  1. I guess I think people are being a bit naive, to put it bluntly. If Prince really wanted to stay, he would have signed an extension by now. The Brewers have tried to re-sign him two or three times already, and Scott Boras is his agent. No amount of camaraderie with teammates or playoff magic is going to make him take a hometown discount at this point. Maybe I am a bit jaded, but people were saying the same things about C.C. Sabathia after the Wild Card run in '08. Let's not let ourselves get burned emotionally again. I'm going to enjoy watching Prince put up monster numbers this year. Hopefully he leads us to the World Series. After that, I'll be fine with seeing him go to another team and netting the Brewers a couple compensation draft picks (as long as he doesn't sign with the Cubs). I'm more comfortable with that than tying up a fifth of our payroll in a first baseman.
  2. I heard some of Roenicke's comments after the game last night. Tom Haudricourt asked him why he left Loe in to give up five runs. Roenicke's response started with, "What do you mean?" He then went on to talk about only having a few pitchers available, but then he was very effusive about how he thinks Loe is a great pitcher, etc. I think he is enamored with Loe and thinks he's an elite setup man.
  3. One or two good drafts can go a ways toward restocking the system. It shouldn't take 7-8 years if Seid and company have any competence at drafting. Time will tell. This thread is ignoring that we have Mat Gamel waiting in the wings, and the possibility of re-signing one or both of Marcum and Greinke. I would rather spend Fielder's potential salary on a couple great pitchers, or one great pitcher and one FA shorstop (as an example).
  4. Lawrie has fractured left hand, out 3-4 weeks.
  5. I think Kameron Loe begs to differ after last night. For the most part I've been fine with Roenicke, but that was a real head scratcher last night.
  6. It's not a matter of can we, it's "should we". I don't think committing 7-8 years to Prince is really wise, as great as he is.
  7. Technically, Jenkins only had one All-Star appearance in 2003. Still, he was definitely not a disappointment as a draft pick.
  8. I see Roenicke has Casey batting sixth tonight. I doubt being lower in the batting order is suddenly going to cause a turn around for him, but I'm glad he won't be batting fifth for now. I agree with Briggs that it looks like his swing has changed. Casey used to have such a nice compact swing, and you don't really see it this year.
  9. I think all Briggs meant was that he hasn't been costing the team games like many seemed to say he would. That may just point to how good the rest of the team is, though.
  10. Reyes is a pipe dream...we just don't have the pieces to get it done, in my opinion. Honestly, Betancourt, while bad, isn't horribly detrimental to the team like many expected.
  11. I can recall Kruk saying positive things about the Brewers as well. A lot of pundits in general were saying the team would fall short this season, IIRC, though.
  12. Yeah, he's had a rep for having an attitude for a long time now. The Nats should have someone give him a long "come to Jesus" type moment if they don't want headaches with him once he reaches the majors.
  13. Well, I'd say that was a pretty nice road trip. 1.5 games behind the Cards.
  14. Yeah, I don't get why Roenicke didn't go out and argue that one.
  15. Yeah, no reason for him to not be moved down at this point. I still think he'll come around, but we need better production in the 5 spot.
  16. This is all hilarious. Thanks for posting this. I was wondering yesterday if the Marlins would really do well long term with the new park. I know they will have the roof, A/C, and be closer to downtown...but I really get the sense that most people there just don't care about MLB that much.
  17. Capuano was well liked during his time as a Brewer, and it's not like he left the team for more money or something. I'm sure he'll get cheered.
  18. Good to know. They haven't had much to "swagger" about for quite a while.
  19. Of course, but unless we have actual evidence, it's just blind speculation. Of instance, the Brewers are currently 402 o this road trip. I think it's because they've been playing a lot more confident lately. I mean, you can see it in their eyes! I think it's because Ron Roenicke learned how to be an elite NL manager after that 7 game losing skid. /blue Seriously though, you can't help but be very pleased with how this team is playing. Hopefully Greinke pitches how he is fully capable tonight and the Brewers end up finishing an outstanding road trip.
  20. The nice thing about the Brewers is I don't see them needing to acquire some huge piece in July to put themselves over the top. Sure, an upgrade at shortstop or maybe 3B (barring a turnaround for Casey) would be nice, but it's not like they need to get an elite guy like a Jose Reyes to hopefully push the team into contention.
  21. It's just amazing they have the gall to criticize other teams for "showboating" when they have probably the biggest home run watcher in all of baseball on their team.
  22. I love the latest Cubs melodrama. Not much more to add...but it shouldn't be this surprising that they stink this year. A bunch of aging position players and mediocre pitching don't make a contender.
  23. This is how I feel. I don't believe Hall would be an upgrade over him at this point.
  24. Dumb question: If the players find the blue uniforms more comfortable, why don't they just make the white and gray ones out of the same material?
  25. I remember there was a "Player X" article in ESPN Magazine that specifically mentioned Hall as a guy that partied too hard once he got his big contract. I actually liked Hall...but the more I think about it, I'd rather just leave him in the past. I don't think he brings much more to the table at this point than guys we already have.
