  1. Yeah, I think acquiring Perez in any trade would be a step backwards at this point. I don't want to see the Brewers on the hook for his salary next season, and we have enough questionable "veteran pitching" at this point. Enough is enough. Ride out this season, and then clear as much salary room (through departing players and possibly trades this season), and make some meaningful acquisitions in the off-season. Wasting salary for next season on a guy like Perez would be way too risky.
  2. Bush "not pleased" about being skipped in next start. "The finger's not an issue," said Bush. "That has nothing to do with it." As for the decision to pitch Manny Parra instead, Bush said, "I'm not pleased about it. "They just said 'You're not starting on Sunday. They were very vague. I don't really know what the situation is. I was told I might just pitch out of the bullpen and get pushed back (in the rotation)."
  3. Could Heether be pulled back or is this an irrevocable waiver type thing?
  4. It was becoming obvious he was never going to get a shot in Milwaukee, so good for him. I just wonder if they'll regret this in the long run. I'm not saying he's going to turn into a star or something, but he seems like he could have been a useful guy to have on the bench.
  5. This is a guy people were calling for to get non-tendered before the season started, or assumed wouldn't be kept after this year. Pretty different from the Pirates trading guys with multiple years of control left, or when they first start to get expensive.
  6. I really doubt Griffey was hanging around these last couple seasons "for money." He made over $150 million in his career (just in contracts, not counting endorsement deals, etc). A couple million more per year with Seattle at the end probably wasn't a big deal to him at this point. If anything he was playing for pride and maybe to pad his career stats a bit.
  7. The cost savings from going from Hardy/Cameron to Escobar/Gomez were pretty huge. Unfortunately, Melvin looks to have whiffed big time in how he spent that extra cash in the off-season.
  8. I'll admit that he has certainly lived up to his arbitration award so far this season, especially after a lousy spring training. Good for him. He's definitely become a bright spot on the Brewers team.
  9. I'm not going to pretend I was a huge fan of his. I didn't like how he left Seattle. Still, there's no denying he was an amazing player, and should be a first ballot Hall of Famer, like others mentioned. I'm glad he's hanging up the cleats now, rather than trying to ride out the season on the bench.
  10. Sounds like Hawkins is going to be gone for quite a while yet (per Haudricourt's reference to Doug Melvin on Twitter), so hopefully Loe and some of these other guys can stick at the MLB level for now.
  11. I'm not ready to completely throw in the towel on the season. Like others have said, there is a lot of baseball left to be played. Turnarounds have happened before to losing teams, and it could happen to the Brewers. That said, do I think hoping for such a change is a good strategy? No. I would hope that Doug Melvin and his advisers would very soon start to look around the league for potential trades that could bolster the team beyond 2010. As far as Hoffman, if he struggles in a couple more outings, I hope he is honest with himself and doesn't try to play out the string this season, just making people reluctantly remember what he once was.
  12. I agree completely. I really hope Melvin and Attanasio are realistic at this point, and decide to shop Prince sooner than later.
  13. Briggs, that's basically what I was getting at. Thanks for summarizing it better than I could. If he has another season like he did in '08 (which he seems to be on pace for), he simply isn't going to be in that A-Rod/Pujols payday range, or even a Joe Mauer one. Maybe not even a Ryan Howard type deal (which I think was seen as a stupid contract by most of baseball). Given his level of play this year, coupled with his body type and defensive shortcomings, and I just don't see anyone ponying up the potentially franchise crippling mega-bucks contract that Fielder and Boras insist he's entitled too.
  14. 5th place in the NL Central? Maybe 4th if the options are explored?
  15. Picking up Bruney is one of those "meh" moves. Doesn't cost much, and if he turns things around, great. If not, you let him leave and move on. Doesn't really bother me either way.
  16. I agree. Anything more than maybe 3 years/$18 million like you said would be unwarranted at this point (and that might even be a little high, looking at that list posted earlier). I know people on this board like Weeks, but I'd hate to see the Brewers give him a 4 year/$24 million contract or something, as some have suggested. He just hasn't earned a payday like that, quite frankly.
  17. Well, I think it's pretty much impossible to blame the pitching coach for how horribly Hoffman, Hawkins, Davis, Wolf, and Bush all have regressed (and aside from the fact that injuries are a factor with some of those guys). When you have all those guys that are red flags, plus Suppan, it becomes a matter beyond the manager and coaching staff. It falls on the general manager.
  18. Yeah, I agree completely. It was a different time then. Wasn't that the same off-season that Zito got his gigantic contract from the Giants?
  19. I guess staying ahead of Mariano Rivera? But Rivera is sitting at 537 saves, and is already 40. Not sure how realistic it will be for him to overtake Hoffman at this point. I also agree with the point earlier that they should take down that banner at Miller Park. They should have done it after he was "demoted" from the closer role and put it back up after he got his next save or two, eventually. At this point, it's just kind of a joke sitting out there.
  20. *bump* I thought this would be worth re-examining. Through yesterday (192 AB's), Prince's slash line: .266/.395/.427/.822, 8 HR, 20 RBI. Is that a bad line? No, of course not. Is it approximate of a player worth a $120-200 million contract? I think not. Yes, maybe he's just having a bit of a down year; but along with the bad defense Prince is bringing this season, I really hope Melvin and Attanasio take a step back and realize that trying to tie down such a huge part of the payroll to such a player is going to be bad business.
  21. That's the thing. Is it really that impressive if it takes him ten opportunities to get four more saves at this point?
  22. Really don't want a guy like this where we're on the hook for next season's salary.
  23. Pretty disappointing outing last night after he had three pretty good ones. Definitely didn't look like he had much on his pitches to me. You have to wonder how much longer the team can trot him out there. Then again, how long have we been saying that about Suppan?
  24. I think TLB hit the nail on the head. They probably just want to give Gomez a needed day off. Yeah, not exciting to see Edmonds in there, but I'd rather see him play than risk Gomez getting overworked.
  25. Interesting to hear, but I don't know if much will come of it.
