  1. Even if they somehow win three yet this week, they'll be sitting at 18-26 on the season, and quite possibly still in fifth place. Not really sure if that is good enough to save Macha at this point. I was reading Dave Cameron's assessment of the situation, and he figured that if 92 wins is considered the number needed to make the playoffs (which may be slightly high), they need to play like .620 ball the rest of the way. I don't know if this team is even capable of .550-.600 ball the rest of the way. I hope Melvin and Attanasio are being honest with where this team's chances are this season.
  2. It sounded like in Spring Training the coaches and Macha were pretty much just letting Hoffman do his own thing, which is to be expected when you're dealing with a veteran pitcher. I really don't think anyone can blame his woeful season thus far on Macha or Peterson.
  3. I think partly the quick re-signing of Hoffman was a sort of P.R. move. Hoffman was obviously popular last year and the signing basically said, "We're going to try again next year." I'll admit I was fine with the re-signing at the time, but it does seem like they well overpaid for him, given how the market shook out. I'm fine with all your suggested moves. I would probably dump Vargas before Suppan. At least you can put Suppan in garbage time outings to eat innings, and he has been OK-ish as a reliever. Vargas seems to be completely useless. As far as Davis, I wonder if some team would be willing to do a small trade for him. Like maybe a middling A or AA prospect for him. There have to be teams out there that could have a use for him, and he's bound to bounce back from his bad start this season.
  4. Yeah, TLB, realistically that's a more logical scenario. I guess they can keep using Marco as a long man out of the pen for right now.
  5. Sounds more like wishful thinking to me. I find it hard to believe anyone beyond Hoffman's family and Melvin and/or Macha would know if he has plans to retire.
  6. Yeah, I screwed up. I meant June 24th (Thursday).
  7. Oh, I don't think there's anyone believing there is something unlucky about Hoffman at this point. It's obvious he doesn't have his changeup working, and if he doesn't have that pitch, he has nothing. It's not like he's giving up seeing eye grounders. He's giving up hits that are crushed, and too often over the wall.
  8. Just remembered I'm going on a bus trip to the game on June 26th. Could be ugly as it's against Minnesota and I'm sure a lot of Twinkies fans will be on hand.
  9. Well, they are currently in first place in the AL West. Acquiring Prince by mid-season would certainly seem like a move that would put them over the top. I would gladly take Smoak back if he actually seems like a legit prospect (I admit to not knowing a lot about him, but have heard he seems like a solid 1B). I think we'd definitely need to get a pitcher back along with him as well, otherwise it's relatively pointless. Smoak/Scheppers seems like it would be a nice return as suggested, though I'm not sure if Texas would do it. Seems like it would be a fair deal to me. As far as the Red Sox, I hope people are noticing that Ortiz seems to be hitting again. I think the likelihood of the Red Sox dealing for a 1B/DH type mid-season is becoming less and less likely.
  10. Another big change ahead: Very soon we could see the starting rotation consist of Gallardo, Parra, Estrada, Narveson, and Bush. Doesn't sound so bad to me at this point.
  11. The point is that no one wants to be the guy to tell a first ballot future HoFer that he's done. Haudricourt's premise of the article is correct. Yes, technically Macha is the manager and should make these decisions, but it's not that simple in this situation. It's like what the Mariners are faced with regarding Griffey right now.
  12. I didn't have a problem with the article. He's probably right that Hoffman needs to be honest with himself at this point and realize he's hurting the team.
  13. This is pretty depressing and probably fairly accurate.
  14. As far as Macha, with this coming Monday being an off day, I could see that being pink slip day for him.
  15. Anyone know what the magic date would be to avoid losing a year of service time?
  16. I was thinking the next two should be gimmes for the Brewers, but then remembered that the Pirates are ahead of us in the standings right now.
  17. I'd personally say: AL East NL West NL East AL Central NL Central AL West
  18. I remember the Nats were criticized for possibly giving up on Estrada too early.
  19. Correct. He didn't even give Melvin a chance to counter-offer.
  20. Mmmmm...liquidation. Sounds good to me at this point.
  21. I'm already 1-4 on the season, with three losses seen first hand last week.
  22. My point was that he has found guys like Kolb, Turnbow, Cordero, and Torres who have all been quite good for at least a while. And of course he signed Hoffman who was nearly lights out last season.
  23. I'd love to trade him before he inevitably cools off later this season. I don't know if they had planned on tendering him next season anyway.
  24. Melvin tried, and Cordero obviously didn't want to stay here.
