  1. Wow, who knew that FSN Wisconsin would be handling the production for the HR Derby?
  2. Hey, I am not much further away from those two. (I live near Memorial H.S.) They've recently redone U Ridge -- I think they had to lengthen it in order to host Big 10 championship events, etc. I haven't been there since the makeover, though, so I can't report on how it turned out. My favorite somewhat-under-the-radar-course around here is the Evansville Country Club. It's a good little course -- cheap, generally in good shape, not too crowded.
  3. Weren't there Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? (Honestly, it will be intolerable.)
  4. There are a bunch of mediocre or just plain rotten teams in the NL, that's for sure. I'm liking that S.O.S. for the Cubs. Still, I guess I'd pick: Mets Cubs D'backs Brewers (wild card, edging Phillies)
  5. So you think Ben might be tiny bit amped up on his first few pitches?
  6. Food/beverage stuff aside, I really need a ball of some kind to toss around. (Football acceptable after Sept. 1.)
  7. I'm looking into a teaching gig there, and I was wondering if there were any current students or alumni out there who could give me the word on the overall vibe there. Thanks!
  8. Riske's mediocrity has sort of flown under the radar, but I don't think it could in the second half -- not with Gagota being relegated to the scrap heap (one hopes).
  9. I like the Oaks pretty well, too, but the holes along the interstate don't really appeal to me. Otherwise, though, it's nice.
  10. A great honor for Ben, and well-deserved. (I wonder how much more he'll be able to demand in his FA negotiations because of this. I'm sure it will be on the cover of the little portfolio they put together.)
  11. Parallel discussion in Suppan thread.
  12. Re: the Bush/McClung home/road platoon, this is from the State Journal late on Sunday: While Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost said his decision is not final, he strongly suggested Sunday he will use the unusual starting rotation that will see Dave Bush pitch at Miller Park with Seth McClung get the nod on the road. "I've never seen anything like this," Yost said of the interesting arrangement. "I'm just trying to give us our best chance to win. I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel." I just don't see how this is going to work, in terms of their bullpen availability. It seems like the bullpen would be half an arm short because they periodically would be getting ready for, or resting after, their starts. I guess I also have a problem with Bush getting semi-demoted out of the rotation after his last few outings (which have been superb) because of his year-long home/road stats. His road ERA is rotten, but it includes bad starts at Wrigley in April and Florida and Pittsburgh in May. I really don't think he's the same guy now. Any thoughts?
  13. Seriously, I think the guys could set Ned's house on fire and he would still defend them. Stop treating the "kids" like kindergartners. As a rule, I like a manager to defend his players in public, and to not throw them under the bus. If you're going to criticize, save it for the clubhouse. But it is just hilarious to associate the word "encouraged" with that particular pitching performance. (pared back quoted material --1992)
  14. Yeah, I don't think it's a wild stretch, especially when you factor in the HR.
  15. It's been mentioned elsewhere, but Cameron has an OPS of 1+ over the past month (or thereabouts). I don't think he's really the issue. I'm all for not having the albatross of Rickie Weeks hanging around the neck of the leadoff spot, though.
  16. I see your point, but I've been repeatedly chastised here for unnecessarily "blaming everything on Yost." So I have decided to focus my ire on Gagne.
  17. 1.) Craig Counsell and a newcomer TBA will share time at 2B, and Rickie will be relegated to the pine 2.) Melvin will make a move for another reliever, but once again it will be for someone who was really sharp, say, 4 years ago 3.) Dave Bush will outpitch CC
  18. "We were going to really mix and match from the seventh inning on because we had the pitching do it," Yost said. "I thought Gagné's stuff was really, really good. He just made some mistakes out over the plate. He was commanding it down. He wasn't all over the place. He just got some balls over the middle and they hit him, but I was encouraged a little bit with his stuff."
  19. (Laughs.) If only, right?
  20. At what point do you just cut your losses with Gagne?
  21. So much for the emotional lift from getting CC. The team is 2-4 since last Monday. Blah.
  22. Goodness. What in the world happened to this team this week? (Besides Mota and Gagne, I mean.)
  23. So that Hamilton-Volquez trade might have involved two talented players. Jeez. They are both tearing up.
  24. Harden's start today was kind of a glass-half-empty, or glass-half-full kind of thing. 10 K's in 5+ innings is outstanding, but . . . why only 5 innings? (And, just parenthetically, it really sucks when the Cubs win these games in the afternoon, and Brewers need to win a night game just to keep pace.)
  25. Ditto. I am amazed when I see little kids, or the elderly, sitting in the smoked-foul-ball-zone. The chances of getting laced are pretty small, but the risk/reward seems a little out of whack to me.
