The Brewers are averaging 4.3 runs per game this year. Last year they averaged 4.6.This seems very puzzling. Then again, we aren't even halfway through the season, so I would assume that total for the year will go up a bit. Perhaps a lack of multi-run home runs is to blame? Other than McGehee at 3B, there isn't a position on the field that is greatly under performing last year's numbers from what I can gather (Yuni is basically a wash compared to Escobar's numbers).
The thing with Green is that he probably would be a defensive upgrade over McGehee, but I'm really hesitant to say his offense in the majors would be better. As far as Gindl, I have no idea how he would get much playing time right now with the five OFs currently on the MLB roster.
I think it's much more likely that the NL will adopt the DH than to drop it. Such a move will be driven by the high investments teams make in starting pitchers these days.
I asked Jim Breen (Bernie's Crew) about Green's defense yesterday. Here's what he said: I see an average defender w/ decent, but unspectacular actions. Have talked to a couple scouts who see it more fringe-average.
They need to do something. It's beyond stupid that they've had one six team division and one four team division for this long. Contraction and expansion are not happening, so going to two 15 team leagues seems the most sensible option. I personally enjoy interleague play and want to see the playoffs expanded, so I'm in favor of this.
I will admit I haven't found his defense to be as horrible as we were lead to believe. That said, he is still bad with the glove and almost an automatic out with the bat. He has earned minimal playing time and should be replaced if at all possible. I am sure Melvin knows this and will be scouring for trades, if he isn't all ready.
Really shortstop should be a Counsell/Wilson platoon at this point. Betancourt should be sent down to AAA if he has any options left, or just DFAed. He doesn't show any signs of being competent at the plate while at least Counsell and Wilson seem to be having quality ABs.
No kidding. I don't know if Melvin is just sitting on his hands or what. It's time to do something about the horrible production of the bottom half of the order.
I really don't get why Melvin is still dinking around with Nieves on the big league roster. Kottaras is killing the ball and our bottom lineup is terrible whenever Nieves is in. Has he ever finished a game when he has started? It seems like Lucroy always ends up pinch hitting for him anyway. The answer is so simple, but the Brewers seem to be intentionally obstinate about it.
Kottaras is just killing the ball in AAA. I know that doesn't necessarily translate to big leauge success, but I don't know how Doug Melvin isn't doing something to boost our bottom of the order production. When you have Nieves in the order, you have about four automatic outs at the bottom of the order.
Roenicked pretty much agreed with the "Braun and Prince can't carry this team alone" assessment in his post game comments. “We can’t depend on ‘Braunie’ and Prince all the time to be driving in all the runs. We need to spread that out. Everybody is a big part of how we grow offensively. You’re never going to be that great offensive team if you’re only looking at three or four guys in your lineup.”
I really don't get why Lucroy can't bat fifth, or at least sixth, at this point. He's clearly one of the best hitters on this team right now. I just see him batting 7th in the order as an unnecessary luxury at this time.
We would've gushed over him, but ESPN would have barely mentioned him. I guess I was more annoyed by the ESPN pro-Yankees bias in their hyping of Joba more than anything.
Joba Chamberlain may be headed for Tommy John surgery. So much for him being the Yankees' pitcher of the future. One of the biggest over-hype jobs by ESPN in recent memory.
Matsui might be interesting if the cost is low enough. I don't know why he has stunk this year after hitting so well last year. Then again, he's 37. I think Posada is basically done. He isn't really a catcher anymore, and if he can't hit, his value is pretty much non-existent.
This made me laugh. To be fair to Beane, they have bad ownership, a bad stadium, and bad attendance. Hard to make things work in such a market. However, he's been GM there a long time, and you would think the rope would run out at some point.
I don't live in Milwaukee, but I would think it's much more sensible to try and keep the Bucks long term than to try to attract an MLS or NHL team (the latter won't happen anyway due to objections from the Chicago Blackhawks).
This. He clearly enjoys being around high caliber players like Braun, Fielder, Hart, etc. I think most of his "attitude" problems last year were due to how terrible the Nats were. It must be quite refreshing to be on a team that's near the top of the standings instead of trawling at the bottom.
