  1. In two years Wolf will be in the last year of his contract making "only" $9.5 million. Even if he ends up turning to crap, it shouldn't be crippling. He does have a club option for 2013, but with a $1.5 million buyout (less than Soup's buyout).
  2. Escobar has the tools, he just needs to slow down sometimes. I think he sometimes rushes throws to first instead of taking time to square himself up better. Really, I think it's just typical rookie struggles. He'll get better as he matures as a player.
  3. I've been disappointed in Prince's defense so far this year. It seems like he's regressed since looking pretty good last season.
  4. I don't blame Suppan for taking his money and trying his best (at least he seems to be). The Brewers signed him, coming off a good season, and he has simply regressed with age. It's up to the team to cut ties with a player when he's no longer good. How often do you ever hear of a player retiring or giving back money when they're still under contract? Pretty much never. I can't blame Suppan for that.
  5. I don't think anyone is proclaiming Loe as a long term fixture. We're going to have to wait for a trade or the off-season to see any kind of long term solutions for the rotation.
  6. Yeah, I was hoping they would try that Sunday lineup for another game or two. I think it has potential.
  7. I guess you just beat me to this. Not an exciting option, and not sure if they're going to use him as a starter or reliever at this point. Hopefully he can do well either way, because obviously the Brewers' pitching needs some help at this point. Will be very interesting to see what the corresponding roster move ends up being.
  8. It's a pretty big stretch to say Escobar was "gifted" a spot on the MLB roster. He busted his butt in the minors, played very well at AAA, and also played well at the MLB level during his short stint last season. Not really seeing how that is being gifted a position. A guy like Brewer is frustrating because he obviously has talent, but seemed uninterested in fully utilizing it. I also get tired of hearing about guys in our system having "family issues," or "personal problems." Just seems like a weak excuse. Everyone has family problems at various points in their lives, but it's up to the individual to leave that stuff at the door when they go to work, as they say.
  9. Just announced on Twitter that Capuano will be starting on Thursday, and Parra is going back to the 'pen. Sounds good to me.
  10. I guess it's no longer "Landshark Stadium." Now it's "Sun Life Stadium." Good grief, these name changes have become silly.
  11. I really don't agree with this. At this point, Suppan is clearly hurting the team much more than he is helping (if he has really helped any at all this year). Estrada is a better option than Suppan. I would wager that Tim Dillard, Kameron Loe, or possibly even a couple other AAA/AA guys are better options than Soup at this point. Further, after yesterday, his psyche is probably pretty well shot to pieces. There really is no positive from leaving Suppan on the team at this point. There is no name value, he is not a draw. He may be a "nice guy" in the the community and in the clubhouse, but Bill Hall probably was too and the team is paying him to play for the Red Sox this year. I'm guessing the other relievers are wondering why he keeps getting chances to fail, and the offense probably shudders when he comes in. The Suppan signing was a big move for the franchise at the time, and for the first two seasons of his contract it worked out all right. But by now there is no point to keeping him around. It's not like they're going to exercise his option for next season. We tried him as a reliever (which I was in favor of), and it hasn't worked out. Just cut your losses and move on.
  12. All right, since everyone is talking about this anyway, we may as well have a thread about it. Let's try to keep conversation productive and not rehash stuff over and over again. I think this article from Tom Oates summarizes the situation pretty well: By now, it is a given that the four-year, $42 million contract the Brewers gave him in 2007 was a colossal failure. However, it wasn't until midway through last season, Suppan's third with the Brewers, that he stopped getting hitters out. He was 2-8 after June 12 and pitched his way out of the rotation after only two starts this season. The reason Suppan is still around is painfully obvious to all: The Brewers are unwilling to eat his $12.5 million salary for this season. That could be because they can't afford it or because owner Mark Attanasio has some sort of attachment to Suppan, his first major acquisition. Whatever the reason, Suppan is producing little on the field - Macha will have to think twice about using him in any meaningful situation again - and he's taking up critical roster space on a team that has a depleted bullpen and a short bench. Given the way they booed Suppan Sunday, Brewers fans have clearly seen enough of him. One suspects that Macha has too, though he can't say it publicly. "There's going to be situations pop up when you have that last guy in the bullpen and he's going to have to do it," Macha said. The manager said he had no problem bringing Suppan into a 2-2 game because he had a track record of success against most of the Mets he faced. "I had confidence bringing him in," Macha said. "He just didn't make his pitches. ... All the matchups were in his favor. After (Saturday) night, I'm hoping I get two innings out of Jeff. He should feel confident coming in because he's got a history of getting those guys out." In a way, that makes it worse. If Suppan can no longer get guys out that he once owned, he has probably reached the end of his usefulness to the Brewers. Hey, it's not the first time a pitcher's effectiveness ran out before his contract did.
  13. I've read that's a part of the baseball culture down there.
  14. At the beginning of the year, I could have possibly seen something like this happening, but not guessed Prince Fielder wouldn't be involved. Pretty cool.
  15. Yes, although they're still on the hook for his salary. I'd love to see the Brewers take a look at bringing him in. Couldn't hurt anything at this point.
  16. Having two in one season is just crazy. I was at the game last night and when they announced Halladay had done it, I was cheering pretty hard. Admittedly part of that is because he's on my fantasy team, but it's a pretty amazing accomplishment.
  17. I'm also going, but I have no idea where our seats are (going with friends who have tickets).
  18. Is there any chance at all some desperate team claims him? Would be nice to get some salary relief.
  19. Pretty sensible move. Glad it was done. This blurb on MLB Trade Rumors pretty much sums up the reasoning: In 19.2 innings this season, Vargas has a ERA of 7.32 with 8.2 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9.
  20. Well, supposedly they've been trying to sign Fielder to an extension since Spring Training, and we haven't heard too much about it. My guess is that the deafening silence on the talks means that the two sides are well apart. If they can't get a deal done during the season, I don't see it happening this coming winter. You could be right that they might wait to trade Fielder during this coming off-season. I hope they don't try to make one more run with him next year and then deal him mid-season for a lackluster return, or worse, let him walk in free agency and settle for questionable draft pick compensation.
  21. So you're saying they should DFA Estrada? If not, his performance isn't really relevant to the discussion. It's clear he has more value than Suppan or Vargas at this point, so if you're going to DFA someone, it should be one or both of them.
  22. Agree 100%. I hope last night was a big "light bulb" moment for Gallardo. It was refreshing to see him attack guys and pound the zone instead of nibbling and over using "waste pitches."
  23. Sending Estrada down to AAA doesn't do anything since they need to clear a spot on the 40 man for Capuano. I could see them moving Zaun to the 60 day DL.
  24. We got my wife a new Dell Inspiron laptop a little over three months ago, and yesterday it would just not boot up properly at all. Tried to find the problem in safe mode and could not resolve it. Ended up completely reinstalling Windows 7, and it now seems to be working properly. Just kind of annoying that a computer that's basically still new would have a problem like that. She hasn't even been using it that extensively.
