Breakdown The Brewers began their week in Philadelphia to take on one of the league's best, the Phillies. And it showed. Behind three of their best starters, the Phillies would sweep Milwaukee in a series that didn’t see much offense on either side. Pat Murphy would call the series a much-needed teaching moment for the squad. The Phillies are now the sole team in the NL that hasn’t been swept after handing the Brewers their first clean series loss all season. The worries from the Phillies series quickly faded with a 10-0 victory against Detriot on Friday. Blake Perkins and Brice Turang would drive the offense in game 1, behind eight innings on one hit ball from Tobias Myers. Game two would see a four-run comeback capped by a go-ahead two-run double from Jackson Chourio and a dominant bullpen performance. The Brewers would look to make it a .500 road trip in game three behind Bryce Wilson, facing off against Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal. It would not turn out that way. Skubal pitched to Cy Young form, and Bryse Wilson surrendered ten runs through the first five innings. The Brewers would drop to 2-4 on the road trip. Highlights Jackson Chourio’s go-ahead double in Saturday’s game. Some nifty baserunning from Brice Turang. Breakdown The week would start against the Cubs. Robert Gasser and Justin Steele would match up on the pitching front, and both would turn in scoreless efforts. The Cubs bullpen would implode, surrendering 5 runs rather quickly, allowing Milwaukee to take game one. The Cubs would bounce back in game two behind Ben Brown, throwing seven no-hit innings. The Cubs bullpen would blow another lead, allowing the game to go to extra innings, but an injury scare with Trevor Megill saw the Cubs score five runs in the tenth inning and win 6-3. It looked like Milwaukee would be in for another low-scoring affair in game three, with the Cubs sending out league leader in ERA Shota Imanaga. That wouldn’t be the case. The Brewers offense would hang seven runs in 4.1 innings on the blossoming ace and would eventually win the game 10-6. The final game would be won by Milwaukee 6-4, behind yet another solid start from Colin Rea and another poor effort from the Cubs bullpen. Next into town would be the struggling White Sox. It was apparent right out of the gate. Game one saw the Brewers collect 23 hits, a season high not just for them but for any team in the league. Shockingly, they’d only score 12 runs but win 12-5. White Sox ace Garret Crochet would toe the slab in game two, calming the Brewer's offense. Willy Adames would drive in the last three runs of the game, including a walk-off single to win game two 4-3. The final game would see Freddy Peralta struggle early and exit the game early with a high pitch count. Highlights Jackson Chourio hasn’t seen the most consistent playing time, but he’s been quietly showing signs of improvement. Plus, it’s always nice when a hanging slider gets crushed. The Brewers' third walk off of the year belongs to Willy Adames How good has Joey Oritz been? A slick diving grab from Jackson Chourio. When an offense puts up 23 hits, there are bound to be a few standout performances There’s something about Gary Sanchez in clutch spots this year. Breakdown The Brewers began their week in Miami, taking on the Marlins. In the first game of the set, starter Joe Ross left the game after one inning due to injury. The bullpen filled in admirably, but Marlins starter Ryan Weathers held the Brewers to just one earned run, leading his team to a 3-2 win. Milwaukee took game two behind Robert Gasser, who limited the damage through six innings despite surrendering 10 hits. William Contreras and Christian Yelich each drove in multiple runs in the game, resulting in a 7-5 Milwaukee victory. Alas, in the rubber match Wednesday, the bats went cold. Miami starter Jesús Luzardo had a career-high eight scoreless innings, backed by a first-inning homer from Jazz Chisholm, and Miami won 1-0. Freddy Peralta had a strong start, but was saddled with the loss despite seven innings of one-run ball. The team bounced back over the weekend in Boston, though. The league’s second-best pitching staff had trouble limiting the Brewers' bats in games one and two. Lefty Jared Koenig started two games as the opener, becoming the first Brewer since Zack Greinke to do so. Bryse Wilson and Colin Rea each pitched well in the piggyback role, and the offense found more success than they did in Miami. Sunday saw the Red Sox pitch on the level they've been used to all year, with Tanner Houck only allowing one run in the Brewers 2-1 loss. The Brewers will be home all of next week, for two sets against the respective Chicago teams. It is worth noting the Brewers have been better on the road this year. They'll look to find success against two teams that are struggling right now. Highlights Is it safe to say Brice Turang’s quantum leap is for real? Milwaukee used a five-run inning on Saturday to beat the Red Sox. Breakdown The Brewers started their week with a home stand against the Pirates. Game one would see the Pirates jump out to an early lead behind Mitch Keller, and despite a late comeback effort from Milwaukee, they’d take game one. Games two and three would be won by the Brewers behind Joe Ross and Robert Gasser. The offense would put up ten runs in game three, including three hits from William Contreras. Milwaukee would then travel to Houston after an off-day Thursday, beginning their longest road trip of the regular season. A three-run homer from Jeremy Peña would sink the Brewers in game one, with Freddy Peralta being saddled with the loss. A three-run homer from William Contreras after a 13-pitch at-bat would be the difference maker in game two, as the club would beat Justin Verlander to even up the series. The rubber match saw Colin Rea get off to a slow start, giving up four runs in the first inning, and didn’t make it past the 5th inning. The Brewer’s offense would chip away, but the bullpen was unable to keep the Astros offense down. Highlights The Brewers’ best AB of the season came from William Contreras’ 13-pitch battle with Justin Verlander. Joey Ortiz has had quite the hot streak. Here are the five home runs the Brewers hit in Wednesday’s win. Sal Frelick’s catch of the year. Breakdown The Brewers’ struggles from the previous week carried over into their first series this week, against Kansas City. Bryse Wilson outdueled Royals ace Cole Ragans through six innings in the opener, but the Brewers bullpen fumbled the lead to lose 3-2. The second game of the series saw Colin Rea struggle, not making it past the fifth inning. This time, it was the Royals bullpen’s turn to blow a late lead, giving up a two-out go-ahead three-run blast to Willy Adames, allowing Milwaukee to capture the second game in the set. The Brewers couldn't capture the rubber match, though, with a late comeback falling short, resulting in a 6-4 loss. The Cardinals series was a return to form, from top to bottom. The homecoming Crew got good starts from Tobias Myers, Robert Gasser, and Freddy Peralta. The offense found success, too, scoring 23 runs over the first three games. They couldn't hang onto an early lead Sunday, but taking the series and securing a winning record still made the week a successful one. More importantly, Milwaukee stayed healthy. In fact, they got healthier. Christian Yelich’s return to the lineup gave them an immediate boost in production. A fantastic debut from Robert Gasser inspires confidence that he could plug one of the holes in the rotation. Even Myers had arguably his most encouraging start of the season. On the bullpen front, the Brewers have established more stability. Trevor Megill has placed a claim on the closer gig. Bryan Hudson and Hoby Milner have established themselves as late-inning stalwarts, as well. This kind of consistency will do just fine until Devin Williams is able to return. Highlights Adames’s game-winner at Kauffman Stadium is the swing of the season so far. Rumor has it that he even called his shot. Home runs were the theme in the first game against St. Louis, with big flies from Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz, but none were more majestic than this Jake Bauers bomb. Brice Turang’s on a quest to add some gold to his glove. This double play is just one of many for the highlight reel. They don’t give out awards for the best bunt, but if they did, this one by Yelich would win every time. Breakdown The Brewers’ week started at home, welcoming the struggling Rays to Milwaukee. Tampa Bay would squeak by a 1-0 win on Monday, behind an excellent start from righthander Ryan Pepiot. Bryse Wilson was saddled with the unfortunate loss, as the only run he gave up was a first-inning RBI groundout. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the Brewers’ offense take it to the Rays' pitching staff, scoring 15 runs over the two days, highlighted by the debut of Tyler Black and by some big hits from Willy Adames, who homered three times. The pitching staff locked down the Tampa Bay offense, but the umpires stole the headlines. Tuesday’s game was cruising along, until a 3-0 fastball struck Rays outfielder Jose Siri in the lower half, causing the umpires to gather on the infield. They elected to eject Freddy Peralta, and subsequently manager Pat Murphy. In Siri’s next at bat, Abner Uribe got the outfielder to ground out, but a brawl broke out after Uribe stepped on first base, then intentionally brushed by Siri in a minatory fashion. Uribe and Siri were ejected, but after the dust settled, the Brewers did complete a convincing win. Wednesday's game was a smoother effort, but there was a bit of controversy with Thyago Vieira and his glove late, in which the umpires forced the reliever to change gloves. The Brewers took the rubber match, 7-1. In the aftermath of the fights, the following suspensions came down: 5 games - Peralta (Appealed) 6 games - Uribe (Appealed) 2 games - Murphy (Served 5/3 to 5/4) After a day off, the Brewers headed to Chicago for a weekend series. They mounted a stirring comeback Friday afternoon, scoring three on Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay in the 8th inning to win the game 3-1. Saturday’s game started badly, as Jameson Taillon shut the Brewers offense down through six innings, while Brewers starter Tobias Myers struggled with command, and only made it through three. The Brewers tried another comeback against the Cubs bullpen, but a Patrick Wisdom homer and a late RBI single ensured they would come up one run short, losing 6-5. Peralta toed the slab for the rubber match Sunday, against Cubs starter Javier Assad. Assad and the Cubs' defense outdueled the Milwaukee ace, and the Brewers finished the week by being shutout for the second time, 5-0. Overall, the absences of players on the injured list are starting to rear their ugly heads. Top to bottom, performances from the bullpen, rotation, and offense have been inconsistent. Even the umpires have been butting heads with the Brewers recently. A new week might do the Brewers some good, but a clean slate of health would do them even better. Highlights How about this homer-saving grab from Joey Wiemer? Moment of the year? Tyler Black’s major-leauge debut on Tuesday saw him pick up two hits, the second of which was called by his dad (a Canadian sportscaster) from the stands. Colin Rea was excellent in his start on Wednesday, turning in six scoreless against the Rays. Just Willy Adames crushing baseballs. Adames had a big series against his former club early in the week, but his hot hitting continued with a go-ahead knock in the series opener against the Cubs. 3 Stars of the Week 3rd Star - Willy Adames (4H, 3 HR, 9 RBI) 2nd Star - Joe Ross (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) 1st Star - Colin Rea (6.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 K) Looking Forward Monday, 5/5 - Brewers @ Royals (6:40 pm CDT) - Bryse Wilson vs. LHP Cole Ragans Tuesday, 5/6 - Brewers @ Royals (6:40 pm CDT) - Colin Rea vs. RHP Seth Lugo Wednesday, 5/7 - Brewers @ Royals (1:10 pm CDT) - Joe Ross vs. RHP Brady Singer Thursday, 5/9 - Cardinals @ Brewers (6:40 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Friday, 5/10 - Cardinals @ Brewers (7:10 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Saturday, 5/11 - Cardinals @ Brewers (6:15 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Sunday, 5/12 - Cardinals @ Brewers (1:10 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Note: It’s likely Robert Gasser, or another starter from AAA will replace Freddy Peralta in the St. Louis series, as Peralta announced his intention to serve his five-game suspension beginning Monday. 13. It was a weird week for the Brewers. Between injuries, close games, and blowouts, the Brewers found a way to pick up a few wins this past week. Here's the recap if you missed any of the action! Breakdown The Brewers began the week in Pittsburgh, playing their first four games against their division rival this season. Runs were hard to come by in the first three games, with Pirates starters Jared Joned and Bailey Falter turning in great starts to beat the Brewers in the first two games, while the Brewers used a big inning off of Josh Fleming to win game three 3-2. The final game of the series saw the respective ace of both teams go up against each other, with Freddy Peralta and Mitch Keller toeing the slab. Uncharctertiscally, both struggled, with neither man pitching into the sixth inning. A pinch-hit two-run homer from Gary Sanchez off of Aroldis Chapman would be the difference maker, as the Brewers would win 7-5 to split the series. The Yankees would come to town to finish the week. Game 1 was started by Colin Rea, who struggled to keep the ball in the ballpark. The Brewers would battle back with the help of Joey Ortiz, whose first major league home run and subsequent walk-off single in the 11th would bring the Brewers a 7-6 victory in game 1. The subsequent day, the Yankees bats would come alive, thrashing Milwaukee 15-3 on the Brewers' second sellout of the year. The rubber match saw Tobias Myers face off against old foe Marcus Stroman, but neither starter would pitch past the 4th inning. A three-run blast from Jake Bauers would get the Brewers back in the game before some extremely questionable umpiring would sink the Brewers in the final game of the week. It was a week where a handful of things didn’t go Milwaukee's way, especially on the injury front. Wade Miley is done for the season. Jakob Junis suffered a setback. Even Christain Yelich isn’t progressing with his injury as the team might’ve hoped. Still, guys like Blake Perkins and Joey Ortiz have stepped up to keep the Brewers in games, while the bullpen has remained relatively steady. Even Tobias Myers, despite the early results, has the chance to contribute. Going forward, health will be key. Highlights Jackson Chourio’s bat has gone cold over the past week or two, but this play might be his finest defensive one in the big leagues so far. Another week, another William Contreras highlight. That tends to happen when you’ve been one of the best hitters in baseball. Gary Sanchez isn’t off to the fastest start in a Brewers uniform, but his pinch-hit two-out, two-strike, two-run homer off of Aroldis Chapman is the swing of the year so far. Breakdown The offensive torrent couldn’t last forever, but the Brewers hit a wall in their series with the Padres early in the week. It was a six-run fifth inning that sunk the Brewers on Monday, with the San Diego offense using a combination of weak contact and luck to batter starter Joe Ross. Dylan Cease started the following day for the Padres, and again, the Brewers were held to three runs. Milwaukee starter Wade Miley battled through a four-run first inning, but six innings of one-run baseball from Cease shortened the timeframe of the Brewers' would-be comeback. The two losses to the Padres (following a Sunday defeat in Baltimore) were the first times the Brewers had lost back-to-back games all year. It looked like the Brewers might lose four in a row early Wednesday, with Padres starter Michael King carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Willy Adames broke it up with a two-out single. A Brice Turang single and stolen base followed by a RBI knock from Blake Perkins the following inning delivered the only run the Brewers needed. Bryse Wilson and four other bullpen arms shut the Padres out, capped off by a Joel Payamps save, allowing the Brewers to avoid a sweep. An off day on Thursday led into a three-game set in St. Louis, with Freddy Peralta getting the start to kick off the series. As Peralta has been doing all year, he gave the Brewers another fantastic start, throwing six innings of scoreless baseball. William Contreras provided all the offense, driving in both runs, including the game-winner in the 10th inning, as the Brewers toppled the Cardinals 2-1. All the close games and scraping runs together must’ve gotten on the team's nerves, as they exploded offensively Saturday, putting together a season-high 18 hits and 12 runs. Starter DL Hall struggled yet again, but the Cardinals offense couldn’t keep pace with the Brewers. Jackson Chourio was on base four times, including a home run, and Milwaukee won 12-5. The final game of the week brought us back to the trend set early in the week. Cardinals starter Sonny Gray had double-digit strikeouts, but the Brewers were able to push across two runs in the 7th, backed by five scoreless innings from Colin Rea, 2 1/3 of scoreless relief from Bryan Hudson, and another Payamps save. Highlights Turang is still hot. Jackson Chourio’s start has been a bit slower, but the two young players provided the spark on Saturday to get the Brewers the lead for good. William Contreras has been the Brewers' best offensive player. His go-ahead RBI single in the 10th on Friday was the difference maker in that game, but just another clutch hit for Contreras on the season, Abner Uribe seems to have lost his temporary closer role, but he hasn’t lost his touch with the glove. Jackson Chourio’s first long ball of the week was a pretty one. Blake Perkins has been one of the best players on the team this year. His home run robbery of Sunday might have been the play of the year too. 3 Stars of the Week 3rd Star - Colin Rea (5.0 IP, O ER, 3 K) 2nd Star - Freddy Peralta (6.0 IP, 0 ER, 7 K) 1st Star - William Contreras ( 307./357./.392 2 BB, 2B, 5 RBI) Looking Forward Monday, 4/22 - Brewers @ Pirates (5:40 pm CDT) - RHP Joe Ross vs. RHP Jared Jones Tuesday, 4/23 - Brewers @ Pirates (5:40 pm CDT) - LHP Wade Miley vs. LHP Bailey Falter Wednesday, 4/24 - Brewers @ Pirates (5:40 pm CDT) - TBD vs. RHP Quinn Priester Thursday, 4/25 - Brewers @ Pirates (11:35 am CDT) - TBD vs. RHP Mitch Keller Friday, 4/26 - Yankees @ Brewers (7:10 om CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Saturday, 4/27 - Yankees @ Brewers (6:10 om CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Sunday, 4/28 - Yankees @ Brewers (1:10 om CDT) - TBD vs. TBD View full article

Breakdown If you couldn’t tell judging by the scores, the past week was all about offense. The Brewers offense came into the game Sunday having scored 7+ runs in six straight games, tying a franchise record. And while old friend Corbin Burnes and the Orioles bullpen would finally quiet the Brewers' offense on Sunday, the Brewer offense still put up a valiant effort against a Baltimore that hasn't been swept since May of 2022. The pitching staff was solid last week too, with the only collectively poor performance coming on Monday, although the Brewers' poor defense early in that game didn’t do them any favors. Freddy Peralta, Joe Ross, Colin Rea, and Wade Miley all turned in good starts last week, while DL Hall labored in his start against the Orioles. The offense saw contributions from everyone, but perhaps the biggest thing to note was Christain Yelich re-aggravating his back injury. Blake Perkins filled in admirably the past week, but the Brewers losing their hottest bat is not what they envisioned. Health will be important for the team going forward, as players like Aaron Ashby and Joey Wiemer have already earned calls from Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers are already without Garret Mitchell and Devin Williams for the foreseeable future, and with Jakob Junis and Christian Yelich battling injuries that may sideline them for a handful of weeks, health will be key to the Brewers going forward. Highlights William Contreras has arguably been one of the best offensive players on the team this year, if not the league. On Sunday, he extended his hit streak to 10 games by taking Corbin Burnes to dead center to start the game. All of Jake Bauers’ highlights had come with the glove, but he picked a good time for his first Brewer home run on Saturday. The 3-run shot put the Brewers ahead for good and hopefully has provided a big boost of confidence for the Brewers' first basemen. Freddy Peralta has earned the moniker of ace. Fastball Freddy turned in his third straight quality start in the series opener against Baltimore, pitching six innings, giving up one run, and striking out 11. Blake Perkins hasn’t found himself with much playing time in the early going, but with the injury to Yelich, Perkins found himself starting in a handful of games last week. He hit his first home run in Cincinnati late, but his second of the year in Baltimore on Sunday gave the Brewers their first lead of the game. Joe Ross is the forgotten piece in a rotation full of what Pat Murphy lovingly described as “nobodies.” His start on Tuesday was key to the Brewers quieting a hot Cincinnati offense, where Ross tossed 6.1 innings of two-run ball. Breakdown After a successful opening series with the Mets, the Brewers faced the Twins in a two-game series, serving as Milwaukee’s home opener for the season. Game 1 was started by Jakob Junis, who threw four innings of one-run ball before giving it away to the bullpen. Christian Yelich added a solo homer, and Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang both drove in runs in the Brewers' eventual 3-2 win. The undefeated season would come to an end the next day, as the Twin used a five-run 7th inning to topple the Brewers. Both Joel Payamps and Bryse Wilson struggled to keep a cold Twin offense from breaking out late in the loss. The Brewers would then have the following Thursday off. The final series of the week saw the Seattle Mariners come to town, who had dropped their first two series of the year to the Red Sox and Guardians respectively. Friday’s game was won by Milwaukee, who used three solo home runs from Oliver Dunn, Willy Adames, and Christian Yelich, who has continued his offensive tear to begin the season. The Brewers won 6-5, but only after Abner Uribe struggled in the 9th, surrendering two runs and recording his first blown save of the season. Luckily for Milwaukee, Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz had his struggles too, walking four batters in the bottom of the 9th while recording only a single out. Seattle's pitching staff bounced back on Saturday though. Mariners starter Bryce Miller tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball, while Brewers starter DL Hall saw his pitch count rise quickly, leaving the game trailing 3-0 in the 6th inning. A Jackson Chourio two-run homer and sac fly from Rhys Hoskins made it 4-3 heading into the 9th. That's when former Brewer Luis Urias homered off of Hoby Milner to make it 5-3. Muñoz entered in the 9th, where he comfortably found the strike zone, and halted the Brewers' comeback. On Sunday, the Brewers were clearly unsatisfied with their offensive performance, as they trounced the Mariners early. They chased Mariners starter Emerson Hancock early, racking up 11 hits and eight runs before chasing the right-hander early in the 4th. They’d lead 10-2 at the end of the frame, and end up winning 12-4. The Brewers ended the week one game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central, but tied for the second-best record in the National League. They’ll look to find success against the Orioles and Reds on the road next week, who have both gotten off the winning starts. Highlights Jackson Chourio’s had his fair share of uncomfortable plate appearances at the MLB level this year, but the 20-year-old has shown the ability to punish mistakes from pitchers he has never seen before. He deposited his first two major league home runs last week, including the second blast below. Chourio ended the week with a season-slash line of .281/.324/.500. It took Christian Yelich 18 games to hit three home runs last year. I took him seven in 2024. Perhaps the most majestic of the three bombs was the one he hit Friday off of Mariners starter Logan Gilbert. Oliver Dunn has adopted the role of the unheralded rookie, but his consistent play at third base is exactly what the Brewers wanted from the Utah native. His first big-league home run came on Friday, earning a silent treatment from the Brewers dugout. The defense has been a calling card early. Perhaps no play was finer than this gem by Joey Ortiz made last Wednesday. … Or maybe it was this play by Oliver Dunn on Tuesday. You Decide. Although it was an offensive outburst that stole headlines on Sunday, starter Colin Rea continued his strong start to the season, pitching six innings and only surrendering one earned run, all while battling a stomach virus. Thyago Vieira closed the game, earning the rare three-inning save by pitching the final trio of frames. Other Tidbits The Brewers' offense was heavily reliant on the three true outcomes last week. They clubbed 10 home runs, walked 22 times, but stuck out 45 times in five games. The Brewers stole eight bases last week, bringing their season total to 16. Only the Reds have more, with 18. Brice Turang leads all of baseball with seven. His heavy reliance on speed and improved offensive output have been key to Milwaukee's success early. Gary Sanchez and Andruw Monasterio are now the only two players with at least one plate appearance and no hits. Willy Adames’ 165 strikeouts was the 10th most in the NL last year, but the Brewers SS has only struck out 4 times all season. 3 Stars of the Week 3rd Star - Willy Adames (.278/.381/.611, 2 HR, 2 RBI, SB) 2nd Star - Oliver Dunn (.333/.412/.667, HR, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 SB) 1st Star - William Contreras (.444/.545/.833, 2 HR, 2B, 6 RBI) Looking Forward Monday, 4/08 - Brewers @ Reds (5:40 pm CDT) - LHP Aaron Ashby vs. RHP Graham Ashcraft Tuesday, 4/09 - Brewers @ Reds (5:40 pm CDT) - RHP Joe Ross vs. RHP Frankie Montas Wednesday, 4/10 - Brewers @ Reds (5:40 pm CDT) - TBD vs. RHP Hunter Greene Thursday, 4/11 - Brewers @ Reds (12:10 pm CDT) - RHP Freddy Peralta vs. RHP Nick Martinez Friday, 4/12 - Brewers @ Orioles (6:05 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Saturday, 4/13 - Brewers @ Orioles (3:05 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Sunday, 4/14 - Brewers @ Orioles (12:35 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD View full article

TBD

Breakdown It was about as good a start as you could draw up. With three road wins to begin the season and good performances across the roster, the Brewers have started 3-0 for the first time since 2018. Despite the delay to Opening Day, the tone was set by Freddy Peralta on Friday, where the newly minted Brewers ace pitched six innings of one run, one hit ball in the Brewers 3-1 victory over the Mets. The offense then generated 16 hits on Saturday, backing up a spotty performance from Brewers starter DL Hall and the bullpen in game two's 7-6 win. Perhaps the most notable event of the weekend was a slide play at second base involving Rhys Hoskins and Mets 2B Jeff McNeil. That slide caused the benches to clear in Friday’s game and the subsequent ejection of Mets pitcher Yohan Ramirez after he threw at Hoskins late in Saturday's game. On Sunday, starter Colin Rea set the tone, throwing five innings of one-run ball, before the bullpen combination of Bryan Hudson and Joel Payamps tossed four scoreless to finish the sweep of the Mets 4-1. The Brewers' offense has generated 33 hits, ten walks, and eight stolen bases through three games. They’ve also hit two home runs and struck out 29 times as a team. The pitching staff is off to arguably a better start, with an ERA of 2.47 and a 0.96 WHIP. Highlights Brice Turang continues to dazzle with both the glove and his speed. He’s the first Brewer to steal more than three bases in the first three games of the season in franchise history. Christian Yelich was the first Brewers to gather at least five hits in the first two games of a season since Lorenzo Cain. He also hit the first Brewers homer of the season and finished the first series with a slash line of .455/.538/.727. He even recorded an outfield assist, throwing out Harison Bader at second base during Saturday's game. Jackson Chourio was the first major league player to debut was born in the year 2004. In his first three games, he showed why he was one of the top prospects in the game, turning in highlights with his bat, glove, and speed. Bryan Hudson waited until Sunday to make his season debut but made the most of his first opportunity on the young season. The left-hander entered the game in relief of starter Colin Rea, pitching three scoreless innings, recording four strikeouts, and surrendering only two hits. Oliver Dunn's debut was lost behind the noise of Chourio’s, but the rookie was impressive in his first series, too. Dunn collected his first big league hit and RBI on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and he played a great defensive third base. Joel Payamps and Abner Uribe covered well for the injured Devin Williams in the relief department, converting three saves in three opportunities. Other Tidbits: There are currently six qualified Brewers with an OPS over .850. The Brewers have stolen eight bases in three games. No runner was caught stealing. The Brewers' pitching staff ended the week with a 2.47 ERA, allowing only six walks and recording 23 strikeouts. However, they did surrender four home runs. 3 Stars of the Week 3rd Star - Brice Turang (.455/.455/.545, 4 SB) 2nd Star - Freddy Peralta (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 8K) 1st Star - Christian Yelich (.455/.538/.727, 2 RBI, HR, 2 SB) Looking Forward Tuesday, 4/02 - Twins @ Brewers (3:10 pm CDT) - RHP Louie Varland vs. RHP Jakob Junis Wednesday, 4/03 - Twins @ Brewers (12:10 pm CDT) - RHP Chris Paddack vs. RHP Joe Ross Friday, 4/05 - Mariners @ Brewers (7:10 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Saturday, 4/06 - Mariners @ Brewers (6:10 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD Sunday, 4/07 - Mariners @ Brewers (1:10 pm CDT) - TBD vs. TBD View full article

  23. For a first year in the major leagues, Brice Turang’s 2023 campaign was largely forgettable. His 62 OPS+ was last among all qualified Brewers, while his .585 OPS was only behind Tim Anderson for worst among big-league hitters with at least 400 plate appearances. Even a 15-game stint in Triple-A in the middle of the season only briefly jumpstarted his offensive production, as Turang hit .259/.362/.398 from late June through early August but a moribund .200/.255/.208 the rest of the way. Analytically, Turang fared worse than ever down the stretch. His quality of contact metrics were among the worst in baseball, while his plate discipline metrics were only average. Even Truang’s calling card (plus defense on the middle infield) was only slightly above average by Outs Above Average. What’s even more shocking was Turang’s consistency. No matter the location, time of day, or handedness of the pitcher, Turang was well below the average major-league hitter. Now, as the 2024 season begins the roll around, it feels like Turang is on the outside looking in. The acquisition of Joey Ortiz, the emergence of Tyler Black, and the potential shift to the infield for Sal Frelick do not bode well for Turang. Even Christian Arroyo, Oliver Dunn, and Andruw Monasterio have an outside shot at being the Brewers' second basemen. The position still might be Turang’s to lose, but as it stands, that’s just barely the case. But Turang is by no means a lost cause. With a few changes, Turang can morph into a league-average hitter--something the Brewers will gladly take with his defense. Perhaps Turang’s biggest struggle last year was with the fastball. Over 50 percent of the pitches Turang saw last year were fastballs. Yet, Turang produced similar contact numbers on fastballs as he did both offspeed and breaking pitches. His -17 run value and 34.0% hard-hit rate on four-seam fastballs made him easy for opposing pitchers to attack, particularly getting to two strikes on Turang. Strikeouts weren’t a problem for Turang, overall (21 K%), but weak contact was. Across the board, pitchers produced weaker contact when batters had two strikes, and Turang’s vulnerability to fastballs helped pitchers get there. Another jarring weakness of Turang’s game last year was left-handed pitching. He hit just .188/278/.188 over 73 plate appearances against southpaws. Compare that to his .224/.287/.321 slash line against righties, nothing might stand out at an initial glance. It isn’t uncommon for lefties like Turang to hit poorly against left-handed pitching. But it is weird, considering Turang actually hit better against left-handers in his last full season in the minor leagues. Even on his minor-league stint in 2023, Turang found little success against left-handed pitching, producing just a .472 OPS against that inferior competition. That was a far cry from the .782 OPS he produced in his last full season in the minors. His struggles could simply be attributed to a small sample size, but if Turang can recapture the success against lefties from 2022 in his sophomore campaign, he’ll have found another way to earn playing time. Turang's Triple-A Platoon Splits in 2022 Brice Turang can run. A 70 scouting grade speed and 95th-percentile sprint speed are proof of that. Turang made good use of his speed last year, swiping 26 bags on 30 attempts and making a handful of dazzling plays on defense. Why not lean into the speed more? Turang's power profile was considered limited even as a prospect. Perhaps a shortened swing, more frequent drag bunting, and a higher early-count swing rate could allow Turang to rely on his legs more than his bat. Turang uses his speed to generate a run UGpsanlfWGw0TUFRPT1fVkFKVUJWMVNBbEVBV2dFS1VRQUFBUTRFQUFNQkFsWUFCbE1HQWxVQ1VGRlJVd0Jm.mp4 The biggest problem for Turang will be making the right adjustment. He doesn’t need a mechanical overhaul like Joey Wiemer, but he doesn’t have the fundamental base of someone like Christian Yelich. Spring training is an excellent time to try something new, but Turang is also fighting for a spot on the team. What is certain is that Turang is someone to watch this spring, because he might not be as far from a fuller realization of his potential as it may seem.
  24. The NL Central has been in a constant state of flux, with experts and fans alike having trouble picking a winner of the division for the past handful of years. No one has repeated as the division winner since the Cubs in 2017, so a Brewers repeat is anything but guaranteed. As it stands now, every team in the Central has a chance to dethrone Milwaukee, but perhaps no team has a better chance than the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds had an interesting 2023 campaign. They got off to a slow start, before enjoying a red-hot June and July, then cooling off down the stretch. They enjoyed breakout seasons from T.J. Friedl, Matt McLain, and Spencer Steer, and had an electrifying debut from then-top prospect Elly De La Cruz that made Cincinnati the hottest baseball town in America for two summer months. They struggled to find reliable starting pitching and consistent bullpen work, despite good seasons from closer Alexis Diaz and starter Andrew Abbott. Notably, the Reds struggled to beat the Brewers last year, ending with a 3-10 record against Milwaukee. They would finish the season 82-80, but are undoubtedly aiming for a higher win total this year. So that begs the question: Where will Cincinnati's improvement come from? Offseason Additions The Reds haven’t made the big splash some expected, but they have added to a weak pitching staff with some proven major leaguers. They first padded their bullpen by adding pitchers Emilio Pagan (2.99 ERA in 69 1/3 IP in 2023) and Nick Martinez (3.43 ERA in 110 1/3 IP), both of whom found success in their roles last year. They also added veteran starter Frankie Montas, who only pitched a third of an inning last year, but did finish sixth in the Cy Young voting as recently as 2021. Perhaps their biggest splash was signing infielder Jeimer Candelario to a three-year, $45-million contract after his breakout season in 2023, wherein he slashed .251/.336/.471 with the Nationals and Cubs. In total, the Reds have committed $105.25 million to their roster for 2024, a number nearly $10 million higher than the Brewers' projected payroll. By adding Pagán and Martinez, the Reds are aiming to find some consistency behind their star closer, Díaz, and with the addition of Montas they are hoping for a dependable back-end rotation arm, with a high ceiling. The signing of Candelario, while expensive, raises their offensive ceiling, and gives the team flexibility within their infield, as Candelario can play both third and first base. To hear the team tell it, they're essentially done making other major additions. Better Health and Internal Improvements There was no player the Reds missed more last year than Hunter Greene, who pitched in only 112 innings due to a hip injury. Despite never putting together an above-average season, Greene's raw pitching talent is Cy Young-caliber. The Reds expect Greene to be their ace, and a fully healthy season will be the first step in that process. Their other starters battled injuries, as they had no pitcher eclipse 150 innings, and only four got past the century mark in innings. The additions of Montas, Pagán, and Martinez will take some of the workload off the depth-challenged 2023 pitching staff, so the team should be able to find more consistency in 2024. The Reds will also count on the further development of their young stars, specifically De La Cruz, who has obvious All-Star potential. Bounce-back seasons from Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson could make a difference for them. Players like Will Benson and Noelvi Marte will benefit from more playing time next year, too, while McLain, Steer, and Friedl will aim to continue to build on their impressive 2023 campaigns. Obviously, they'll need the largest improvements is in starting pitching. Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and Nick Lodolo will all have to perform better next year, while Montas and Martinez will need to be consistent in their rotation spots, as well. All five men have the talent to form a good rotation, but that remains to be seen. Conclusion The seeds of improvement have already been planted in Cincinnati, but will it be enough to contend for a division title? Simply put, yes. There’s no reason the Reds won’t be in the hunt. They’ve made the most substantial additions in the offseason, and despite losing former MVP Joey Votto, the Reds arguably didn't lose any real value on their roster. Like Milwaukee, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, they have numerous promising young players who will improve as they spend more time in the league. Overall, they might be in the best position to succeed. There’s no other team in the NL Central that has greater potential to improve during the coming season than the Reds. They may have finished 10 games behind Milwaukee, but they’ve done more than enough to help close that gap. With the Cubs still yet to make offseason upgrades to their roster, the Reds might just be that single biggest threat to Milwaukee in the division. Do you believe Cincinnati can seriously challenge the Crew in 2024?
  25. The MLB offseason is far from over, but one of the Brewers' division rivals is rumored to have finished building their team. The question is; are the Reds the biggest threat in the NL Central?
