  1. "The Stand" was a mini-series adapted by Stephen King, and has a post-apocalyptic theme. It was made for TV, so you should be safe as far as ratings go. Only problem is that is runs like 6 hours, so it might be longer than what you're looking for. If you have that kind of time to spare with the class, it might be cool. I'm sure your class wouldn't mind being able to watch a movie every day for a week plus. hahaha.

  3. If MLB does this, they might as well just erase everything that's happened in baseball since the 80's. It would be the only fair way to do it, since we'll never truly know who did and who didn't use PED. You can't just pick and choose certain records and certain players. Either it all goes, or it all stays. Sooner or later, people are just going to have to accept that it was part of baseball for a long time, and move on...
  4. http://www.dwd.state.wi.u...g_benefit_entitlement.htm This should help answer some questions. chrisisoutrunning, the answer to your specific question is under the "COMPUTING PARTIAL UI BENEFITS FOR A WEEKLY CLAIM WHEN INCOME WAS REPORTED" section...
  5. Why is everybody so confident that Griffey and Thomas never used any performance enhancing drugs? How can you possibly have any idea? Until just a few hours ago, many of you would have said the same thing about Rodriguez. For a while now, I've just been presuming that few players, if any, were completely clean throughout their careers. I've just accepted it as being the norm during that era, and moved on.
  6. I've used TaxSlayer for the past few years. It's only $9.95 to e-file it and have it sent to the IRS, and I think it's easy as heck. My taxes are fairly simple though -- no dependents, and I just take the standard deduction with a few adjustments....
  7. Kind of an uneven episode, but I did find myself laughing pretty hard several times. Creed was amazing, as usual. The Jack Black / Cloris Leachman thing was by far the worst, most unfunny thing the show has ever done.
  8. I believe you would qualify, although it will most likely be for a low amount if you only worked 10-15 hours per week. Generally, they will look back at your highest reported earnings quarter from the past year, and use that to set your weekly benefit amount. When you file your claims each week, you will be asked to report any income you made from self-employment. The more money you make, the less they will pay you in a weekly benefit. However, it's not a dollar for dollar loss. I got laid off from a job, and my weekly benefit rate was calculated. I have a new job now that pays less than my previous job, but I can still collect some of my unemployment check each week (kind of like a supplement) depending on how much I earn. Their formula is such that the first $30 you earn don't count against your unemployment weekly amount, and then each dollar you make after that only takes away $0.67 from your unemployment check. It probably sounds confusing, but I think it's nice because this way it was actually worth it for me to take a lower paying job, rather than just staying home collecting full unemployment checks every week.
  9. It seems like companies are becoming more and more short-sighted. The obsession with short-term cost cutting has let to quality issues, with many incompetent and under-qualified people doing jobs. These companies often seem to pay for it in the long run though (see: Circuit City). I used to work for a place that was constantly losing workers because they paid like crap, and people would go elsewhere as soon as they found a new job or got a little experience. They promised raises and new pay-grades, but the pay-grades never came and the company always seemed to find a reason to not give people their raises. This company constantly had new people coming in and there were always quality issues -- but management could never figure out why. Their solution was to put up "motivational" posters, call group meetings to disparage employees, and place all of the blame at the feet of the lower-level supervisors. The company ended up losing some important clients because the clients became irate with the poor quality, which led to layoffs. It was sad and pathetic.
  10. Adding vinegar to the baking soda will cause it to react and to fizz up real nice, and that concoction will help remove build-up in drains. Like others have said, wash it all down with hot water eventually...
  11. Ned Yost disagrees. In fact, his best value is intentionally walking lefties and facing righties. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif Yeah, and look how well that worked out for him!
  12. I agree that I would like to see Shouse back for 2009. However, you seem to be contradicting yourself somewhat. On one hand, you're saying you get sick when you see a reliever come on to face one lefty -- but then you say Shouse is a "must keep" player. Shouse's primary value is coming into the game to face one or two tough lefties...
  13. Dead man is a jockey, participating in a horse race. About 150 feet out of the gates, he was thrown from his horse, at which time he either broke his neck or was trampled to death.
  14. Was the stick used to hit a horse? Did the man fall from a horse?
  15. Is the stick a walking-stick because he is blind?
  16. Was the victim having an affair with the fortune teller's wife? Did the victim harm the fortune teller's wife in some manner? Was the bridge rigged with some type of explosives? Did the victim know they had received the 'death card'? Did the victim die from: Blunt bodily trauma? Fire/smoke? Electrical shock?
  17. That brought a tear to this man's eye. I'd love a copy as well...
  18. Did the victim's car ever have to cross, or drive on, a bridge? If so, was there something about the bridge that would make it dangerous for a car? Was the bridge the place where the accident/death occurred? Was the victim led into oncoming traffic?
  19. Is the murderer the fortune teller who uses the tarot card?
  20. Was the card made of paper/cardstock? Was the card made of plastic?
  21. I have a special request (if it's too time consuming, I understand). Menotti, is there anyway you could keep track of the 'yes' answers and include them at the top of your responses, and then bold the new answers, or something like that? Sort of a running log to make it easier to remember what information we have. e.g. - Man was found dead with a map and a card. - Man was murdered - Map was hand-drawn - etc. Just an idea...
  22. For a while, there were different ROMs available that did just that. It had the original game engine with updated teams and players. I remember playing the 2003 version with Favre and Ahman Green and such. It was sweet. They also made one with all-time teams. Also sweet. I can't remember what the website was for download though, and I'm not sure if they still do it.
  23. Good link. So, according to that, the Brewers reasonable spending amount should be about $1.8 M per marginal win added (as opposed to the higher league-wide number, which is inflated by the higher market teams). Even using that number, most of the Brewer (position player) contracts still look pretty good. Not so sure the same could have been said about some of the pitchers (I'm looking at you Suppan and Gagne), but the value stat isn't available for pitching that I can find.
  24. According to this new metric, the Brewers should have paid Ben Sheets $5.2 million in 2008 NOT to bat.... Haha. The only problem I see with this is that is doesn't take into account the fact that money value is different for every team. I wonder if this could be converted to something like *% value of team's overall salary*, or something along those lines, seeing as how if the Brewers paid $10M for a guy, he would need to be one of the best on the team as that would account for like 15 % of the total payroll -- whereas if the Yankees pay $10M, they wouldn't necessarirly require as much production from that player since it's not as big of a chunk of their payroll.
  25. Sorry to keep asking questions, but do the game "patches" include roster updates? Like, would you have to wait until the new version comes out to have Sabathia be on the Yankees roster by default, or can you get everything up-to-date with OOTP 9's latest patch?
