  1. Hall had 18 SB in 2005, unless he's suddenly become an awful baserunner or lost a lot of his speed, I don't understand why he couldn't do that again. (and yes his 2006 numbers look pretty abysmal).
  2. Top 10 SB Teams: Angels - 89-73 Mets - 97-65 Yankees - 97-65 Devil Rays - 61-101 Dodgers - 88-74 Reds - 80-82 Nationals - 71-91 Padres - 88-74 Cubs - 66-96 Orioles - 70-92 807 - 813 .498 Winning Percentage Bottom 10 SB Teams: Red Sox - 86-76 Braves - 79-83 Rangers - 80-82 Indians - 78-84 Giants - 76-85 Cardinals- 83-78 As- 93-69 Blue Jays- 87-75 Royals -62-100 Pirates- 67-95 791 - 827 .488 Winning Percentage Summary: A team needs balance. Teams in the middle of the pack had a .500+ winning percentage. That said you can find sucessful teams in both extremes. The Brewers were in the middle of the pack last season, and with a healthy Weeks, they will probably land there again.
  3. If you look at the dates of the posts, the majority of this thread was made before Wells was signed to his extension. So that might give you a bit of a better understanding of where certain posters were coming from. Also, there is more to offensive statistics than batting average.
  4. If speed is such a huge issue, how come the World Champian St. Louis Cardinals had a leadoff hitter who had only 7 SB (6 CS) on the season? In fact they didn't even have a single player reach a dozen SB on the season! They did so well because they had guys who got on base and they let the middle of their order slug those players around. How come speed is such a huge need for us again? Because there doesn't appear to be a huge correlation between team speed and team sucess.
  5. Weeks strikes out too much for the leadoff spot? Isn't the point of a leadoff hitter to just get onbase? Weeks got onbase 36% of the time. Gross got on 38% of the time. Strikeouts don't matter when it comes to leadoff hitters (because a flyout or a groundout made with the bases empty has the same impact as a strikeout does), its all about getting onbase, and both of these players do a solid job at doing that. Speed doesn't generate runs, having players on base a lot and having people to slug them in is the best recipe for creating runs.
  6. Just thought I'd throw out a trade situation for some discussion. This isn't based on any actual trade proposal, as far as I know. Brewers offer: Ben Sheets Tony Graffaino Yankees Offer: Robinson Cano (moving Weeks to CF) Philip Hughes Mid Level Minor League Prospect Would you accept such a deal? Why or why not?
  7. Do we really have a "speed" problem? Hart is fast, Weeks is capable of 20-30 steals, Hall could probably have 15-20. Also, that package would not net us a Baldelli or Crawford. We'd have to give up Gallardo in such a deal. (I really doubt that they would want Jenkins either, since they are looking to trade away their OF depth, not add to it). Speed is perhaps one of the most overrated offensive statistics, and it doesn't change the need for a powerful lineup.
  8. Come on Reed. That is a pretty outlandish statement. Yeah, our money grubbing owner has only raised payroll levels to all time high levels. He's only doubled the payroll since he's taken over the organization. What a greedy pig. Let's cook him on a spit! I don't know who you claim is "giving him a bad rap" other than the unrealistic few on this site who somehow thought Milwaukee could afford a Zito or a Soriano. Mr A is entitled to his cut of the pie, and I'm pretty sure that he's not tucking away any more than any other owner does.
  9. That's why they should be willing to get rid of their excess depth in order to get two things, an OF (Jenkins) and a mid level prospect (Jackson). I don't understand why Jackson wouldn't be a desired player (because of pitching depth reasons), not all of the Dodger pitchers are signed long term, and Jackson could fill in for one of them in one of the next seasons. Jackson, sounds like the perfect prospect, a guy who could help them in a year or two, or am I mistaken?
  10. Considering the fact that Gallardo is one of the top prospect in the entire game, I think you are definitely overvaluing Penny (by a longshot). Jenkins and Zach Jackson should get it done.
  11. If we don't succeed in signing Schmidt (which it sounds like we won't be) and the Dodgers get him. I would definitely try to move Jenks + Jackson to the Dodgers for Penny. Our rotation with Sheets, Capuano, Penny and Bush would still be one of the best in the league.
  12. The fact that the team is willing to get into the bidding for Schmidt shows that they have a good chunk of money to use if the situation is right. And Schmidt would be a huge addition. I honestly thought he was out of the Brewer's price range (apparently not since it would be pointless for Melvin to make in offer if he was just going to lowball him). A rotation with Sheets, Schmidt, Capuano, Bush and Vargas would be unmatched in the entire National League. It would also allow us the possibility of moving Villenueva (Devil Rays?) to put the finishing touches on our lineup. I have a feeling that we'll only be able to get serious in the Schmidt sweepstakes if we can get rid of nearly all of Jenkin's, Mench's and possibly Turnbow's salaries. Together those three would make about $13M in '07. So swapping out that $13M for $15M (or so) for Schmidt wouldn't actually be adding all that much in salary in the short term (long term is a different story). The fact that the Brewers are in the Schmidt sweepstakes shows just how serious they are about making this season the year we take a huge step forward.
  13. Counsell can't be traded until June 1st. So, I don't see any deal involving him.
  14. You're right. I thought with the humidor that Coors would have become more of an average offensive ballpark, but a look at ESPN for park factors shows its still #2 in the MLB behind Great American Ballpark. So what exactly is this whole fuss about the humidor all about again? Ok that trims down what I feel would be a fair return for Hall even more. Vlad Guererro, Jason Bay and Manny Rameriez are the only three OF I would trade Hall for. Bay would make the most sense of those three, I think. Since he has an OPS of 900+ on the road and at home. He has an OPS of 900+ against both righties and lefties. And finally he's mashed at Milller Park to an OPS of 1.491 (in a relatively small sample). Hall + Jenkins for Bay should be fair enough, with a possible prospect being added on one side or the other.
  15. Yo, Braun, Jackson and Gross and I'm guessing you would be pretty close to a deal for Cabrera alone, it would probably take more to get the pitcher thrown in as well. Although, I don't like what that move would do to our pitching depth.
  16. I think it would take, at the very least, Gallardo, Braun and Rogers, possibly more.
  17. I don't see why Holliday would be untouchable, not when they have Garret Atkins and his sub .600 OPS at SS. As I pointed out in an earlier post, trading Holliday for Hall/Jenkins would actually dramatically improve the Rockie offense. And since Hall and Holliday are at a similar point in their careers (entering the arby years), a swap of those two would seem to be the best kind of move for both teams, since both are in the midst of a youth movement. I guess, I just think Hall's numbers at SS, are nearly as valuable if not more valuable than Holliday's in left. That stats seem to support me, but maybe I'm being unrealistic and have my BrewCrew rose colored glasses on.
  18. You won't get Holliday for that rag tag bunch. No way, no how. Holliday has three years of arby left, if I'm not mistaken. A swap of him and Hall would work well for both teams, as I showed on the previous page and because both of them have a few years of arbitration left. Hall is probably the only player we have (other than Sheets) who could land us Holliday, and since we're going to have Hall in LF anyway, we might as well have the better LF if we can get one. You might get Wells with that group, but that is a lot to give up for a one year fix in CF, and I just don't see Well's contract situation as being something we're realistically capable of.
  19. Sorry, I guess my topic was a little vague.
  20. It would make sense to trade Hall, but the return would have to be pretty big. But if we'd trade Hall I would want one of the following players: Miguel Cabrera, Jason Bay, Matt Holiday, Mann Ramirez, or Vlad Guerrero. We need a big bat in the OF, and while Bill Hall is one of the best bats at SS, he's only above average when we move him to the OF. A few of these teams are looking for SS this offseason or could use one. The Rockies, Pirates, and Red Sox are all in rough shape at the Shortstop position. Acquiring Bill Hall would make sense for them because having Hall's bat at Short along with an average player out in left would be a gain in production over having the above average LF and no production out of SS. Of that list, I want Matt Holiday. I'd even include Jenkins and Miller/Rivera along with Hall in order to even up the trade a bit. So here it is, my proposal: Bill Hall, Geoff Jenkins, Damien Miller for Matt Holiday For comparison: Matt Holiday's 2006 Stats: .326/.387/.586 OPS of .973 Bill Hall's 2006 Stats: .270/.345/.553 OPS of .899 In order for their starting offense to actually improve from last season, they would need their new LF to post a only .074 OPS points better than the .598 that Barmes put up at SS last season - AKA an OPS of .672, and Jenkins could easily surpass that, so the trade would be fair for both teams.
  21. He's only 31, and has two years of arbitration as you mentioned. Basically, the way I see it, if we moved both Braun and Hall to the OF and brought in Ensberg, we could worry about the future 3B situation a year or two down the road when he approaches Free Agency. A lot can happen in two years.
  22. What if the Brewers traded for a thirdbaseman (Ensberg) and moved both Hall and Braun to the OF? I would be happy with that kind of move. I have heard over the past season how Braun may have the speed and athleticism to play center. Koskie + Turnbow for Ensberg? And adding Ensberg for those two would come at about an equal price salary wise. Plus the Astros seem eager to move him, so the above deal would probably be enough. Lineup: 1. Hart RF 2. Weeks 2nd 3. Ensberg 3rd 4. Fielder 1st 5. Hall LF 6. Braun CF 7. Estrada C 8. Hardy SS (better subject -TC)
  23. I still don't think the Cubs will get him. Schmidt already said he'd like to go to either San Francisco or Seattle. He has been pretty serious about staying on the West Coast and I haven't heard anything about him changing his mind. That said, money talks too and if the Cubs throw enough at him who knows what could happen.
  24. They have Martin and Hall, they should be fine at Catcher.
  25. Gotta try my hand at this again since we've made our last trade. Moves: Trade Jenkins, Jackson and Heether for Penny Trade Turnbow + Miller for Crisp Trade Mench for Rodrigo Lopez Trade Clark for Byhung Kim Rotation: Total: $21.268 M Sheets - $10 M Capuano - $3 M Penny - $7.5 M Bush - $388 K Villenueva - $380 K Bullpen: (top 7 will get a spot) Total: $15.49 M Cordero $5 M Capellan $380 K Kim $1.5 M Wise $1 M Sarfate $380 K Aquino $380 K Shouse $1.1 M Lopez $3 M Vargas $2.75 M Lineup: Total: $13.89 M Cf: Crisp $3.75 M C: Estrada $3 M 2nd: Weeks $500 K 1st: Fielder $380 K LF: Hall $3.5 M 3B: Koskie $2 M RF: Hart $380 K SS: Hardy $380 K Bench: Total: $3.64 M Ut: Cirillo $1 M Ut: Rottino $380 K OF: Gross $380 K OF: Cruz $1.5 M C: Rivera $380 K Total: $56.808 M This could be a pretty decent team. Adding a decent Ut player to the team would be nice, but it looks pretty solid otherwise. And while somewhat expensive, there would be a lot to choose from in the bullpen.
