  1. Prince was too fat last year. He must have even thought so himself, because he worked all off-season to slim down.
  2. Well, the pilot episode just aired. I wasn't very impressed. It seems like it's lacking any real comedic direction. Is it supposed to be a satire about local government? Cause if it is, I don't think it's very poignant OR funny. Perhaps we are just supposed to be laughing at the main character, who is mildly incompetent and thinks her job is more important than it really is. Unfortunately, Amy Poehler's character just seems like a poor-man's Michael Scott -- but not close to as funny. Obviously, I'll need to give it some more episodes to see what they are trying to do, but I just don't see much potential from the first episode.
  3. Herald Times Reporter story My hometown, Manitowoc, has just elected 22-year-old Justin Nickels to be their new mayor. It's a pretty crazy story, especially since his campaign advisor is a good friend of mine, and my former college roommate. There was a link to the story on the Drudge Report today, so I guess it's more noteworthy than I had even realized. Also of note, La Crosse elected a 25-year-old mayor to run their city of over 50,000. It's a brave new world we live in...
  4. That's a very good point. I guess I should clarify that I meant to use his ERA as a quick indicator of performance, not an end-all stat. If he is consistently pitching poorly enough to legitimately sport an ERA above 5 after ten or so games, I'd like to see somebody else given a chance. If Soup is pitching well, and his ERA is skewed by one or two bad starts and/or some bad luck, then it wouldn't apply. Perhaps quality starts would be a good indicator to look at too? Giving him a mulligan for yesterday's performance, I'm hoping that over his next ten starts, Suppan is able to give the team at least four quality starts. If he can't do that, time for somebody else to get a chance -- so that is my revised leash.
  5. How can you be so sure about that? McClung pitched 105 innings last season, and was actually quite a bit better than Suppan. <span style="text-decoration:underline">ERA</span> <span style="text-decoration:underline">WHIP</span> <span style="text-decoration:underline">K/9</span> Suppan 4.96 1.54 4.56 McClung 4.02 1.41 7.43
  6. I'm trying to figure out what the threshold should be for Suppan this year, before a move to long-relief should be strongly considered. I realize he's going to get much more slack than most guys because of his contract, but if he makes it to start #10 or so, and has an ERA above 5.00, at that point I really think the team has to try somebody else. Of course, this all depends on the health of the rest of the starting rotation, but if Gallardo/Parra/Bush/Looper stay healthy, I think that 5th spot should be used on of the younger guys with more upside -- guys that can potentially get a few strikeouts. Suppan has not really even done a good job of eating up innings the past year, which is supposed to be his big selling point. So, that's my cutoff -- an ERA over 5.00 after 10 starts, and I think it's time to pull the plug.
  7. 1. I will not let Jeff Suppan ruin my year 2. If the Yankees win the World Series, I will try not to view it as a microcosm of the unfairness of life
  8. at SF - 3 games-- I think they'll go 1-2 Chi - 3 game-- I think they'll go 1-2 Cin - 3 games-- I think they'll go 2-1 at NY- 3 games-- I think they'll go 1-2 at Phi - 3 games-- I think they'll go 0-3 at Hou - 3 games-- I think they'll go 2-1 Pit - 3 games-- I think they'll go 2-1 AZ- 1 game-- I think they'll go 1-0 Total: 10-12
  9. Hard to disagree with anything he said. By all accounts the place is a total dump. If Yankee Stadium can be replaced, so can Wrigley. The Cubs never even won anything there, so Yankee stadium is arguably more historic. And to keep the pea-brain, nostalgic fans pacified, they could install ivy and troughs at the new facility.
  10. Yeah, and give 25% less effort than you were giving before. Two can play that game...
  11. I actually worked for a parks department for several summers while I was in college, so I hope I end up having a special appreciation for it! I also have a thing for Rashida Jones.
  12. This story is very strange. They are saying it's anxiety disorder, but then he's talking about "something in his blood." As the article notes, there are no blood tests for anxiety disorder. There is nothing in the article that really adds up with Willis actually exhibiting symptoms of the disorder. What Zack Greinke went through seemed to be much more consistent with what panic/anxiety disorder actually is.
  13. Yeah, but there's a big difference between doing something out of necessity vs because you want to. Just waking up early in the morning when you have no other choice doesn't really make somebody a morning person per say. Many people prefer to get up very early everyday because that's what their body wants. I get up early to go to work every single weekday, but I still hate getting up early so I wouldn't consider myself a morning person. I would say, because of your statement that you'd prefer to sleep in, that you're not actually a morning person either, but rather somebody who does it out of necessity. Anybody is physically capable of getting up early. I think what the original poster is looking for are ways that it can come more naturally and without the discomfort.
  14. Great post, MJLiverock. Pretty much summed up my feelings exactly. It's always a nice feeling to know that there are other people that are going through the same things you are... For whatever reason, there seems to be a real societal stigma with people who prefer to sleep late, even if they are not actually spending more time sleeping than the person who gets up at 5 in the morning. It seems to be especially true in Wisconsin. If you go out at 9:30pm, everything is dead, even in the larger cities. And many people seem to think/imply that you are lazy if you sleep past 8am. "You're sleeping your life away! There's soooo much you could be doing right now!" Like MJ said, what difference should it make if I'd rather do things at night? That's how my body tells me to live, and it doesn't mean I'm lazy.
  15. Unfortunately, I think either you're a morning person or you're not. I've tried everything (caffeine, cool showers, vitamin B, going to bed really early, etc.), but it doesn't make much of a difference. I am always more energetic and focused at 8pm than 8am. I feel absolutely awful when I wake up, and pretty much throughout the morning. This makes working first shift very difficult. I'm much more productive after lunchtime than before lunchtime. I think it's really hard, because I feel like I'm not in sync with the rest of the world. edit: There is a legit clinical term for having these problems. Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome
  16. Sometimes I'm surprised Tom hasn't been fired. Badger Blogger fiasco last year. Repeated warnings from his superiors to stop childish bickering, and set aside the condescending tone he takes with most readers. As was mentioned, he vowed last year to stay out of the comments section, but he obviously can't help himself from jumping down in the mud. Oh yeah, and he rarely has anything insightful to say. He constantly lapped up the meaningless "stats" and "knowledge" Ned Yost would spoon-feed him, and call it analysis. In addition to all of this, he continues to antagonize the JS customers. Enough is enough with this guy. He's unprofessional, unknowledgeable, uninspired, and uninteresting.
  17. I missed the first episode, but watched it tonight. I thought he was awful. The monologue was incredibly lame, Fallon himself is spastic and unfunny, and the bits were uninspired. I grew up watching Conan in that slot for the past 15 years, and will miss him greatly hosting Late Night. I don't think he'll be the same at all hosting The Tonight Show. Fallon isn't going to do much to make me miss Conan less. I was curious to see what others thought...
  18. How did Branyan get lumped in with those bums? Also, I kind of liked Ben Grieve. Replace those two with Antone Williamson and David Hulse, and find a spot in the starting rotation for Rafael Roque (he did start an opening day game for the Brewers afterall). Then you'll really be onto something...
  19. I'm not hoping for injuries. For whatever reason, when I envision the upcoming Brewers season, I think it's going to be a disappointing step backward from last year, and that's just what my gut tells me. If I made a conscious effort to force optimism into my prediction, it wouldn't be my real prediction, now would it? I just expect that this team isn't going to get some of the lucky breaks they got last year, and I think the relative health of everybody not named Gallardo or Sheets was pretty lucky. Given the lack of depth in several areas, I think even a few poorly placed injuries could really bring the team down. Again though, this is just a gut feeling on my part. I know people want to see every single comment backed up with supportive evidence, but let's face it -- during the course of a baseball season, luck and chance play a huge role, and I was merely throwing out my own guess at how the "ball will bounce" this year for the Crew. I really think you're looking into this far too much. Nobody else is required to share my pessimism, so I can never figure out why it bothers people so much...
  20. I don't know. Maybe (hopefully) I'll end up being wrong, but either way it's just a guess. Kendall is old. Prince if fat. Weeks always has trouble with his hands/wrists. Hall just got hurt. Cameron is old. Trot Nixon is old, and hasn't played much ball lately. Parra pitched more than he should have last year. Gallardo missed most of last year, but will still be counted on to pitch deep into games. Hoffman is 41-years-old. Riske was hurt much of last year. Gagne has had all kinds of arm issues. I just think they could have trouble staying healthy enough to reach their full potential. I also think any injury will be extra detrimental to the Brewers, because they don't have a lot of depth. There's nothing more to it than that. Sorry if that upsets you for some reason. Next time I'll make sure to ask the players for their complete medical records, off-season workout regimens, and permission to give them head-to-toe physicals before I make an off-handed, throwaway guess on a message board.
  21. 79-83 Pretty average team. Personally, I feel they were pretty fortunate to win 90 games last year (Pythagorean had them at 87 wins). I really don't think the defense is gonna be very good, and this certainly won't help a mediocre starting staff. The offense still only has one left-handed hitter, they don't get on base enough, and they will most likely continue to struggle with situational hitting -- striking out way too much. I expect very poor production from Kendall and whomever is playing 3B. If Gamel is called up, his defense will probably negate his offensive contributions. In my opinion, the tipping point for this team is going to be the performance of Weeks, Hall, Parra, and Bush. Of that group, Parra is the only one I have any faith in, and with him I have some concerns about him breaking down come mid-August. While Macha figures to be a really nice upgrade from Yost, I also get the feeling the injury bug could strike this year. If Gallardo misses any time, the pitching staff is really in trouble. I also think losing Shouse is going to hurt more than most people anticipate.
  22. - colbyjack is probably my favorite overall poster - Anytime I see rluzinski made a post, I will take time to read it - dadofandrew is (was?) hilarious, albeit completely unintentionally... - Fatter than Joey was my favorite ally during the anti-Yost movement, and from what I recall was one of a handful that was fully aware and adamant of Yost's awfulness very early on... - GenoSeligPrieb is a classic fave, although he doesn't seem to post much anymore - As far as unbridled pessimism goes, xisxisxis was great, although again, doesn't appear much anymore
  23. I wonder what his cousin thinks about A-Rod throwing his identity out there like that. Maybe I'm missing something, but doesn't this pretty much make A-Rod a rat?
  24. Couldn't find if this was posted anywhere else, but I just read in a foxsports.com column today that ESPN suspended Scott Van Pelt for putting some of the blame on the commish and ownership for the PED problem? I apologize if this is old news, but just another reason to not waste your time with ESPN...
