  1. I have a different definition of what profit is to me. Profit is what you take in before expenses and taxes or operating income or whatever you want to call it. I probably should have just used income then there wouldn't have been as much confusion. You understand that no business in the United States works in the way you're suggesting though, right? And yes, income would be a much better word, since by its definition profit only comes after expenses.
  2. I don't know...I think Kendall might actually be a little better defensively than Varitek at this point.
  3. Uh...profit is your gross income, minus expenses. You get that, right?
  4. I don't get how you can say "there is no expense to produce or sell a ticket." Maybe the tickets are very cheap to print, but there are still production costs involved. They also have to pay the sales people a salary or commission. So how can that add up to "100% profit." Things don't just happen in a vacuum, you know?
  5. Just curious...who is "G-Rob?"
  6. Hmmm...that really is pretty interesting. I guess it goes to show that even if pitchers do like working with Varitek, they don't necessarily perform better with him behind the plate.
  7. I was laughing when I saw there were reports "Varitek might sit out the season or retire." I think he was badly overestimating his own worth at this point.
  8. Yeah, if we're looking for MLB broadcast experience, maybe Eric Byrnes is available. I'm kidding...
  9. Saying those things are "100% profit" is kind of naive. They have to pay the parking attendants, maintain the lots, and pay their ticket sellers, right?
  10. endaround, I dont' think that's really a fair thing to say. Let's pretend the economy is going to continue getting worse for a while...attendance would probably plummet at Miller Park. Consequently parking, concession, and advertising revenue would fall. Dont you think Mark Attanasio would lose quite a bit of revenue? Also, the value of his team would more than likely plunge. That's real financial risk right there. You are probably right that MLB wouldn't outright let a team go bankrupt, but it's not like the Expos were in a good situation at the end of their lifespan...and the Nationals aren't exactly doing great right now, either, though that is probably due more to their management than any economic reasons.
  11. Patrick, that is exactly right. More risk = more reward, just like in any business.
  12. fondy: It was known he read the board from time to time, as he mentioned brewerfan.net on the radio broadcasts occasionally. I'm pretty sure he did not post here, though. I'm sure Brian would know for sure.
  13. I do kind of wish they would either have the DH or not have it across all of MLB. I just think it's kind of silly that in 2009 they still have to have this artificial separation across the two leagues. It does seem like increased revenue sharing would be a huge benefit for both players and many teams.
  14. Doing a lockout for a "year or two" would be completely devastating to the sport as a whole. You'd have casual fans whining about how they'll never go to another game like you did in the mid '90s. I think, as someone raised in another thread, we'll see signifcant changes after 2011, when the current agreement runs out. However, if the player's union isn't completely stupid, there won't be a lockout.
  15. That would be kind of amusing...although in Sheets' case, the few extra months to recover and rehab his elbow might be beneficial. I can't imagine Manny Ramirez sitting out that long though. I'm sure he'll be signed by spring training, one way or another.
  16. No, not really. That's why he doesn't get much attention or press anymore...he kept playing out the "Hey, I'm actually coming back for one more year!" thing one too many times. People around campus think he's basically a joke. I mean, I graduated from Whitewater more than six years ago, and the guy has poured drinks for me at a local bar as recently as a few months ago. Not that there's anything wrong with bar tending, but after all those years of school, you'd think someone would aspire to a bit more than that. But then again he supposedly has all these different projects going, so who knows, he could end up making a bunch of money off all this and get the last laugh...but I doubt it.
  17. I haven't seen the horrible reviews...most of the ones I'm seeing on the internet seem to rate it average to mediocre. Still, like I said, I'd rather wait for The Show '09, since '08's GM mode was more than enough for me, the little I played around with it.
  18. Just hopefully for the better and not the worst. I'd rather not see a repeat of '06, personally.
  19. Plus from what I understand, Salome isn't exactly a sure thing at this point.
  20. I won't get worried until we actually find out who it is. No matter who it is, there's going to be a group of fans that are unhappy with the pick. A lot of people were fretting about Brian Anderson when his hiring was announced, and I think he's ended up being pretty good on the TV side.
  21. MLB Front Office Manager is out. Anyone played it yet? Looks like the reviews say it's "OK, but not great...decent first effort", etc. I'll probably just wait for MLB 09: The Show, which comes out in little more than one more month.
  22. He's got a spring training invite with Cleveland, according to rotoworld.
  23. My assumption is that if Sheets had been re-signed, we would not have signed Hoffman. Either that or Melvin would have really pursued the Cameron trade with the Yankees pretty hard to make some salary room.
  24. Just noticed his website blog said he just started his "29th college semester", so he is indeed still going.
  25. Well, none of those guys are exactly exciting to begin with...I just don't get what Melvin's plan is if someone goes down early in the season. We basically have no one to call up right now, and Capuano probably won't be ready until June or July in a best case scenario.
