Despite a week that featured a division clinch, a raucous celebration, a losing record, and an offense performing at their lowest clip of the season, the Brewers ended the week with their signature moment. Image courtesy of © Benny Sieu-Imagn Images Like many Wisconsinites, I spent the first part of my afternoon tuning into a football game. With the Brewers having clinched only a handful of days ago, and subsequently playing tepid baseball, my sports fandom had shifted elsewhere. I felt vindicated with my decision as the MLB app pinged all seven of the runs the Diamondbacks scored in the top of the third, all while the Packers carried a sizable lead into halftime. They would keep the lead throughout the final half, and as sweet as it was to see Malik Willis lead the Packers to their second straight win, flipping my attention over to the Brewers to watch them complete an eight-run comeback was even sweeter. Perhaps it was even the sweetest moment of the season. It's nice to look back into the past from time to time, but looking back recently only offers one thing. That thing of note that happened on the same day the Brewers would earn a 2-1 win over the Phillies. With a Chicago Cubs loss to the Oakland A’s, Milwaukee clinched their sixth postseason appearance in seven years, and their first under Pat Murphy. As exciting as that was, the Brewers followed their celebration by getting smacked around by the Diamondbacks for 30 innings straight. Truly, no worse team to do it. This is a potential Wild Card matchup, after the Brewers' postseason was abruptly terminated by the same team a year ago. That only made it better, though, when the Crew turned the tables. Baseball is a game of timing. Not one person plays at a consistent rate throughout the 162-game season, and teams certainly don’t, either. Thus, despite clinching a postseason berth and division title less than a week ago, you could sense the dread surrounding the team. Would another year of slow play heading into the playoffs doom them to another first-round exit? Funny how six innings of baseball can make you feel the opposite way. Sometimes, it really is what have you done for me lately? Like the first three games, the first three innings were all Diamondbacks. Frankie Montas would be tagged for eight runs in his start, four of them on three home runs. As Josh Bell and Eugenio Suárez trotted around the bases, boos rained down at American Family Field. Down 8-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Brewers were faced with one of their largest early deficits on the season. With the offense slumping at a season-worst rate, the mood reached an all-time low, as well. The comeback seemed not just improbable, but impossible--to everyone but the team, apparently. Just six innings and a little more than two hours later, the mood has never been more ebullient. Big hits from Rhys Hoskins, Garrett Mitchell, Jackson Chourio, and more cut the lead down. The bullpen turned in a fantastic effort to keep the game within reach. Devin Williams slammed the door. This is what the Brewers have done for you lately. Here are some of the highlights from the team's largest comeback since 2004: The Bullpen, which limited the Diamondbacks to just 1 run after the third inning: Aaron Ashby (1.1 IP, 4K, 0 ER) Joey Payamps (1.0 IP, 2K, 0 ER) DL Hall (2.0 IP, 3K, 0 ER) Jared Koenig (1.0 IP, K, ER) Devin Williams (1,0 IP, 2K, 0 ER, SV) Joey Ortiz's run-saving play would end up making a major difference. Rhys Hoskins ties the game: Jake Bauers gives the Brewers the lead: Devin Williams earns the save: Somehow, someway, not too shabby of a Sunday for Wisconsin sports fans eh? The Brewers have to find a way to manage and balance the vibes for one more week; the stakes ratchet way, way up after that. View full article

The Brewers played yet another week of successful baseball. Here's a recap if you missed any of the past week's action. Weekly Snapshot Record Last Week: 5-2 (72-52) Runs Scored: 24 Runs Surrendered: 24 Standing: 1st NL Central (10.5 GA) *** Game 118 | LAD 5, MIL 2 Game 119 | LAD 7, MIL 2 Game 120 | MIL 5, LAD 4 Game 121 | MIL 6, LAD 4 Game 122 | MIL 5, CLE 3 Game 123 | MIL 2, CLE 1 Game 124 | MIL 2, CLE 0 *** Transactions 08/12/24 - Placed CF Blake Perkins on the 10-day injured list. Breakdown It might not have initially looked like it, but the Brewers found a path to another good week of baseball. After dropping the first two games to the Dodgers, the Brewers would take advantage of some poor play and win the next two games to earn a split. The AL Central leaders would prove to be less of an issue in the weekend series, with the Brewers completing a sweep behind their pitching staff against the Guardians. At the end of the week, the Brewers have the largest division lead in baseball, are a season-high twenty games over .500, and find themselves in tight contention for an opening-round bye. Not bad, to say the least. Highlights William Contreras is starting to find the swing he had earlier in the season. Win number 70 capped off with this grab from Sal Frelick. The king of the three-run homer does it again. Devin Williams is back and nasty as ever. They'd leave Braves country having put up at least 16 hits in all three games and a three-game win streak. Breakdown It's been an interesting stretch of games for the Brewers since the All-Star break. You can't really call the team hot or cold, but luckily, you can't say that about many teams in baseball. Even the Dodgers and Phillies, the current top two teams in the National League, have been mediocre at best as of late. So, despite middling results from the Crew, the Brewers sat only three games back of the Phillies for the first overall seed going into play Sunday. As for last week, the Brewers began the week in Milwaukee against Atlanta. The Brewers would win the first game 8-3 behind Colin Rea, boosted by homers from Willy Adames, Rhys Hoskins, and Jackson Chourio. However, neither the offense nor the pitching staff could get much going in games two and three, allowing the Braves to capture the series. A trip to the nation's capital would follow, with the Brewers again starting the series with an 8-3 victory, this time behind the newly acquired Frankie Montas. A rough first inning would sink Aaron Civale and the Brewers in game two, dropping the game 6-4 to set up a rubber match. The Nationals would jump out to an early 4-0 lead despite an effective start from Tobias Myers, and the Brewers' late comeback effort would fall short, losing 4-3. After winning the first game in both of their series last week, the Brewers would drop the final two each time. Here's a recap if you missed the action. Highlights Rhys Hoskins' recent power surge has him atop the team leaderboard in home runs. William Contreras got a hold of this one. Maybe the most casual robbery you'll ever see. Breakdown The Brewers resumed play after the break with a two-game series in Minnesota. Game one of that series would see a twelve-inning thriller, with the Brewers putting away the Twins 8-4. Game two would see the Brewers' only offensive surge as of late. Eric Hasse would hit two homers, and Jackson Chourio would add a big fly and 3 RBIs in an 8-7 win. Milwaukee would follow up with a series win over Chicago next. It was a series more pitching-oriented than anything, with the Brewers being the teams coming up with the late hits. Milwaukee does not play the Cubs for the rest of the regular season. It wasn't just sweet victory for the Brewers though. The Marlins came to town and took two games to end the week. Both the pitching and offense struggled, with Freddy Peralta, Jared Koenig, and Elvis Peguero all failing to be effective. Perhaps a little bit of magic from a old friend got the Brewers back on the right track Sunday, as Milwaukee would win the series finale with Ryan Braun in town for his induction into the Walk of Fame. It's been a interesting stretch of days since the All-Star break. As that week's festivites ended, the teams within the league started to get ready for the trade deadline. Milwaukee swung their first trade of deadline season with the Rockies on Saturday, while other NL Central teams like the Cubs have been active over the weekend as well. And despite the struggles and success of the team on the field, the largest story was Christian Yelich reaggravating his injured back. It's unknown how long, or even if Yelich will be back in the season. Suddenly the Brewers luxury of shopping an extra outfielder might turn into shopping for another one. Of course, if you're looking for Brewers deadline coverage, there's no better than right here at Brewer Fanatic. Highlights How about Jackson Chourio starting to heat up? See the caption. Turang can do it with the bat too. Eric Hasse has done nothing but hit since being called up. The Brewers played one of their worst weeks on baseball last week, but the good news is the All-Star break is already upon us. Here's a brief recap is you missed the action. Breakdown To say the Brewers coasted to the All-Star break would be an understatement. There were blown leads and saves, a lack of timely hitting, and inconsistent starting pitching. That may come down to nagging injuries or come down to just having a bad week, but either way, Pat Murphy's team is probably happy for a few days off next week. Perhaps the lowlight of the week was getting no-hit through seven by Paul Skenes and the Pirates, but at least the team ended on a high by avoiding a sweep in the final game before the break. Some of the hotter bats have gone cold, and players like Joey Ortiz can’t seem to shake the nagging injuries bothering them. The pitching staff has been stretched incredibly thin, with emergency signing Dallas Keuchel earning multiple starts. The week started in Colorado, where the Brewers earned a series split. All four games were close, with Brewers manager Pat Murphy going on record to say like they felt like they could’ve won all four. The highlight of the series was Colin Rea, who twirled seven scoreless innings in one of the two victories. The series in Los Angeles wouldn’t fare better. Again, the Brewers bullpen would continue to struggle uncharacteristically, and they’d lose the first two games late. Breakdown The Brewers started off their week facing the Blue Jays at home. Starter Colin Rea turned in his best start of the season, throwing seven innings of one-run ball. Backed by Joel Payamps and Trevor Megill in the bullpen, the Brewers would win game one 3-1. Game two saw the Blue Jays staff, led by starter Yusei Kikuchi, shut down the Brewers' offense in a 3-0 shutout. The rubber match was started by Tobias Myers, who was looking for an encore after his previous start in Detroit. He would deliver on the promise, hurling six innings of one-run baseball. The Brewers would add a five-run sixth inning, and Trevor Megill would survive a late offensive surge in the 9th, with the final being 6-5. Cincinnati would come to town after a day off Thursday. Game one would see Freddy Peralta toe the slab, but his struggles would continue, surrendering 10 hits and six runs. The contest would see the Brewers lose in heartbreaking fashion, with their late comeback ending with Blake Perkins popping out on a bunt for the final out after Jake Bauers was thrown out as the tying run at home. Milwaukee would rebound in game two behind opener Jared Koenig and pseudo-starter Byrse Wilson. Joey Ortiz would hit a three-run homer, and Trevor Megill would labor through another 9th inning, allowing Milwaukee to set up a rubber match after a 3-1 victory. Sunday’s contest saw the Brewers capture their 8th straight series victory over the Reds, backed by Willy Adames' go-ahead three-run homer and Blake Perkins' defensive heroics in the 9th inning. Highlights Joey Ortiz provided all the offense the Brewers needed on Saturday. It’s the time of the year when trade talks are just starting to heat up. With a few teams already looking to be bottoming out, one certain NL West team may catch the Brewers' attention. Image courtesy of © Tim Vizer-USA TODAY Sports To no one's surprise, the Colorado Rockies aren’t off to the best start in 2024. Already more than 10 games back from the Dodgers and more than five games back from fourth place, there’s little doubt Colorado will be looking to sell again. Rockies GM Bill Schmidt has already shown to be more creative than his predecessor when it comes to trades, and has been vocal about committing to the rebuild process. So what does a team as lousy as the Rockies have to offer? More than you’d think, but nothing that’ll completely flip a team around. Luckily, the Brewers are going to be an already-good team looking to bolster themselves at the edges. Charlie Blackmon Current Contract: 1 year, $13 Million It has long since made sense for the Rockies to move on from their longest-tenured player. Blackmon is at the tail end of his career. He's playing on a one-year contract he signed in the last offseason, and might be looking to play for a contender. He could always choose to return to the Rockies in the offseason, or he could choose to call it a career at that point. Do the Brewers need a player who’s primarily a DH? No. Should the Rockies even trade Blackmon? Based on principle, also no. Ideally, Blackmon retires soon, and the Rockies retire his number soon after. They've held on to him this long. There will be rumors about any veteran bat on a bad team with name value attached to them, but Blackmon is someone you can skip over in your mind. Chance: As close to Zero as imaginable Jake Cave Current Contract: 1 year, $1 Million In a similar vein to Blackmon, Jake Cave would serve as a backup outfielder or primary DH. His numbers aren’t flattering, even before you consider the Coors Field factor, so picking up Cave would likely come at a minimal cost. Cave will probably be shopped this month and next, but he might well not end up moving. If he is moved, it won’t be to the Brewers. Garrett Mitchell is already slated to return to a jammed outfield picture, and Jake Cave would likely be nothing more than Triple-A depth in Milwaukee. Chance: As close to Zero as imaginable Jalen Beeks Current Contract: 1 year, $1.675 Million Beeks is an impending free agent. The left-handed reliever has put up middling numbers in his past two seasons, but found success in the past as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. Beeks has some solid underlying metrics (despite pitching in Colorado), too. Left-handed relievers are a hot commodity every deadline, but Beeks still might fly under the radar. With unpretty numbers, his price shouldn’t be too high, and trading for a Rockies reliever is always an inherent risk. Sounds like a perfect Brewers target. Chance: Reasonable Dakota Hudson Current Contract: 1 year, $1.5 million Hudson is probably familiar to Brewers fans through his time as a St. Louis Cardinal. The Rockies took a one-year flier on him, but despite a hot start, he's now turning in career-worst numbers. You could attribute that to the altitude, but command has been an issue. Hudson has walked the most batters in baseball this year, and his WHIP (over 1.50) reflects it. Not to sound like a broken record, but Hudson isn’t going to fetch much of a return price. Starting pitching for the Brewers is incredibly thin, so taking a chance on Hudson doesn’t seem too insane. They can make guys work in a way the Rockies can't. Chance: Reasonable Cal Quantrill Current Contract: 1 year, $6.55 million (1 year of Arbitration left) Quantrill is in his first year as a Rockie and has adapted well to pitching at altitude, bouncing back from a career-worst season in 2023. He comes with an extra year of control relative to rental arms, so Colorado may not be looking to part with the former Guardian. The asking price could vary. Pitchers who adjust well to the altitude in Colorado as quickly as Qunatrill are rare, and the Rockies could very well be looking at keeping him around. If they are shopping Quantrill with that in mind, his price will be high. If he’s just another arm, Quantrill could be a steal. Chance: Slight Ryan McMahon Contract: 6 years, $70 million (4 years, $56 million left) Undoubtedly, McMahon is the most valuable trade asset the Rockies have. Trade rumors have been swirling around the third baseman for years, but the Rockies decided to lock up what they thought was the next Trevor Story or Nolan Arenado in 2022. He’s delivered on that thought so far, getting off to a fantastic start in 2024. The price will be high. Multiple top prospects would have to be headed back to Colorado. If teams wanted the Rockies to pay some of McMahon’s contract, the player pool would have to richen. If Colorado does move McMahon, don’t expect it to be to Milwaukee. Joey Ortiz has been as good, if not better than McMahon this season. Rostering another third baseman creates an obvious problem. The bigger problem will be the price. McMahon has been linked to teams like the Yankees, and that’s a bidding war Milwaukee shouldn’t even take part in. Chance: Very Slim, even if Colorado answers the phone Austin Gomber Contract: 1 year, $3.15 million (1 year of Arbitration left) Gomber is probably most famous for being the return piece in the Nolan Arenado trade. Gomber is having arguably a career year, and with one year of control remaining trade value is as high as it’s been since the aforementioned trade. It’s hard to say what the market for Gomber will look like. The Rockies would certainly be selling high, but teams might be looking to buy low. The overall interest in Gomber is largely unknown, with players like McMahon dominating trade rumors and talks. It’s not impossible for the Brewers to snag a guy like Gomber, if it falls into their lap. Chance: Reasonable-ish Overall It’s not likely that the Brewers hook up with the Rockies for a deal, but it isn’t impossible, either. The position-player group in Colorado doesn’t match the Brewers' needs, and pitching from Colorado always comes with a risk. The deadline is unpredictable, but don’t expect anything coming from Colorado unless it comes together at the last minute. View full article
