  1. If the Brewers fall out of first and have another losing season, I think it's Wendy Selig-Prieb.
  2. Exactly. Again, I'm not necessarily advocating a Laird for Vargas deal. I just don't get why some are so down on Vargas. I think he has a decent value to a lot of teams out there.
  3. Has Vargas really been that bad this year? He has a 4.72 ERA this year, and a career 4.88 or so. Not stellar, but probably good enough to be a fifth starter on a team like Texas, I'd think.
  4. You guys are nuts if you think Estrada isn't going to be the Brewers starting catcher anytime soon. Now, if you trade for Laird to use him as a backup, assuming Miller is gone after this season, that might be one thing.
  5. I hope he gets some sort of indefinite or lifetime suspension. The NFL has to send a message that they're not going to tolerate their players being sub-human level criminals.
  6. I don't think so, unfortunately.
  7. I do kind of wonder if we need to reevaluate a couple of the young guys, and what we can expect out of them. Rickie Weeks would be target number one for me. I know he's been injured and everything, but at some point he's either going to be a quality everyday starting 2B, or he isn't. Time is getting short here.
  8. I don't know...I don't think the pitching has been all that bad lately. It's so easy to try and lay the blame on one guy each game, and the pitcher is usually the victim...however...the offense has been absolutely anemic for quite a while now. They aren't converting runners, and when they do hit a homer, there's no one on base. It's hard for any pitching staff to win consistently if their team can only score a couple runs each game.
  9. Well...still two games above .500. That's something we often couldn't say in the past at this point in the season.
  10. Exactly...that's why I don't get why some on this board are so eager to offer him an extension right now. The same people will probably be lambasting him if he were to go down again in 2009..."We paid $70 million for this???"
  11. I agree that Zambrano is more valuable than Sheets at this point. That seems like a lot of money, but it's the Cubs. If Zambrano falls off the map, they'll just eat that cash and get someone else.
  12. I can tell you as someone who runs a small business, I often get unsolicited resumes and applications. At least you are sending in applications. I've had people simply walk in off the street, and then get a blank look when I ask for a resume or work history of some kind. We got quite a few during the late spring, early summer (typical job hunting time). A lot of times I don't bother replying after reviewing what they sent, because they're simply overqualified for what we're looking for. I'm not going to bother interviewing and hiring a person who is going to be gone in three months because they'll probably find something that pays better. Just a little insight. Also, don't harass employers. They already have your info. If they want to get in touch, they will. I know that's not what you want to hear, but calling up and sounding desperate for a job isn't going to interest employers.
  13. My big beef with Craig's List is that it's basicaly only useful if you live in a big metro area. I live in a relatively small area (Jefferson County), and trying to advertise in the Madison or Milwaukee craigslists is pretty much pointless. There are many requests on their user board to add an area like Janesville-Beloit to give people in South Central Wisconsin more coverage, but they seem to fall on deaf ears. As someone who plays music as a hobby, it makes it difficult to find people to play with. At least one of their admins could post some sort of reasoning as to why they haven't added it, but you never get any response or feedback. Their board design could be a bit less ugly looking, too, but that's a small point.
  14. If the leadoff guy gets on first base, that should theoretically be enough to get him to home plate. Of course, it doesn't always work out that way, but there's so much that can happen if guys simply don't strike out, or don't hit a weak popup for an out.
  15. I agree with that Bob Melvin pitching strategy 100%. Sometimes a team has to accept that it's not their day, and manage their bullpen in order to win the next game.
  16. You can't really call it "rock bottom" since they are still in first place, but they have the worst record in the NL since July 1st, if I'm not mistaken. They really need to turn things around and finish up at least moderately strong in the final six weeks of the season to have hopes of retaining first and making the postseason. Otherwise, this is going to be an extremely disappointing season, and unlike last year, we won't be able to blame it on the numerous injuries. It will simply be bad play and sub-par performance on the field, coupled with arguably bad management. They can turn it around, but it's up to the players to start winning at this point.
  17. I don't think Wells is the answer at this point. Our pitching is struggling, so bring in a pitcher who is basically at the end of the line? No thanks.
  18. I guess the only real "bad fans", IMO, are the really belligerent or ignorant ones. You know, the drunk guy behind you at Miller Park who screams that the only reason Graffanino is on the team is because of the salary cap, or something like that (yes, I've seriously heard things like that said at Brewers games).
  19. I don't think it makes you a bad fan, but calling for the firing of a manager whose team is still in first place probably makes you a non-realist.
  20. This division race seems to be like the story of the tortoise and the hare, except there are two hares who are both crippled, and manage to stumble at the exact same time, while the old slow and steady tortoise slowly gains ground...
  21. I liked the part where he says Vick "swore allegiance to Al-Qaeda". I was laughing hard reading this one last night...it was a good distraction from the Brewers' loss.
  22. My point was that maybe we have to quit talking about "extrapolating" and "potential" with Sheets, and weigh whether he should get an extension based on what he's done and can be reasonably expected to do in the future. Can you logically say Sheets will bounce back and have a 15+ win season next year, at this point? Don't get me wrong, I hope he does, but it doesn't seem like a reasoned assumption at this point.
  23. Don't get all the Spurling hate here. I'm not claiming he was a great pitcher, but every team needs a guy who can come in and suck up innings when you're already out of the game. Spurling was that guy. I guess Wise will take up that mantle now. At least people can stop calling for Gross to come up now. Hopefully he'll come out hot from the gates and help this anemic offense score some runs.
  24. I am not opposed to extending Sheets, but I do question why some are so eager for it. I know he's an amazing pitcher when he's "on", but he hasn't exactly been stellar for almost three seasons now, due to various injuries. Everyone is pining for him to be the pitcher he was back in '04. How do we know that is ever going to happen at this point?
  25. All of this talk about Braun's defense is suddenly coming up after one bad play last night. Yes, he should have at least knocked that ball down, but I wouldn't say it was an easy play, either. That ball took a tough hop, and he just missed coming up with it. Overall, he's made some great defensive plays and throws, but he's missed some balls, too. He's going to develop defensively like Weeks...slowly at first, but then you're not going to notice him out there because he'll be making pretty much all the plays he should. He's only been in the majors for not even four months now...give him time.
