  1. If Cap Anson and Ty Cobb can be in the Hall, I see no reason why Pete Rose should be barred. Heck, Anson was the ringleader and instigator in the push for creating a color barrier. Who was really a greater detriment to the game, him or Rose?
  2. I hadn't authored a thread in months. Why not make it 2 in a row? http://sports.espn.go.com...go/news/story?id=4361812
  3. Didn't see this anywhere else. A real solid move for the Giants if you ask me. There is no less of a sure thing than a starting pitcher in the low minors, even if he is a swell prospect. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4360099
  4. For my 2000th post, all I'll say is.. I've been to 2 playoff games, watched a stadium's attendance go from depleted to full, seen more .500 or better seasons the last 4 years than in the previous 15 combined, gotten to witness the arrival of one of the best all around hitters (Braun) and the best power hitter (Fielder) in team history, watched the days of the Brewers getting one obligatory all-star selection come to the end, witnessed consistent playoff contention after the all-star break, and it is all happening in a market that no one wants to play in. I want to be clear: I am frustrated with what is going on with the Crew at the moment. However, the "what have you done for me lately" mentality is not where my thought lie. We've hit a bump in the road, he is aware of it, and I'm willing to watch how he goes about dealing with it. I have an extreme fear that a new G.M always has the potential of leading a small market franchise back into the Bando doldrums. I don't think Melvin will do that.
  5. How in the heck have Bill and Brian been unable to recall Tatis yet???? EDIT: Finally.
  6. Watching Willingham go all Fernando Tatis on us is definitely the low point in the season thus far for me.
  7. If I may be pedantic for a moment... Bats sleep during the day because they are nocturnal creatures. Hibernation is a metabolic process that animals use to conserve energy during periods of time when food is in short supply (e.g., winter). So while many bats do hibernate, it's not at all related to their nocturnal lifestyle. I'm glad I didn't continue on because I was going to refer to bats as birds, Moby Dick as a fish, peanuts as nuts, and was going to use the word "literally" in a hyperbolic nature.
  8. Didn't see the induction speeches, but what was the over/under for the number of times Ricky Henderson refers to himself in the third person?
  9. Exactly. I live at Ground Zero here in Texas (sans Mexico) and there is pretty much zero concern. Every year or two there seems to be some "get scared" medical buzzword. I think driving on our highways is much more threatening to our mortality.
  10. Isn't this a double-edged sword situation? So many people have bemoaned that we A.) Don't have the starting pitching to make the post season and B.) We are wearing out our bullpen with too many short starts. No one but Yo has demonstrated the ability to pitch deep into ballgames, so don't you kind of have to rely on your ace to do that? Stetter, Coffey, and CV have all thrown in 40+ games, Difelice is at 39, we know Trevor doesn't have the ability to pitch more than 2 games in a row, McClung is struggling, and Chris Smith is garbage time U.S.A. What can you do? Guarantee that your bullpen will have to throw at least 3 innings every game? I just don't see that as a formula for success. If Yo has confidence that he can go (and let's face it, Yo would have more to lose personally and financially in the future than anyone if he claimed he was fine when he wasn't. As far as personal interest goes, there is no reason for him to do it), what other options do we really have?
  11. Bats hibernate during the day because they are nocturnal creatures. Much of the reason for this is that predators who feed on bats are usually not nocturnal, giving a pragmatism to the absence of bats during the day.
  12. As long as our dominance over the Pirates continues over the next few days, I'll wait until Thursday to fret over our mediocrity. But seriously, we should be much better than mediocre against the Nationals, D-Backs, Padres, and hopefully Reds/stros over the next two months.
  13. Amen Topper. You said what I wanted to say, but much more eloquently.
  14. I won't address the rest of your post because it's your opinion (though I don't quite get why people get offended and shout that something is "condescending" if they don't agree with it). However, I saw multiple times, reports on the tee-shirt A-Rod's wife wore to games and plenty of press on his relationship with Madonna. Heck, I also know that Derek Jeter has been dating Kate Hudson. Why do I know these things? ESPN.
  15. I know Kendall got a hit off Coco the other day, but is it complete heresy to pinch hit for him?
  16. Great. We send Kendall, pinch hitter, and Counsell up against Cordero. I'll hope for the best, but that pitch was begging to be hit out.
  17. That's fine. They're a business and they want profits. But that doesn't mean I have to watch it. It's not even about what teams they cover (bias or whatever). It's that I like X's and O's and the history of sports. I don't care about who A-Rod's dating. I don't care about "who's now". I don't care about Lebron James' reaction after losing to the Magic. I don't care if Barry Bonds' mistress wants to write a book. I don't really care about Mike and Mike's half hour conversation about "whether it's okay for a man to cry if he gets stung by a bee." 9 out of 10 baseball fans can't tell you how arbitration works. I've never heard ESPN try to explain it. Why not? ESPN has become People Magazine for men. I do like their college football coverage, but in the summer the MLB network is well worth the money. They actually try to inform you about baseball. Instead of "Who's Now," how about you profile a different past Cy Young winner each day? Or twenty days of the top 20 rushers of a all time? If that would make the ratings drop and is therefore a "no-no" then ESPN and I have irreconcilable differences.
  18. For me, it was when ESPN did that reoccurring "Who's NOW" segment that I bowed out. Debating who is the hottest (most Popular???) athlete of today is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. And they did it with straight faces.
  19. It would have been nice to re-sign Kapler. The Brewers got kind of spoiled with their outfield bench, having Gross and Kapler the last few years. Where is Geoff Jenkins?
  20. Go bald. Trust me, it's cheaper.
  21. Now the greatest showing by a Brewer in a derby is no longer by Burnitz. A great night and really fun to watch.
