  1. Thanks for the info, everyone. I'm hoping to avoid the drunken debauchery as much as possible. (It kind of makes me sad to think that I'm going to have to expose my son to it when he gets old enough to head over to Camp Randall.)
  2. I'm thinking of taking my kids (ages 3 and 7) to the "businessman's special" game v. the Nationals on August 11. I've never taken them to Miller Park, and I'm wondering what the best place to sit would be. I guess I would want to have an OK view of the field, low screaming-line-drive-foul-ball risk, and some nearby concessions/fun stuff. (I also have no delusions about them sitting and watching the game for very long. I will be thrilled if we get in a couple of solid innings.)

  4. It reminds me of when it was announced that Krispy Kreme was coming to Madison. The Capital Times ran a five-column headline announcing the fact on its front page. You would have that thought it was the moon landing or something. (I think Krispy Kreme has filed for Chapter 11, and The Capital Times has ceased production of its daily print edition. So that should tell you something about hype.)
  5. The union investigated the claims of every good AAA player who thought he should be promoted, well . . . let's just say they'd be pretty busy.
  6. I have to give the nod to Culver's. (What's weird to me is that there aren't more of them in Madison. We have like 4 Q-doba's, though, for some reason.)
  7. It should help Philly in the short term, and that is not good for the Brewers -- unless it means Philly can now whup the Mets into submission and render them irrelevant to the WC chase (which I sort of doubt).
  8. He's been hitting lefties OK; righties, not so much.
  9. Yes, let's give the ball to Mota and Gagne rather than Stetter. Makes perfect sense.
  10. I'm not interested in bulk necessarily, but I think I might finally take the plunge and get an NFL jersey. (Hint: he's a Louisville QB not named Brohm.) So I'd be interested in suggestions, too.
  11. How quickly they forget: 2nd all-time in franchise HR; 4th in RBI; 2nd in SLG; 4th in total bases; 4th in doubles; and a very good defender.
  12. McCarver and Buck are going to go into hyperbolic overdrive, you can be assured.
  13. I was high on Ray Durham as a possibility, I really was. But . . . I dunno. I guess he might be alright as a stop-gap? (If healthy -- and, in his case, that's a pretty big if.) Kendrick has 22 BB (!) in 792 career AB's. That seems almost impossible to me. (Rickie averages that many HBP over 162 games.)
  14. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I seem to remember seeing that Mota, Gagne, and Turnbow added up to $16 million in salary this year. Riske is, what, $4 million? So that's been pretty much $20 million right down the drain.
  15. It's encouraging to think about maybe putting McClung in the pen and having some able-bodied Nashville lad join him. This would require DFA-ing both Mota and Gagne -- which I have no problem with.
  16. I agree about the low trade value. It would be hard to get much for him now, straight-up; you'd have to dip into the minors again and package him with some prospects. I guess I disagree that we're really just talking about a half-season of substandard BA here. Rickie's OBP is .320, and, over the past month, it has been .302. I guess the counter-argument is that we should be encouraged that his OBP is 100 points greater than his BA, but I think that there are limits to the usefulness of that point. The fact is, Rickie has only had an above-average OPS+ once in his career -- 108 last year, with a torrid second half. On the whole, he's just been consistently mediocre. But . . . maybe the real question is: What do we really know about Rickie after 393 games and 1440 AB's? That really just adds up to 2+ seasons. I guess it's possible that he could still turn it around. His stats at age 24 are comparable to some guys who turned out to be nice players: Bobby Grich, Rico Petrocelli.
  17. Yeah, I am feeling a little disjointed, to say the least. And, as long as I'm here . . .Joe Buck can be a good announcer, but he's a little too in love with himself. (Bob Costas, too.)
  18. Langdon St. = moped danger zone.
  19. I'd think about it, certainly. He's a horse, and the team is going to need someone at the top of the rotation. The big question is the price, of course. If the team thinks J.J. is expendable over the long-term, it might be interesting to work him into a starter-and-prospect deal. But then the Jays are going to need pitching of their own, esp. if they deal Burnett before the deadline this year. I just can't imagine them being willing to unload someone of Halladay's caliber. (But you never know, right? GM's do wacky stuff all the time.)
  20. Rickie's OBP is .320. Over the past month, it has been .302. That's woeful for any spot in the order, but it's especially bad for lead-off. I agree that Rickie has more pop, but he hasn't shown it this year. He has one more HR than Roberts (8 to 7). I know that you referenced "second half," but Roberts has had a half-season (the first half of 2005) that was better than Rickie's second half last year. (OPS was 100 points higher than Rickie's.) I certainly wouldn't expect Roberts to have a 1.00 OPS over the second half this year, but neither would I expect Rickie to have a .900 OPS. Roberts' adjusted OPS this year is 130. Rickie's is 81. In fact, last year, even with his great second half, Rickie's OPS+ was only 108. That's the only time he's been over 100 -- above average -- in his career. I'd take the reality of Roberts over the potential of Rickie any day.
  21. I was coerced into watching the U.S. women's diving trials, and Frank Viola's daughter was competing. I'm not sure if she made it, though. They interviewed him, and he was wearing a big ol' gold chain around his neck. Very cool...
  22. Wait, I think I might take the Dodgers instead of the D'backs.
  23. But wait -- maybe that's what I'm looking for! Seriously, though, thanks for the input thus far. Sounds like a nice enough place.
  24. What annoyed me more than Reilly or Berman was the fact that there were like 8 different people analyzing/announcing/pontificating. I don't think it should take a small army of announcers to comment on what is more or less glorified BP. (I exclude Erin Andrews from the above criticism.)
  25. Oh, good, I wasn't the only one. The whole "there are too many white guys" bit was kind of an ongoing train wreck. Edit: I did a quick blog search with Google, and there is kind of a general uproar about it already.
