  1. The problem is that if he does have another 50HR season, his value will be through the roof and the Brewers might not even be able to afford his final year of arbitration.
  2. Maybe he can take the Rafael Palmeiro route and turn invisible.
  3. Steroids can speed up recovery, but they can actually have quite a few long term negative health consequences. While I have no idea if Ripken used steroids or not, I think the fact that he's never been mentioned in connection with the drug should at least give him some defense. Also, doing steroids isn't automatically going to make you an iron man, either.
  4. No, I was referencing the comments about supposed steroid use in the NFL in the '60s and stuff.
  5. Well, that's the thing too...while I'm sure the current Brewers scouting staff will be fine, we won't really know for at least a couple years if they are competent or not without Jack Z at the helm. I guess, like I said before, after this offseason I'm really not going to be in the mood to hear about potential draft picks in the near future. It just seems like a pretty big gamble.
  6. I think this is one of those things where people need to be reminded that steroids weren't even illegal in the US until about 1990.
  7. I really doubt any guys who have come up in the last couple years are probably using steroids or HGH too much...the testing in MiLB is actually pretty stringent, from what I understand.
  8. JJHardy7, you make good points and I'll agree with you on some of them. Like with the money, I won't deny that people should make as much as they can. That's what America is basically built on...but if he cheated to get where he is now, that's another thing. I haven't always been an A-Rod basher...don't like the guy necessarily, but I respect his ability. I was at the game at Miller Park when he hit his 400th homer, and I stood and applauded with everyone else. That said if he did do steroids, a lot of respect I had for him is now gone. The pretty boy comment ties into the stuff that Joe Torre has come out and said, that he sometimes seemed to care more about how he looked than what he was doing on the field. He just comes off as this prima donna Hollywood type. The average baseball fan isn't going to like that, one way or another. Anyway, I think the smartest thing for him to do is take the Giambi route and immediately admit that he did it, and apologize. Otherwise he's going to be hounded about this stuff for the rest of his career.
  9. Honestly, I'm looking forward to hearing A-Rod get booed from now on. A pretty boy multi-multi-millionaire who used steroids, playing for the Evil Empire, whose agent used to be Scott Boras. What greater villain can you have in sports?
  10. Played through the demo this morning and it's pretty awesome. The graphics are amazing...I'm used to the PS2 version, and this is of course a huge step up. It's amazing all the little details they put in, like seeing a beach ball bounce around in the upper levels, or having the pitching coach come out instead of the manager when the situation warrants. I still kind of struggle with the pitching and hitting. I guess I'm a bit rusty. At least I only lost 3-2 in four innings of play.
  11. Just another reason to hate the Yankees.
  12. Trying him as a CF again would be a disaster. I really don't want to see him there again unless it's as an emergency fill in type thing. He's best served playing probably either 2B or 3B.
  13. Big, yeah. The latest reports on MLBtraderumors.com and the like even say the Cubs and Padres haven't even talked recently about Peavy. It's just the Cubs fanboys that keep bringing up the possibility, ignoring the reality of the ownership transition like you mentioned.
  14. Yeah...at least the Brewers will probably save a few million this June by not having to sign those extra high draft picks like SeriesFinale alluded to.
  15. Yeah, not to be inconsiderate, but I would guess at least 75% of the country has access to TBS, or ESPN for that matter.
  16. Looks pretty nice. Sadly I have US Cellular as our cell provider, so the iPhone isn't an option.
  17. Heck, have a Pilots throwback night while we're at it.
  18. Glavine might be nice to have as insurance. I'm not sure what shape he's in right now, but hearing him talk at the end of last season, he seemed really motivated to come back and have at least one more good season.
  19. The Negro League thing I get, since those teams are obviously not active in any shape or form anymore, and the Brewers would be the only logical choice to carry on the brief heritage of the Milwaukee Bears. What gets me is that the Brewers have nothing to do with the Milwaukee Braves, other than the fact that both teams played at County Stadium for part of their respective histories. It seems like a Wendy type move, like the Brewers are saying "We're not good enough to celebrate our own heritage, we have to use someone else's." But yes, maybe I'd be less bothered by the throwback uniform issue if they didn't wear them against Atlanta. Having the "Braves" vs the Braves is just odd.
  20. Yeah...the thing to remember with Sheets is he ended up being a Brewer a lot longer than most other decent players this team has had in recent memory. It's not like he left the first chance he got.
  21. bg71, I think edod wasn't suggesting the Brewers would automatically retain Sheets' rights, I think he's suggesting they should try to sign him to a low contract for 2009 in case he makes a miraculous recovery and is able to pitch again this coming season.
  22. While I am not going to get my hopes up for Nixon, that was a pretty refreshing article. Nice to see a veteran player apparently busting his butt to earn a position, and not taking his tenure as a pro for granted.
  23. http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070103/070103_beane_vmed_4p.widec.jpg I can see why they picked Pitt...the resemblance is uncanny!
  24. Yeah, that's what I was kind of thinking. My DL times on PSN seem to be very hit or miss. I purchased and downloaded SF II Turbo HD Remix a couple weeks back and that went very quickly, but it seems like whenever I try to DL a demo, it goes really slow. Maybe they allocate more bandwidth to actual purchases than free demos or something. I know it's not my connection, because DLs on my PC and laptop usually go extremely quick.
  25. Right, exactly. Like I said, the Braves retain the rights to the franchise, and the franchise history...which is why it's so silly when the Brewers do a throwback night and wear Milwaukee Braves uniforms. I really hate that...I'd rather have a team that can be proud of its own history than one that has to pretend to have links to one from another era they aren't really connected to. That said, I'm all for any other statues or monuments to the Milwaukee Braves, outside the park. The inner part of the baseball field area should be reserved for actual Milwaukee Brewers stuff.
