they've had holes to fill due to injuries/lack of production and Yepez, Donovan, & Gorman have all come up for their first taste of big league pitching, and all three have been productive immediately. That's kinda ridiculous. Bet on some regression.
  15. Personally I wouldn't want Gallo unless they could acquire him for very, very little. I see the problems of the offense right now, then I look at Gallo and think "lather, rinse, repeat".

  17. Agreed. They have more than enough on the farm to upgrade the offense, the question is what will player A take to acquire, and should they pay that? A generalization is that they have tended to pay, but not overpay. "Overpay" is subject to opinion, of course. But this has never been an "empty out the farm for a rental" organization, nor should it be.

  20. That's the only bone I have to pick with this batting order, I wonder if it's simply a byproduct of it being only Renfroes' second game back, along with Cutch starting to put up better ABs. Big picture, I would also imagine Renfroe a spot or two higher. As for McCutcheon, I have no idea where he would settle in, especially if our new leadoff hitter starts getting on base consistently.
  21. I don't want to pile on Reyes for being put into situations he isn't designed to be put in. If not for us imitating a MASH unit w/regards to our infielders he isn't hitting in the ninth. Of course, Knebel walks the bags loaded then suddenly finds the plate. If he didn't take the first pitch it would've been the height of irresponsibility. Of course, strike one, immediate hole. Now if you want to rail on the decision to not go to Turang when Adames went down, that's legit.
  22. The only guy I can think of is Sheffield, hype-wise. Not to sound like I'm 90 years old or anything, but if prospect hype in the early 70s was like it is now Darrell Porter would've had a lot, although probably not this much. Given his age, I wonder if they're thinking of leaving him at Carolina & letting him experience success, give him an off season of development, then straight to Biloxi in '23 (apologies to any fans in the Fox Valley area as that would suck for you guys).
  23. As this season unfolds, I'm confident that whatever glaring deficiencies we may prove to have, Urias won't be one of them. Provided the thumb doesn't prove to be a chronic thing.
  24. You watch him run the bases (when he actually reaches base) and look at some of the balls he runs down in left field, and you know the guy's healthy. I sometimes wonder if there's something going on where, after shattering the kneecap on a foul ball, it's affected the aggressiveness just enough where the swing will never be the same. Strange as it sounds, a part of his psyche may think it could happen again. It's a totally bizarre theory but if Steve Blass & Steve Sax can forget how to throw a ball straight, who knows? If CC moves him I hope it's either to the leadoff spot or ninth. Give his legs a chance to make a difference in games. Sixth or seventh, I could see him snuffing out some rallies.
