  1. Is this a matter of the team cutting payroll after a championship season, or are there other factors at work?
  2. Not seeing where he'd fit with the Brewers at all, unless Doug Melvin goes nuts and trades Prince Fielder or something.
  3. Agreed. I heard Tony Larussa talking about this last night (not calling the Cards a small market team), saying that once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen. You just gotta be one of eight teams, and then any team can basically beat any other team if they stay hot and make some good plays.
  4. What great prospects do we have left to trade? Gallardo and Braun? I don't think you can give up Braun, because of all the questions at 3B (heck, Braun could be starting by the end of spring training, at this point). Gallardo maybe, but I'd expect a lot in return. Not sure who else would be considered a "great prospect" in the Brewers system right now.
  5. Anyone have any idea what Koskie's physical condition is right now? A concussion can be a pretty tough thing to come back from sometimes. It also probably reduces his trade value, at least somewhat. I'm not against trying to trade him, but it would all depend on what the Twins, or any other team, would be willing to give up, obviously.
  6. I think they could flip Turnbow for a high pitching prospect, or maybe a reliever, like they did with Danny Kolb a couple years ago (Cappellan).
  7. Sorry for not following, but who's being referred to here?
  8. It would be pretty weird if Jenkins is still on the Brewers roster, come Opening Day. He'd be kind of like an albatross on the team.
  9. It is...just hard to imagine that much interest in a pitcher that old. I loved watching Johnson pitch, but it's hard to imagine a big guy like that coming back from a back injury.
  10. I like Cano, but I feel this would leave too big a hole in the starting rotation. I'd say "pass, but call again next off season."
  11. The question is, how much does a 43 year old Randy Johnson, recovering from back surgery, have left in the tank? I'm honestly asking, because I don't know. I'm assuming he's only got one or two more seasons left in him, at best.
  12. Bullpen help will probably be what we get at this point, but I'd love to see any combination of the guys mentioned (Jenkins, Clark, Mench, etc.) flipped for a big hitting corner OFer. I really think the Brewers need one more big bat in the lineup, as I don't see Jenkins returning to pre-2005 form. That way, we'd have Hall/Hart/??? as the starters, with Gross as the primary backup. That said, I have no problem with Weeks being the leadoff batter. I'd love to see Tony Gwynn Jr. evolve into that role, but I doubt it will happen by Opening Day 2007.
  13. Did he really "go out of his way" to acquire Branyan? I figured that was more of a "we can't afford anything more than gritty scrapper guys" type thing.
  14. Some team could probably use him, but he's not a fit for the Brewers.
  15. You have to wonder. It seems like a big waiting game between two guys the market has arbitrarily decided will be the "difference makers", I guess.
  16. Yeah, it's definitely encouraging to read those comments. I just hope they are sincere, and not just posturing to further encourage a bidding war. Really, I understand Suppan would theoretically want to wait for Zito to sign to drive his own value up, but you'd think he'd want to get this taken care of before Christmas so he can focus on his family and not who is countering what offer at the moment. Probably wishful thinking on my part, though.
  17. Kind of nice to get talked about on SportsCenter, huh?
  18. They should've slipped something in Jeff's drink to get him to sign on the dotted line.
  19. Steve, that's a great point. We don't even have Eveland or De La Rosa to fall back on anymore. I really don't want to see Ben Hendrickson start for Milwaukee again, and I doubt anyone here does.
  20. We need to quit whining about price. He would add depth, and you can't have enough of that when it comes to a starting rotation. We can either pay 10-12 million/yr for Suppan this off season, or cry that we can't afford the next guy for 14 or 15 million/yr next off season, while ringing our hands that the market is inflated and that MLB needs a salary cap. You can always trade him later, and trade someone like Jenkins right now for salary relief. It's just signing one guy to play for the team, not proclaiming that this is the guy who's going to take us to the promised land and be "the franchise" for the next four years. Geez.
  21. Bill Hall was the "super utility guy" in '06.
  22. Are we as Brewers fans getting a bit insecure because we see other teams making a lot of acquisitions? I'm seeing similar feelings in the thread about the Royals acquiring Zach Day and another player. Not trying to stir the pot, just wondering if there's a jealousy factor creeping in.
  23. Well, just because Mark Attanasio was saying the obvious in public "We need a better bench" (after last year's faltered in the last two months of the season) doesn't mean he's dictating to Melvin which players to go after. Besides, it's not like the Brewers actually signed Roberts, or anyone else like that.
  24. Where the hell do you come up with "Mark A. is making all the personnel decisions?"
  25. They probably discussed football and golf.
