  1. The big difference with the Packers and Brewers is that it takes more of a time commitment to be a dedicated baseball fan than a football fan. I think for a lot of people in this state, the Packers are their one weekly sports commitment. They watch the game on Sunday for three hours, and that's it. That's never going to change.
  2. This is just one of those things that gets magnified when the offense puts up a big zero spot against a pitcher with a 5.00+ ERA.
  3. My dad is convinced Chris Smith would be a serviceable starting pitcher.
  4. One nice thing around here is that you can go into bars when the Brewers are on and the game will usually be on TV, without having to beg the server or bartender to put the game on. It does seem like the talk radio stations are avoiding the usual Packers training camp over-hype, at least right now. It helps that the team is actually competitive so there is a lot of Brewers stuff to talk about at this point.
  5. Good news for the Brewers from a business standpoint, yet again. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/brewers.html "The average rating for Brewers local telecasts in the first half of the season ranked third among all teams in Major League Baseball, according to Nielsen Media Research. Brewers games on FS Wisconsin averaged 7.1 (or 64,279 households) in the Milwaukee market, second only to the Boston Red Sox (9.5) and St. Louis Cardinals (7.4)."
  6. This is probably the most realistic option right here. As someone who used to work at an electronics store, I can tell you that the chances of your TV arriving damaged via UPS or FedEx are probably pretty high.
  7. I liked Gorzelanny in the past. Seemed like he had a lot of potential which just hasn't clicked yet...would not mind at all if the Brewers could give him a shot. The Brewers would definitely have to eat Hall's salary in this scenario though.
  8. The draft situation this past year definitely ticked me off, but I hope it was just a fluke that won't happen again. It did go to show that you can't necessarily bank on things in the draft panning out. I do agree with your premise that they should make a hard push to re-sign Fielder. Braun and Fielder have proven to be one of the most potent offensive combos in the game. I just don't know if it's in the cards or not. Your idea of surrounding them with young, cheap talent makes sense, though.
  9. So he couldn't even fill in at 2B if Counsell/McGehee can't play there every day?
  10. Sounds like a pipe dream at this point. The Mariners are solidly in contention, and I can't see them doing a 2-for-1 deal.
  11. Pierre is an interesting player...I think he gets bashed a lot more than he deserves, maybe because he looks like a 12 year old in his dad's baseball uniform. At the same time, he is fairly overpaid, and I don't see how he's a good fit for a team like the Brewers. I'm not sure if Macha would know what to do with him, frankly (I'm not bashing Macha, just don't think Pierre would fit his current style of managing).
  12. MLB Trade Rumors has a blurb that the Red Sox are "desperately trying to move Lugo" to clear a roster spot for some of their guys returning soon (Lowell, etc). I wonder if Melvin will at least inquire. I was surprised when I looked up his stats, hearing about what a bad year he's having, but he's hitting above .280 and has an OBP over .350. I know his defense has been subpar this year, but maybe a change of scenery would help.
  13. monty, your line of thinking is OK, but it's going to take much more than that to get him to sign any kind of extension. You're really only talking three years beyond his current contract...I'm guessing Boras and Prince will want at least five years, minimum. Keep in mind the Brewers previously offered Prince a contract around $60 million last spring, which he turned down. I hope Melvin at least talks with Prince's camp about it during the off-season, though. Who knows? Maybe Prince really enjoys playing with his current team and will want to stay...but it won't be for cheap.
  14. Judging by how he's pitching out of the bullpen lately, I kind of hope not. Burns was fine in his last start, hopefully he can continue doing enough to keep the team in games...but it's looking more and more like Melvin has to make a move if this team will have any realistic chance at the post-season. We're not going to make it with this sub-standard piece meal current rotation for too much longer.
  15. Right. Though we have to remember there's only about two and a half weeks until the trade deadline. Not a ton of time to flip flop in decision making.
  16. Frankly, with how quiet things have been on the trade rumor front in regards to the Brewers, it's really hard to say what Melvin may or may not do. My gut is that he'll hold out for about another week, hope the Brewers come out of the All Star break on a hot streak, and that will allow him to justify making a big move. If they falter, it's going to be hard to justify taking on additional payroll. I don't think there's any way they "sell" any big parts during the season, though.
  17. Apparently Bush didn't look too good in his start last night. Gave up five runs and six hits in just three innings.
  18. Isn't the problem with this though that so many pitching prospects just flame out or never even make it to the big leagues? For every Gallardo or even Manny Parra, there seems to be three or four Jeffress or Rogers types.
  19. Yep, definitely. I wouldn't take this one lying down. If you decide to do something, let us know how it goes.
  20. I don't know...I'm kind of indifferent to whether it should count or not. I think it's better than just having it alternate NL/AL like they used to.
  21. I have not seen them linked to Morneau, maybe before he signed a 6 year deal in 2008, but not lately. They have been linked to Mauer who is a free-agent after the 2010 season. I guess I dont think it is that comical to think most players want to come and play for one the best run and best producing teams in baseball. Now obviously they cannot get everyone like they might talk but it would not be far-fetched to see them land Mauer and Prince, because they could have the money, and if either guy gets traded Boston has the prospects to trade and have shown with trading Hanley for Beckett they are not afraid to do it. Yeah, I meant Mauer. You are right that they are a well run organization, but even they have their limits on how many upper echelon players they can pay.
  22. I don't play softball, but don't most leagues have rules against "doctoring" a ball? I would assume freezing a ball would fall under that category. Pretty unethical and unsportsmanlike if you ask me.
  23. Well, if you read any of the Boston rumors (and there are always tons of them due to the popularity of the team and the coverage they get on the four letter network), it seems like their team and fans want about every good player on the team. Justin Morneau is cited as a future target, etc. I don't know if they'll go after Prince or someone else. It's really too early to predict. Not to turn this into a side rant, but it gets comical how they seem to assume every single player wants to make Fenway their home, and that their team can bankroll any player. Oh well.
  24. Yeah, Haudricourt had a funny tweet last night along the lines of, "Do the NL players sit around reminiscing about 2002 when they got that tie and didn't lose?"
  25. I could see them offering up to a 5 year, $100 million deal, or something along those lines...which Boras will inevitably pass up when the Red Sox or someone offer him 6 years and $130 million or something crazy like that.
