  1. I hate to complain about him, but, yeah, it's pretty bad sometimes. What's weird to me is that we hear about how they study film, look at pitchers' tendencies, etc., etc. And yet . . . he'll chase that down-and-away two-strike pitch pretty much every time. I'm assuming that he'll figure it out eventually, though. He's still a lad.
  2. I find Jim Powell annoying. I know that I shouldn't, and that he's probably a good guy, but I can't listen to him. I hate seeing people who are within camera range simultaneously waving and talking on their cell phones. (That is less a Brewer confession than an overall MLB rant.) I won't stay up and watch the end of late games from the West Coast.
  3. I hear what you're saying, but I think he covered himself with the caveat at the beginning. I would take the home games.
  4. The idea of Pat Burrell (OPS+ 155) being shut out of the All Star Game and Jason Varitek (OPS+ 73) being picked really makes my head hurt. Even for the AS Game, both of those things would be bad.
  5. I was thinking about Durham last week. He's old and injury prone, but he'd be great to rotate into 2B if Rickie can't get it together. And I'm sure he could be had for cheap.
  6. Another thing to keep in mind is that it's not like the Brewers were trending toward the middle of the pack in the NL. Even without CC, the team has caught up with Cards and knocked a huge chunk off the Cubs' lead in the Division. Of course, there was no guarantee that things would continue in that direction, but there was a decent chance that the team could have made the WC without him (especially given the second-half schedule). So, while I don't think CC will dramatically improve the team this season, at the very least he's going to help continue the upward trend that the team already has begun. (Sorry about the verb tenses in there, btw.)
  7. Yeah, I am just seeing this from the State Journal: Laporta, "left-hander Zach Jackson, right-hander Rob Bryson and a player to be determined in the deal."
  8. Yeah, I have to agree. It helps the team vibe, etc., but I don't think it' going to make Rickie field the ball better, or Billy strike out less. I don't think the McGriff comparison is apples-to-apples. He was in the lineup every single day for ATL. We're talking 7 innings, one game out of five. Still important, though, and likely to give a boost.
  9. Varitek? When I heard it on the radio, I thought it was an error. That's just atrocious. Maybe the players don't look at the stats when they vote? And the Rays only get two players, with the best record in baseball.
  10. I just hope "two lower-level minor leaguers" = guys we won't care about, long term. Overall, though, this is an ok roll of the dice. Now, about second base....
  11. Wow, ok, that sounds . . . sure? I'm on board if it's just LaPorta and a few minor league spare parts.
  12. I usually wont waste my time commenting on avatars, but your's is FREAKING hilarious. Very creative... But wait -- aren't the "B" members of ABBA Ben and Bjorn? If you replaced one of them with an "A," you'd get AABA? ABAA? (I could be totally wrong, though.)
  13. Agree 100%. The potential upside has been so great that you have to give him the chance. But he's actually regressed this year, it seems like. It's possible to blossom after 1,400 big-league AB's and basically four years in the bigs, especially given the injury problems he's had. But at least point I think the Brewers would be lucky to have him get to average.
  14. I see what you're saying -- his OBP is 100 points higher than his AVG. If he hit .260 and had an OBP of .360, it would be cool. The problem is that he's hitting .210 and his OBP is .317. He's not exactly killing in SLG, either. And he's still clumsy in the field. (Overall, OBP on this team is just ugly. He's not the only culprit.)
  15. I guess I'm wondering what the most likely outcome will be. Certainly, if getting CC guaranteed a playoff spot, I think you'd have to suck it up and pay the price. (The extra picks in the draft would mitigate the long-term damage.) But there is no guarantee of that. Also . . . given how close the Brewers are to the WC currently, wouldn't it be possible to make the playoffs by adding someone less costly than CC? That way, you can have your cake and eat it, too -- you bolster the rotation and you keep your prospects. Frankly, I would rather pick up Maddux for TGJ and then make some kind of Rickie-plus-whomever deal for Brian Roberts. I think the overall impact on '08 would be greater than just adding CC, and the long-term damage cost would be far less. And, either way, the bullpen still needs work. Bringing in CC and then turning over his starts to that bunch of retreads seems pointless.
  16. CC's career ERA+ is 115 (25 among current P's with 100+ decisions, tied with Benny), and his career WHIP is 1.265 (19th). That WHIP number puts him between Javier Vasquez and Jon Leiber. SO to BB is 2.54, good enough for 18th (between Kevin Millwood and Chris Carpenter). When you look at his numbers, those are the kinds of names that keep popping up as being comparable -- save for Benny, who actually profiles significantly better in most categories. (Mark Buerhle is another one who is in the ballpark.) He's really a second-echelon SP -- good, well above average, but not great. Would we deal all of these guys for Mark Buerhle?
  17. Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make.
  18. Kendall actually hit below his career averages across the board in Chicago last year, and his adjusted OPS was 84 -- below average. It seemed comparatively good because he had played a dismal 80 games in Oakland.
  19. I'm being to not like any of the various iterations of the deal for CC.
  20. Basically, with Maddux, you'd get a decent upgrade over McClung (who would go back to the pen) for the remainder of the season -- more or less for free. (No offense, TGJ.) CC would be a bigger upgrade over that term, obviously, but the long-term value wouldn't be as great b/c of the cost. If McClung is a 4 out of 10, maybe Maddux is 5-6, and CC is 7-8. I just don't think that CC is going to be so colossally better than Maddux over the short term that you would give away so many prospects, as opposed to essentially nothing.
  21. See, this is why I would rather make another kind of deal. Just to think out loud for a second: basically, it's going to boil down to starting CC rather than McClung. The idea would be that CC would outperform McClung over roughly 10 starts by . . . 1.5 runs allowed per start (just to make up a number). So the team would save 15 runs by having CC. (Or make up another number -- 20 runs, or whatever.) I know that could make a difference, but how much, really? And at what long-term cost?
  22. Point well taken. And Corey is almost exactly the same (120).
  23. I just hate the rental idea, period. But I agree that the Brewers might be living on borrowed time with current rotation, especially the back end. I think I'd rather see a deal for a #2-3 starter who might be a keeper for next year; the price wouldn't be as steep, certainly, and it might be a more efficient way to serve the team's overall needs.
