  1. Well, definitely seems like things are looking up if Attanasio is directly involved in the meetings.
  2. Stupid Cubs...spending money and signing players. What are they thinking?
  3. That's assuming Penny is even really available, too.
  4. Exactly. I meant a player similar to Carlos Lee, as I feel as though the Brewers are going to be missing a power hitter like him next season.
  5. Exactly. People are acting like FA contracts are just out of whack this year. What, do you expect them to go down next year, out of kindness from the player's union or something?
  6. rluzinski, so we should just accept that unless the stars align properly for one season, the Brewers will never have a shot at the playoffs?
  7. TooLiveBrew, you make some fair points, but what Mark Attanasio says in public and what actually happens on the field are two different things. Maybe his tenure so far has been successful from a profit standpoint, but not an on-the-field standpoint. So far the best thing we've gotten is an 81-81 record. Not much to brag about.
  8. Big Reed summed up my feelings pretty well. Mark Attanasio basically bought a broken team. A good analogy would be if you bought yourself an old beater of a car, with a new paint job on it...the thing still needs a new engine. Mark Attanasio has not bought that engine yet. He has kept it running and paid for the gasoline as prices have gone up, but we don't have that new engine to take us over the big humps in the road.
  9. We should base a free agency signing on what's best for the Brewers, not what the Cardinals are or aren't willing to do. You have to overpay for decent starting pitching. It sucks, but we've all been through this before. As far as fans being upset, I don't think anyone is mad at Attanasio. He's spent more money than the Seligs ever did. That said, it's hard to feel good when your team is looking at a 25th year without a playoff appearance, and your team are basically dismissed as a AAAA feeder team.
  10. Just get it done, Doug. I don't see how anyone could feel Sheets might be jealous. If anything, it would show him this team is trying to help him win, and take some pressure off of him to boot.
  11. Sorry to say it, but Sheets looked kind of shaky in some of the games he did pitch in this past season. He needs to get healthy to get back on track, and that's really the bottom line.
  12. I don't think a pitching acquisition should or shouldn't be made based on the defensive capabilities of an extremely young infield.
  13. I can only hope. What makes you so opimstic? I remember last year when people on this board were making projected lineups with Wisconsin's own Jarrod Washburn penciled into the rotation, and look how that turned out.
  14. Please explain, since I posted what I felt was a reasonable opinion.
  15. I agree with that, especially if the added corner OFer would be a "big bopper" like Carlos Lee.
  16. Exactly. We'll probably be saying next off season "$15 million/yr for a starting pitcher may be what the market says, but it's too much money right now."
  17. Agreed. OPS gets thrown around here too much as a be all and end all stat. What would it take to get Crisp anyway?
  18. Well, given that he has more than one World Series ring, I'd say he knows what he's doing. I definitely wish Yost would adopt a pitching philosophy a little closer to LaRussa's.
  19. That is true that LaRussa tends to change pitchers often during a game.
  20. I worry about it a little too...but I firmly believe the Brewers could be "one piece away" from contention. Suppan may or may not be that piece, but I'd be willing to chance it for the better at this point. I don't want to wait one or two more seasons for the next wave of youngsters. We've given a lot of support to the Brewers over the past few seasons...it's time for them to act on that good faith.
  21. OK, I admit I was wrong on Suppan having more playing time than Davis. That doesn't change my opinion that he'd be a solid acquisition for Milwaukee.
  22. If there's no risk, may as well give him a chance. Sometimes veteran pitchers have success late in their careers.
  23. Suppan has been durable, more than Davis or Ohka. He'd be an upgrade. The bottom line is that signing him would solidfy the rotation. We're not looking at a weak NL Central in '07 like last year. The Cubs and Astros have both added offensive weapons, and the Cards look like they may be improved over last year. Heck, even the Pirates and Reds have both made moves as well. If our biggest off season acquistions are Craig Counsell and Johnny Estrada (admittedly an upgrade at catcher), then we may as well throw in the towel now.
  24. Exactly...just because the Brewers would theoretically sign him for four years, doesn't mean he'd play with the Brewers for all four years. Just because the contract would be for $40million+, doesn't mean the Brewers would necessarily pay even half of that. Plus, salary relief could be found by trading Geoff Jenkins and/or Brady Clark (among other "pieces"). I'm much more optimistic after reading that article. Please, Mr. Melvin, give us an early Christmas present by signing Jeff Suppan!
  25. Let them have him. Give me some hope. Give me Suppan.
