  1. Well, this certainly doesn't help our chances, though Holliday is having a down year.
  2. Yeah, I caught that too: "The Brewers may be the biggest threat to the Phillies, but probably only if they're willing with shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar and maybe also top hitting prospect Mat Gamel. Left-hander Manny Parra's name is believed to be in the mix, as well." He doesn't specificially say they would have to trade all three to get Halladay, just suggesting one or some combination of those three will be needed. I can't believe Melvin would give up all three to get Halladay. I'm personally hoping Parra is not dealt, maybe even more than the other two. I guess I'd be willing to do a package centered around Parra, but not with Escobar and/or Gamel as well. Trading Parra just creates another hole to fill.
  3. Well said bklyn, I agree. Also, for those saying Macha has been a bad hire...he's basically been managing the Brewers for three and a half months of regular season baseball. I think it's a little premature to be calling for him to be replaced as of yet. So far I actually like most of his in game moves...sure there are things that can be criticized, but I think you can nit pick any skipper game to game. I think he's definitely been an upgrade from Ned in terms of how he handles the bullpen, the fact he usually shows a quicker hook with starting pitchers who struggle, and the fact he hasn't stuck with the same struggling guys like Ned would have.
  4. Not to speak for GB12, but I don't think he literally meant everyone there...however, if you check out that blog on a regular basis, the vast majority of discussion there is pretty much drivel. Basically the polar opposite of this forum. There are very few posters there that really make any insightful comments, or have anything substantive to add as far as rumors (which was kind of my point earlier). At least a few people over there did call out some of the latest rumor mongers over there pretty thoroughly.
  5. Dunn is in the first year of a two year deal. Owed $12 million next season (according to Cot's).
  6. I think it's a neat achievement, but since it wasn't a guy on my team, it doesn't hold any personal sentimental value or anything. I didn't tune in to see it, figuring to see highlights later on. That said, good for him.
  7. Yeah, I guess I wasn't looking at it that way. My guess is a team like St. Louis or someone else that really needs offense will probably pony up more for Dunn than whatever the Brewers would theoretically be willing to do.
  8. Oh, I know all too well. I was just posting for the sake of conversation. Also, since this was brought up before, here's a partial list of starting pitchers who will be free agents after this season (taken from MLB Trade Rumors): Josh Beckett - $12MM club option with a $2MM buyout Erik Bedard Justin Duchscherer Rich Harden Tim Hudson - $12MM mutual option with a $1MM buyout John Lackey Cliff Lee - $8MM club option with a $1MM buyout Brett Myers Brandon Webb - $8.5MM club option with a $500K+ buyout Todd Wellemeyer To me, that is not the most inspiring list. I don't see anyone we would realistically have a chance to sign. That's why I think making a trade like the ones proposed for Halladay or Lee would be so helpful now, because I can't see Melvin going out and signing any of those guys, and I doubt we have enough to trade for a high quality starting pitcher during the off season either. It's not like the Brewers will be the only team looking. Edit: To add to that, we're currently still 4th in the NL in runs scored, but 13th in pitching. How does that not say "Acquire some top tier pitching help?"
  9. "And why are we so happy that the Brewers made the playoffs, only to embarrass themselves and prove, emphatically, that they did not belong there. Dougie's wonder pitching staff performed oh so well in the playoff series, didn't they." They did belong there because they made it in. The Cubs had an outstanding season last year (I believe they lead the NL in wins, right?), but got swept. Did they "not belong", too? At least the Brewers won a playoff game, which I attended. I wouldn't give back the experience of watching on the last day of the season, seeing the Brewers clinch, and then seeing that winning game against the Phillies for anything. This team had to get the monkey off it's back...not making the playoffs for over 25 years was making a mockery of the organization. We never have to hear about "since '82" again, and for that I'm very glad. Sometimes it's also about business...to the casual fans, and many who renewed their tickets for this year, finally making the playoffs was a huge boon. I'll never understand how some on this site, of all places, can diminish that. After all, what's the point of being an MLB team if you never ever make the playoffs? I don't think one playoff appearance every 25 years is really demanding too much.
  10. What makes you think adding Gamel/Escobar/Salome guarantees a shot at the playoffs next year? I get that you hate the idea of trading any prospects at all, but quit trying to act like everyone thought this was going to be a throwaway season. Most people were fairly optimistic going into the season.
  11. To be honest, I just looked up Rolen's stats and was taken aback. Hitting almost .320 with a .376 OBP. Had no idea he was having a year like that so far. I guess I could get more on board with acquiring him, given that.
  12. He has played RF very occasionally, but I have to believe his primary position would have to remain in LF. Braun could probably easily make the transition to the other corner at this point.
  13. I would definitely say Counsell has been a solid contributor on offense this season thus far, but I get your point.
  14. I have a hard time criticizing the Riske signing. No one could have foreseen a devastating injury that has taken him out for basically the whole length of his contract.
  15. I know this is pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of reliable rumors, but there are a couple posters on the JSOnline blog that seem pretty confident something is going to be breaking today, in regards to Halladay. I'm not holding my breath at this point, though.
  16. Personally I would hate to see us turn into the Cubs. Lots of big contracts for just above average and rapidly aging players. Plus a horrible stadium to boot (I'll admit I've never been to Wrigley, but by all accounts I think I would hate it).
  17. I guess for me it all boils down to who you could put into the Brewers GM position that would realistically do a much better job. I don't see anyone floating around out there who you could reasonably expect to do a whole lot more, given the Brewers current market and budget constraints. It's not like Mark Attanasio would hire a new GM and say, "Here's another $20 million in pay roll to play with! Go to town!"
  18. Yes, but let's be honest. Two young pitchers, neither of whom had ever pitched a full season in MLB as an SP, and three guys projected to put up an ERA somewhere between 4-5.00 did not look like a playoff contending rotation.
  19. To be fair though he did offer Lee a very sizable contract (which Houston ended up blowing out of the water, which will probably haunt them eventually), and Cordero didn't really give Melvin a chance to "give in to his demands."
  20. We'll still have Suppan next year though.
  21. I do agree giving up Parra at this point would be kind of silly, since that would still leave a gaping hole in the #5 pitching spot. A rotation of Halladay/Gallardo/Parra/Looper/Suppan looks a heck of a lot better than Halladay/Gallardo/Looper/Suppan/Burns (or McClung or some AAA pitcher with no MLB experience to speak of).
  22. I've been an advocate of getting Dunn, maybe more than some. Put him in LF and switch Braun to RF, seems to make sense. I just look at having Braun/Fielder/Dunn in the heart of the lineup, and have to think most other teams' pitching would be terrified of that. That contract the Nats signed him to is a steal, too. The problem is the Brewers would probably still have to dump salary somewhere else to get him, and I don't know where that would happen at this juncture in the season.
  23. Do we really need Rolen at this point? Maybe if Gamel is going to get traded it makes sense, or McGehee has to go on the DL or something...otherwise I don't see the point.
  24. I still think Melvin has had more hits than misses. The misses he's had haven't been far reaching (other than maybe signing Hall and Suppan) and haven't hurt the team that much.
  25. I can't be mad at Melvin for not signing anyone better than Looper, since there didn't seem to be much out there. However, I do feel I can be somewhat irritated that a trade hasn't happened yet, since it should have been obvious you couldn't expect Gallardo and Parra to carry an otherwise mediocre rotation all year.
