  1. Yes, it will have to be a Veterans Committee vote at this point, the writers passed on him immediately. I think Ted has a good chance of being elected by his peers, he seems to be very well respected by those who played with and against him.
  2. Exactly, Peavey, my reaction to that comment is more about Salome than anything else. Has he slipped that far in Melvin's eyes? That's the part that surprised me.
  3. The team has told Vinny to go to Nashville and show them that he can be their next starting catcher. I think it's a very interesting move, and I'd love to see him succeed. The comment about "best catching prospect" is an eye opener, I wonder if he means he's the closest to the major leagues, or if he really thinks Vinny is his most talented option? http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/21/rottino-on-plan-to-be-no-1-catcher.aspx
  4. 1. Luis Pena takes over as closer for the second half of the season. 2. Brewers have two players voted to start in All-Star game as Earth temporarily leaves its axis. 3. Brewers make the playoffs, as they have the best record in the NL, from Cameron's first game to the end of the season.
  5. Completely reprehensible. Two days before Hench posted that, Baldelli held a press conference, announcing that he has a career-threatening, and potentially life-threatening illness. Either Hench is a heartless loser, which Fox Sports should cut ties with immediately, or the editor who sat on this, then posted it anyway, is an idiot who should be held accountable. Is there humor in this? Get a life, Hench.
  6. Pedro, you are just amazing.
  7. I'm in a real dogfight to start off, my biz partner is 16 for 16, I'm 15 for 16, missing on USC. Love the effort by the Badgers, great job keeping the score down tonight.
  8. So says PECOTA. That's a huge jump in a year, but they have enough young talent to fit two teams in the top ten farm systems right now. I'll say they have their best season to date, but I don't think I buy into this much improvement until next year. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/02/26/leap.year0303/index.html?eref=si_mlb
  9. The Rays face an interesting decision with Longoria. I think at this point I'd keep him to start the season, but that's easy for me to say. link
  10. Seems like a good deal for the Cards, it includes two option years. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3303562
  11. I don't think this is a deal either team would pursue right now. The Brewers think Weeks' issue was his wrist, which they believe is behind him now, this isn't the time to let him go. Baltimore has multiple holes to fill, my guess is, they'd prefer a deal that nets them multiple players to a deal like this one. I also think that if another organization dealt for Weeks, they'd move him off second base immediately.
  12. I really don't know a lot about this player, but he intrigues me. Alex will be 21 in June, I assume he'll open the season at Brevard County, what can you tell me about him? Does Alex project as a starter, or is his best shot at MLB in the bullpen? Baseball America tells me he throws hard, but I don't see a lot of Ks, is that because he lacks secondary pitches?
  13. Suppose it's July, Cain is rolling, and the Brewers need to plug a hole in the rotation to make a run this year. The Giants say "LaPorta, and Escobar for Cain." That's just an example, the names could wind up being different, but that's the sort of thing I could see happening before the Brewers let go of Corey Hart right now.
  14. It's too bad about Capuano, I wonder if he's been feeling this, or if it just happened today? I'm glad the Brewers didn't just dump a pitcher somewhere, that's never a good idea. It'll be interesting to see how the team manages the IP of both Villanueva and Parra this year, I expect a lot of shuffling over the first half of the season. It's too bad everyone's not ready to go 200 IP, but at least the team has more than 5 arms to pick from.
  15. Signing old, overpaid players for years on end always ends the same way. For the Giants, the time is now. Some Giants scouts have handed out a sheet with close to a dozen players that are available, including Randy Winn, Dave Roberts, Steve Kline, Ray Durham, Rich Aurilia and others. -Peter Gammons
  16. 1. The Angels have told teams Willits is not available. 2. Escobar is also out until at least mid-May, this is shaping up to be a team that might not have a choice but to make a move.
  17. From the sounds of this article, their staff is basically a mess right now. Sidney Ponson....'nuff said? http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/031508dnsporangbriefs.3190414.html
  18. I just wanted to thank Pedro for doing this again this season. I won a drawing last year - these are excellent seats, and he's a fun guy to sit next to. Pedro, your generosity is most impressive, thank you for sharing the wealth! -Todd
  19. Are we certain that Capuano and Bush would have to clear waivers? Yost is talking like two guys are going out, no matter what, and he doesn't know yet which two it'll be. He doesn't give any mention to the possibility of waivers. "I'm going to have two guys go to the Minor Leagues who are big league pitchers," Yost said. "I don't know who they are going to be. For me, Parra, Villanueva, Vargas, Bush, Capuano are big leaguers. "I don't have any sense who it is yet. But that's the way that it's probably going to be. I'm trying to figure out the best way for our organization and our team. That's what happens when you get into a championship situation." First round of cuts yields no surprises
  20. By the time April is over, the Brewers will have played 27 games. Mike Cameron will miss most of those games, Yovanni Gallardo seems a safe bet to miss the first half of those games. The home/road splits are basically even, with 13 home games and 14 road games, but those road games include 5 in Chicago, and three in New York. (By the way, whoever decided the Brewers and Cubs should live in Wrigley in April, then play in Milwaukee in late July....should be fired). Twelve of the first eighteen are on the road, which may translate to a slow start this time around. I'd like to hear some April projections, what do you think will happen? April Breakdown... Road Games 5 at Chicago, start the month and end the month 3 at New York 3 at St Louis 3 at Cincinnati Home Games 3 San Francisco 3 Cincinnati 2 St Louis 2 Philadelphia 3 Florida
  21. He's finally found a home...so much for the 4 or 5 year deal he was demanding in December. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3291978
  22. I'm glad someone recognized the potential of this bullpen, because it is very real. It's true, the Brewers will have an excellent bullpen this season if the guys they've assembled stay healthy and pitch to their proven abilities. Even so, a fair person has to point out the possibility of disappointment. A lot of these guys have high mileage on their arms, and most of them are coming off down, or at least inconsistent seasons, which is why they were available in the first place. I like the approach Doug Melvin took in assembling this bullpen, he did bring in several veterans who have had proven success in the big leagues, and he brought in enough of them to cushion the blow if one guy falls apart - that makes a lot of sense to me. With the talent on hand, I do think the Brewers' bullpen will be better than most teams, making it possible to crack the top ten. Overall, with the scratches and dents these guys have, I expect at least one total flop, and most likely too many white knuckle evenings to rank them in the top five.
  23. This is a sad story, Rocco's in trouble. I don't know if his doctors will be able to help him or not, but this goes well beyond his future in baseball.
  24. DD, the thing is, he really isn't thumping his chest in my opinion, he's just saying he'll make teams pay if they pitch around Fielder. The next thing he said in that interview is that the lineup has a lot of great hitters, implying that pitching around someone will do you no good. I understand your point, and I certainly don't want to see him flip out into the Sheffield Zone, but so far I see this as a very positive thing. He just knows he can do it.
