  1. Were his injuries usually the result of having to play 3B though? I don't really remember. I figured it could just as easily have been the result of swinging the bat.
  2. Here are a couple of stats, not including tonight's dominating (once again) performance by the bullpen. Brewer relievers: - Lead the MLB in OPS against at .615, with the next best team being Boston with a .666 OPS against - Lead the NL in BA against, allowing an opponent average of .208 - Are 2nd in the NL in K/BB, with a 2.21 ratio Going into the season, I think a lot of us had big questions about the bullpen. So far though, they have been outstanding -- so I think Melvin, Macha, and Castro deserve a lot of credit for bringing in (and keeping vs releasing) the guys they did, and utilizing them in situations that are helping them succeed.
  3. Bump! Branyan's line right now is .318/.420/.607/1.027 -- in 173 ab's. Just for funsies, can anybody figure out how much that would have helped the Brewers (in wins) over the craptastic production we've actually gotten at 3B? It still irks me quite a bit that Branyan could be on this team, and Gamel could be getting more work in at AAA.
  4. I was just reading some speculation that it wasn't actually a suicide, but rather an accident. He was found naked, so I imagine he was trying to pull of the old erotic asphyxiation trick. Kind of an embarrassing way to go, unfortunately...
  5. I agree. On a similar note, I also hope it doesn't turn into a "He's young! He'll be fine! Stop freaking out! The sky isn't falling, you jerk!!" thread either, because anybody with any sense can see that is not the premise of the original post...
  6. Joel Goddard was the funniest person on Late Night. It will be tough for them to come up with anything as funny as the stuff involving Joel. I think Conan will do fine. I'm sure part of the reason NBC was so eager to make the switch is that they probably really want a younger audience than what Leno was getting. It sucks that Conan will most likely have to water down his act somewhat, but he's still a funny and quick-witted personality.
  7. (title should be read in a Jerry Seinfeld voice) Seriously though -- what gives? Did he pitch too many innings last year? Is he a head-case? It's June now, and his ERA is 6.75. His WHIP is 1.83. That's bad. Obviously, he deserves (and will get) more time to hopefully figure it out, but I think even the more conservative predictions would have had his progress far beyond what it currently is. By all accounts he has great stuff, and these struggles seem to be beyond any expected growing pains. It's really frustrating to watch.
  8. Honestly, I really can't believe this guy still has a job. He has to be gone after tonight, right??...
  9. 4 @ FLA (2-2) 3 @ATL (1-2) 3 vs COL (2-1) 3 vs CWS (1-2) 3 @ CLE (2-1) 3 @ DET (0-3) 3 vs MIN (1-2) 3 vs SF (2-1) 3 vs NYM (1-2) 12 - 16 Braun: 3 HR Fielder: 4 HR Cameron: 3 HR = 10 HRs
  10. I think he looks like Paul O'Neill when he's up to bat.
  11. Does Todd Coffey always have the Ultimate Warrior's theme playing when he comes in to pitch??
  12. Brooks should be one of those guys the Brewers should put on staff, basically just to hang out around the stadium (a la Gorman Thomas and Johnny Logan).
  13. I'm a little embarrassed I don't know this, but do partially-played games that get postponed start over? Cause I thought the Brewers were down 2-0 on Friday, and for some reason I always thought that the game picks up where it left off. Can anybody provide clarification on this?
  14. As always, the condescension is much appreciated. To be fair though, Suppan has met the standards I laid out for remaining in the rotation, so in some ways I feel the thread premise has actually been justified. I'm glad he's pitched well recently, and I still don't think simply posing the question of "how well does he need to perform to keep his job" was as much of a crazy overreaction as some of you want to make it out to be. Carry on though. Don't let the reality of what the thread was actually about get in the way of your need to gloat.
  15. I really don't understand this move. I mean, we have a perfectly good DH in Tony Gwynn Jr. to avoid using Gamel's service time...
  16. It's not about visible tiredness, or reading minds. It's about common sense. Kendall caught 149 games last year, the most in the majors in quite some time -- and he was 34-years-old! If it's something no other team is doing (or done for years), there's probably a reason why. Guys get worn down, especially catchers. You can say that a half season worth of stats is meaningless, but everything we know about baseball and the human body would indicate that he was playing way too much for his age. It's the managers job to have discretion and not just say "he says he can play so I'll let him play!" What if Gallardo said he could make starts the rest of the season on two days rest? Should the Brewers just let him? No, because history, precedent, and common sense indicate it would be stupid. If it was up to the players, they'd all pencil themselves in the lineup everyday. That's why you don't let them run the team...
  17. The reason the franchise became competitive during his tenure was because of the talent level -- not anything he did. If the talent level had remained the same as the 2003 squad, the team would have remained in the cellar. You're examining results, when you should be examining the process and whether or not it is fundamentally sound. Having Gwynn in the lineup, and not utilizing his best attribute (defense) is just one example that demonstrates Ned too often made decisions that did not optimize the team's chance for success. Mench over Jenkins to face Dempster, and walking Howard to have Shouse face Burrell last year was another. Just because the DH Gwynn instance may not have "cost us the game" doesn't make Yost's managerial philosophies any less flawed.
  18. Lasik maybe? As for Counsell, he also did modify his stance quite a bit. The JS touched on it today. I'm sure that doesn't fully explain the huge gap in his actual vs projected numbers, but hopefully it's something that can continue to help him be less crappy than he has been the past few years.
  19. Yep. That was the article I was looking for. My favorite quip is this one, which really sums things up: To me, the discussion begins and ends with something like this. He had a pattern of doing things like this, it just took the high importance of this playoff chase game to finally draw enough people's attention. You simply can't have somebody, with that poor of an understanding of simple logic, calling the shots for an MLB team.
  20. Does anybody have handy, that poignant quote from last year about the Shouse/Howard/Burrell move that sealed Ned's fate last year in Philadelphia?
  21. If Bernie Madoff wanted your money to make an investment, would you be more wary than with somebody else? If Chris Brown wanted to take your daughter on a date, would you be more reluctant than if it was the nice guy that lives down the street? Does that show some kind of unfair personal bias on your part? No. It's just a sound discretionary judgment based on these people's history and reputations. Of course people were more critical of moves Yost made during his last few years, because he had acted like a complete ignoramus so many times before. Is it wrong to consider somebody's past actions in determining how much you trust their judgment? Of course not. Nobody ever said Macha wasn't going to make questionable moves. However, for now he has the benefit of the doubt because he hasn't yet flushed it down the crapper. With Yost, head-scratchers became such a pattern that yes, he had lost the benefit of the doubt in many fans' eyes. So don't act like it's an unfair double standard, because Yost earned his poor reputation.
  22. Meh. It's Bob Brenly. I'd find eating fromunda cheese preferable to spending any time around that guy.
  23. So, will Ramirez now be among the always-getting-longer list of players that the buffoonish sportswriters will block from entering the Hall of Fame? At this rate, they may as well just stop inducting players altogether. If players like Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Roger Clemens aren't in there to represent this era, then there is no point because the best players aren't being showcased. I mean really, is baseball going to induct David Eckstein and Craig Counsell into the HOF to represent the best "clean" players of this era?...
  24. I miss him so much. Oh, the pain...
  25. Not really. You seem to be back-pedaling on your original stance that there is nothing wrong with him -- that the injury concern was just some figment of our imaginations. Braun has confirmed that the injury exists and is still bothering him. Seems like that pretty clearly means that the injury isn't and never was "phantom," but is indeed very real.
