That's what I keep coming back to, Flood Pants. I don't think Macha has necessarily done a bad job this season. I have disagreed with some of his decisions, but it doesn't seem like he has much to work with at this point. What is he supposed to do when all his starters can't go more than 5 innings and whatever reliever he sticks in the game gives up multiple runs? But like you said, it's really doubtful there's any chance he's going to be the manager again in 2011, so it may just be time to cut the line and send a message to the team and fans. -

The thing with the Rays is that they have publicly said they will be cutting back payroll this year (their attendance is relatively terrible and I'm sure there are other factors). I'm not sure they will be able to afford Fielder's salary for next year, so they might not be willing to give up much to get him since they might have to flip him in the off-season. -
I think Melvin's recent failures just show what a tightrope walk being a small market GM actually is. I think the only real two mistakes he has made are the Suppan contract and the Hall extension. Take those two mistakes away and we'd have a lot more money to play with. Of course at the time I supported both of those moves, so I guess that just shows what I know. In order to make the playoffs regularly, a small market GM has to be nearly flawless in his signings and dealings. One or two mistakes make things very difficult, whereas a big market club can absorb those bad contracts or go out and sign a hot free agent to patch things up. Melvin doesn't have those luxuries. Also, I again have to questions the comparison of the Brewers to the Twins. The Twins are in a much bigger metro market, just got a brand new stadium (which yes, we have one too, but it's already a decade old), and probably have bigger TV and radio deals than the Crew are stuck with. All things aren't equal, despite the geographic proximity of the two franchises.

Well, that's seven losses in a row. You have to figure Attanasio and/or Melvin will look at doing something drastic sooner than later.

Yeah, Weeks has looked bad lately. I don't know why Counsell can't start at 2B once in a while, especially since he's still hitting well.

Not sure why Coffey was still in. Axford was warming earlier in the inning. I guess Macha wanted him to work out of it, but it sure didn't look like he had much.

Can we please drop this "soft tosser" meme? There are plenty of effective pitchers in baseball that pitch in the mid to upper 80's and are effective. How many teams have a staff full of guys hitting 90+ all the time?

I assume you're referring to Bobby Valentine. I'm not sure if he'd even be interested in managing the Brewers at this point. I remember hearing that the two sides talked before Macha was hired last year, but I don't know if there was any real mutual interest.

I like this move. Hopefully Parra can prove himself as a starter again, and I'd rather see him get a start than Suppan.

I don't know why Gagne always gets brought up in these discussions. He had a one year deal two years ago, and it's not like it kept us from making the post-season. People talk like we're still paying him. I do think Melvin should be held somewhat accountable for the amount of dead money currently on the roster. Can't really blame him for Riske (no one envisioned him being injured over almost his entire contract, and he didn't have a big injury history), but it does seem at this point he overpaid for Hawkins and Hoffman, and of course we know the situations with Suppan and Hall. The decision to keep Corey Hart at his current salary seems really questionable too. It just seems like he's been very inefficient with how he's spent his money, especially this season.

It's an intriguing idea. I hear Saltalamacchia is looking like a mess right now in AAA, so it sounds like they could use some extra catching depth. Seems like there should be some kind of fit for a trade. -
As far as we know they are still trying to negotiate an extension with Fielder. I assume once it becomes obvious it won't happen, Melvin will begin putting out feelers. It's pretty rare for a marquee player to be dealt in mid-May, or even mid-June.

That is probably accurate. I can understand why Attanasio would look at it that way, though. It seems that this team's revenue is so heavily tied to ticket sales, so he doesn't want to see attendance dip too much. It's a tough spot to be in for a franchise.

I'd love to see that. Give those three and Rickie Weeks as many ABs as possible.

If people really want a fiery manager, Ozzie Guillen is supposedly on the hot seat in Chicago. Maybe Doug can call Kenny Williams and they could do a manager swap? In all seriousness, if you fire Macha now, it's going to be Randolph or Sveum as the interim manager. They're not going to find a "permanent" guy in the middle of the season. I can't believe someone suggested Joe Torre though. I have to believe he's closer to retirement than looking to jump to another team.

Too Early to Be Demoralized?

I agree Crew07. I think one of the major problems is that Gallardo in particular isn't really pitching like a #1. More like a strong #2. When you don't have a real #1 pitcher, "ace", "stopper", whatever you want to call it in the rotation, your team probably isn't going to contend. I just don't get why none of them are stepping up and going a bit deeper into games. It seems like every single game lately we've seen a starter use 25-30 pitches in one of the first three innings. Just not good at all, and it's going to destroy the bullpen if it hasn't already. It makes me question what Peterson is teaching these guys. -
I think it's hilarious Michael broke up with his girlfriend via text message. Classic Michael, as he's done that before and obviously learned nothing.

Too Early to Be Demoralized?

After seeing three Brewers losses first hand this week, I am definitely demoralized. Also, somewhat angry. I just don't think Macha is the right manager for this team. Do I blame him for everything? No. He is working with what he was given. I just don't agree with many of his decisions, especially having Narveson throw 130 pitches. However, Melvin has to be held accountable for putting together a terrible pitching staff two seasons in a row. The starting rotation is just unacceptably bad right now. Chances are they will improve somewhat as the season continues, but right now it's getting embarrassing to watch this team. I also wonder what good Rick Peterson is doing. He definitely doesn't seem to be the miracle worker that Mike Maddux seemed to be.
