  1. Amid all of his spinning, has Ned come out and said something along the lines of, "Obviously, this was unacceptable behavior; we can't have guys whupping on each other in the dugout in the middle of a game; they should know better"? That does have to be said by the manager, right?
  2. Coming from Prince, that's actually quite a mea culpa.
  3. It also just seems flatly ridiculous to call something "private" when it occurred in public, in front of 20,000 people, was caught on tape, and was subsequently broadcast around the globe.
  4. It's also interesting to compare Yost's comments to those of John Fox after the Steve Smith fight. The training camp brawl actually was somewhat more "private" than what transpired between Manny and Price: it wasn't during a game, and it wasn't captured on video and rebroadcast 9 million times. But Fox, to his credit, suspended Smith (arguably the best player on his roster?) and publicly said: "What he did was wrong. We take it very seriously. He's being punished severely. ... It's an act that's inexcusable and it can't happen." I hate to fall into the trap of making everything about Yost; this incident was basically Prince's fault, not Ned's. But Ned's handling of this is inexplicable to me. I'm sorry, but there are times when you do have to call out players publicly -- not for missing a bunt sign or failing to run out a grounder or wearing your hair too long, but for doing something that crosses the line of serious misconduct. What Prince did clearly falls into that category. He assaulted a teammate during a game, for god's sake. This isn't the crime of the century, by any stretch, but it does merit some kind of public condemnation from the perpetrator's boss.
  5. I'm really amazed that Ned didn't even get up during the entire altercation. I'm not saying that he needed to read the riot act to Prince right then and there, but I can't fathom him just sitting there, a few away, while everyone else was up and intervening. And his comments after the game were horrible, even for him. Sure, you're going to downplay the significance of the scuffle -- I have no problem with that -- but he seemed annoyed that anyone would have the audacity to even ask him about it. (Dude, you had a fight in your dugout that involved one of your two highest profile players, and it was all over ESPN about 10 minutes after it happened. People are going to ask. Just say, "These are competitive guys, and they're going to show fire sometimes, blah, blah, blah.") I don't think this is necessarily the end of the world, and I haven't soured on Prince completely because of it (although I do think he's an idiot who deserves to be suspended for a game). But I'm not going to go so far as to say that "maybe this will be a good thing for the team," either. I don't think guys are suddenly going to start hitting w/RISP because Prince shoved Manny.
  6. McClung's road starts have been: at Wash: 5 IP/2 ER at Hous: 6IP/2 ER at Minn: 4.2 IP/5 ER at Ari: 5.1 IP/2 ER That's a 4.30 ERA over 23 IP in his 4 starts on the road. Even under MLB's liberal (and ridiculous) criteria, only one of those was a "quality start." (And one was against the Nats, for crying out loud.)
  7. So you don't think he's been pitching better lately? Fair enough. Sorry... I couldn't resist. You seem content to throw Bush statistics back at me, called them skewed, small samples, etc., etc. That's cool. But show me the stats showing that McClung is a better option on the road, and let's subject them to the same kind of analysis.
  8. Do we really need to even get into how completely distorted these stats are because you not-so-arbitrarily chose May 27 as your starting point? Come on. Run the numbers since May 12 (when he had his 1st good home start) and show the difference between home and road, and then we can talk. Or AT LEAST be intellectually honest enough to show the difference between road and home numbers in the skewed dates that you did choose. I don't even disagree with your desired result, but the method you choose to demonstrate it just looks like you're manipulating the data to prove your pre-determined conclusion. So you don't think he's been pitching better lately? Fair enough.
  9. If you go back to May 27, home and away, here is Bush's line: 2.70 ERA, .210 OBP, 40 SO, 8 BB, over 60 innings. Again, I don't necessarily think that's going to last forever; he's not going to put up those kind of numbers over the long haul. But to see that kind of roll from the your #5 starter and then take him halfway out of the rotation seems weird to me.
  10. That statement is completely untrue. Bush has had quality starts in every home start since May 12. Since that time he has had five road starts and four of them were awful.Sorry, not taking the bait this time. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I don't mean to suggest that there's a revolutionary new Dave Bush who's comparable to CC or Sheets. I really just mean that I'm more influenced by his 13 K performance on July 10 than his abysmal start at Wrigley on April 3.
  11. Totally agree with entire post, FTJ. Bush's road stats are skewed by some rotten road starts earlier in the year. He's a different pitcher now, and getting him out of this groove seems like a horrible decision to me. Plus, as you said, putting McClung in the 'pen would help mitigate (or eliminate?) the Mota problem.
  12. After the Durham trade, per the JS: "Rickie's doing fine," Yost said. Again, I can kind of understand this. You don't want to blast a young player in the media, etc. But, by the same token, do you want to give an underperforming player the impression that he's living up to your expectations?
  13. Wow, when you look at "similar batters through age 35," you get Alan Trammell, Ryne Sandberg, Craig Biggio, Barry Larkin, and Joe Morgan. Nice players, all. (Just parenthetically, does anyone remember Morgan finishing out his career in Houston, Philly, SF, and Oakland? I missed that completely in the early 1980's.)
  14. Solid, if unspectacular, move. (When Durham gets hot, he can really rake. I'm not entirely sure how much "hot" he has left, of course.) Now, about that bullpen help....
  15. Cubs fans probably should be no more or less nervous (or hopeful) than Brewer or Card fans. They do have a cushion (albeit a shrinking one). Part of me hopes that the Brewers don't really catch and pass the Cubs until September, so that they don't have the chance to rebound from the fan-and-media frenzy that is sure to follow if they fall out of first place. If that happens in early August, they could have time to right the ship.
  16. I can't speak from personal experience as it relates to teaching in the public schools, but, from what I know, pitchleague's advice above is right on the money.
  17. No problems here with Cameron or Kendall. They've both been as advertised at the plate, and solid defensively. (Cameron has had the misfortune of making two egregious and game-changing misplays in CF; otherwise, he's been brilliant.)
  18. Never in a billion years would I have predicted that Neil Patrick Harris' career would turn out so well. He seem destined to be another ex-child-star loser. But the guy is just hilarious (see Harold and Kumar, "How I Met Your Mother" -- which is really pretty dreadful otherwise).
  19. I have a bunch of family stuff early tonight, so this is actually a good start time for me. And, as a bonus, we won't have to watch Barry Bonds....
  20. But how will all of this impact his son's band? That's the big question.
  21. Thanks for the info, everyone. I'm hoping to avoid the drunken debauchery as much as possible. (It kind of makes me sad to think that I'm going to have to expose my son to it when he gets old enough to head over to Camp Randall.)
