  1. Oh yeah, and he let Russell Branyan go...TWICE. Branyan would have the second highest OPS on the team right now. 3TO hit a GW homerun last night as well, his 24th of the year. But, we needed to keep playing time available for Bill Hall for his third straight year of suckitude...
  2. When people ask "what could Melvin have done differently?", that question needs to be extended back further than just this past offseason. Moves Melvin made 2-3 years ago put the team into the situation they entered during the offseason, so his overall responsibility in the rotation mess is substantial. If he hadn't signed Suppan, we'd have had $12M more to use this year AND next year. He traded away Doug Davis for Estrada/Vargas, and now is stuck in the position of facing having to overpay to get a guy like Davis back. Whose fault is that? What if he had put the Gagne/Riske money towards a quality starter? He also needs to share in the responsibility of the lack of SP prospects in the system. While some of that is draft failures, starting pitching prospects can be acquired through trades as well, and Melvin has left the cupboard pretty bare in this area -- which is a significant failing IMO. There are countless different ways this team could be better, but you have to look beyond the oversimplistic "who should Melvin have signed during this particular offseason?"
  3. Well, since the post said Looper was the second of a "solid" 1-2 punch, I would take that to mean he has been performing well in that role as the #2. Outside of his win total, that's just not an accurate statement.
  4. Calling Looper a #2 this year is a pretty big stretch. He's performed more like a #4/5 in my opinion, unless you are putting a lot of stock in his W-L record.
  5. Lopez wearing uniform #3, and already got picked off in the first inning. That's two quick strikes against him...
  6. So then why did you kill him and toss him on the couch?? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. You're exactly right that it's an exhibition game, and should therefore be a show. This rule was a result of a massive overreaction to the tie in 2002. I still really don't understand why people were so upset about game ending in a tie, but the outrage and declarations that it was an "embarrassment" directly led to this silly stipulation. Nay.
  8. Can we just pretend that calling it a "softmore" slump was an astute and witty quip about the potential correlation between Prince's chubby physique and his struggles last season? I think it would make me feel better about this thread... Like others have already said, part of the reason people brought up his name (and still do) as trade bait at some point is because he likely won't sign longterm with the Brewers. Also, people weren't totally out of line to be disappointed with Fielder last year -- he showed up out of shape and upset with his contract situation, had a down year with the bat, and did in fact play very bad defense.
  9. Branyan, Frank Howard, that teen that hit a 600-foot homerun, and some type of Robocop-style Russell Branyan cyborg.
  10. The thing that was really disappointing to see, was that yesterday the Brewers crossed over into allowing more runs than they have scored. On June 1st, they were +21.
  11. Maybe I'm imagining things based on the better results, but did anybody else notice that Parra seemed to have a different look on his face today? Whereas he usually looks like a deer in headlights, today he seemed kind of angry and intense.
  12. History will not be kind to Doug Melvin. Giving up Branyan (twice) shall be viewed in the same light as Bando giving up Molitor...or the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth.
  13. Branyan tonight: 1-for-4 (HR, BB, 3K) 20th HR of the season for Branyan.
  14. I was just trying to imagine the world without Russell Branyan, and I couldn't wrap my feeble brain around the concept. It was like trying to grasp the notion of your own non-existence, or the infinite bounds of the universe. It really freaked me out.
  15. So what about having to pay Hall? Melvin should have re-signed Branyan anyway. Branyan would have come fairly cheap (especially if we'd locked him up in the middle of last year when he was on his tear), so I don't see the correlation between having to pay Hall and the ability to keep a guy like Branyan. The contract mistake had already been made. There was no sense in continuing to compound the problem by letting a talented player go in order to give the bloated-contract crap player too much playing time. As for if we could have traded Hall or whatever, it would be nice, but it shouldn't dictate how Melvin approaches the 3B situation. You seem to be under the impression that if he's not traded and we're paying him a lot, he needs a defined, prominent role on the team. He doesn't. At this point, he's garbage. Time to admit it and move on as if it's lost money (actually last offseason was probably the time). Even when we were under the impression Hall could still mash lefties, maybe he could have gotten some strict platoon starts, but that's it. And again, that would have meshed very well with re-signing Russell.
  16. Just because somebody has a guaranteed contract, doesn't mean you HAVE to play them over a far superior player though. At a certain point, Melvin's refusal to move on from Hall is just compounding the mistake.
  17. Branyan goes 1-for-5 tonight with a HR and, you guessed it, 4 strikeouts.
  18. Good grief. I'm not sure the Brewers can afford to let Parra start any more games after today. It's really too bad, because he would have been a huge asset to this team if he could have even performed like a #3/4 type starter this year. Playoff spots are decided by too small a margin to continue with this kind of performance any longer though.
  19. Every time I look at a Seattle box score, Branyan has homered. He did yesterday, and has already hit one out tonight as well. It's unreal. It's a travesty he is not playing RF right now for the Brewers.
  20. Did Bill Schroeder just say that Hall's run doesn't matter? There's still two innings after this, so getting even 1 run here would certainly still be helpful...
  21. Beautiful post; but is there photographic evidence of Branyan with a mountain man beard? I thought Corey was the mountain man. I can't find any pictures, but I definitely remember him sporting a nifty beard for awhile during his first stint with the Crew. It wasn't as shaggy as Hart's, but it didn't need to be. If Branyan doesn't shave for like 2 days, it looks more rugged than what most men grow after 2 months.
  22. Russ is now 2nd in the AL in OPS. Amazing.
  23. Now, I'm totally envisioning a scenario where a bunch of non-Branyan players hit a bunch of crappy 450-foot homeruns in the derby. The crowd is all yawning, when suddenly a helicopter emerges from overhead and lands directly on home plate. Branyan steps out with his bat, having re-grown his mountain man beard. The world ends instantly.
  24. That would be me. I supposed I should have realized this would happen...
