  1. The 17 votes is the part I've never understood. Knowing how much the writers favor the big home run guys, I'm not surprised they didn't elect Ted, but to completely disregard him just makes no sense to me. As I stated earlier in this thread, there are lots of former Brewers and Cardinals on the Veterans Committee, assuming they still are when Ted is eligible, I think Ted will be seriously considered by that group.
  2. Votes are still coming in consistently, Raines is at 70%. If you're opposed to Raines' election, please tell us why.
  3. Have to disagree on Torre. I think Simmons was better in the first place, and Joe played a good portion of his career at third base. Great post though.
  4. Bando1234 mentioned a comparison to Gary Carter, if you read back through this thread, you'll see I compared Simmons to a group of HOF catchers, Carter was in the group. If you were asking about a defensive comparison between Carter and Simmons, I do not have those numbers, offensively, per season, here they are........ R Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 72 148 26 2 23 86 3 .262 .774 Carter 71 163 32 3 16 92 1 .285 .785 Simmons Offensively, this is not close. Simmons is all over Carter, with the exception of home runs. Homers are the glamor stat, Carter played on a World Series winner in New York, the writers barely gave Simmons a look. Yes, Carter hit more home runs than Simmons, but look at the total extra base hits- 51 per year, for both players.........Simmons had a much higher average, a better OPS, and produced more runs for his team.
  5. Thanks John Briggs for making a case for the "no" side. At the moment, Raines is right on the edge of 75% yes in the poll. We need more total votes, but it's obvious Tim has good support among Brewerfans, at least the .net variety. I have to agree with those of you who pointed out how dominant Raines was as a leadoff hitter. The 80's had three all-world leadoff guys, Henderson, Molitor and Raines. Rickey made it hard to notice anyone else, Molitor had the hitting streak and two World Series appearances.........Raines had the Expos, and collusion. I know I hadn't realized how well he stacked up against other leadoff types of recent years, but I can say for certain I'd take him over Lou Brock in a blink.
  6. I'm with Huntsville on this one. No one has admitted to voting no in this thread, but the vote stands at 10-6..........why?
  7. Voting in the Raines poll stands at 8 votes yes, 5 votes no........Tim's got a shot at 75% with this group.........keep the arguments coming!
  8. Average career OBP for control group players....... .368 Raines......... .385 Make sure you vote in the polls forum. Thanks.
  9. Great point Jacob............. Raines was indeed successful on 84% of his steal attempts Control group 79%
  10. Mexican Weez, there is indeed a poll.
  11. Ok Brewerfans, Raines is up, what say you? I've gotten lots of very positive emails from staff and site members, thanks so much to all of you. Hope you enjoy the article! -Todd
  12. With the inclusion of Manny and A-Rod this season, 40 players have hit 400 or more home runs in their career. Of these, there are only three eligible players who have not been elected to the Hall of Fame. They are, Dave Kingman, Dawson and Darrell Evans.
  13. Hi snuffzilla, thanks for your response. I don't mean to say the Speed/Power number should automatically put a guy in or keep a guy out of the Hall of Fame. What I do mean to say is, if a guy's career totals are up there, if he's good enough to seriously consider, that's a stat that can help make the difference in his favor. No, Dawson didn't get to 3000 hits or 500 home runs, so he needs something to make his case. To me, the 400 homers, 300 steals and outstanding defense make that case for him. Reggie had to hit 500 homers to get in, he was weak fielder who hit .262 for his career, with more strikeouts than anyone in history. Wade Boggs had to get 3000 hits because he offered no speed or power. Dawson didn't do enough of any one thing to get into the Hall, but he did everything at a high level for a long time, he was a complete player who's greatness should not be overlooked.
  14. Looks like Andre missed with this crowd too. We're at 0 for 4 right now, although the polls are still in place if you'd like to vote. Does anyone have anything to add on Dawson?
  15. Good points Greg and Brett. I try not to use things that are chosen subjectively, like MVP's, All Star appearances etc, when evaluating a player's career. To me, the best way is to look at the numbers and compare that player to his peers. I do mention the awards, etc, because I do think they have at least some meaning, and I know a lot of fans place a great deal of value in that information. I don't mean to say Dawson should be in just because of the power/speed number, I do mean to say that's a great indicator of the productive, versatile player that he was over a long career. I realize Dawson's career OBP was awful, if there is a stat that would make me vote no automatically, it's that one. I still think he did enough, he fielded at a high level, he hit for power and he ran well enough for me. I'm with those of you who have concerns over the lowered standards for Hall of Famers, but to me Dawson isn't the type that does that. There are elected members of the Hall that I totally disagree with, but I'm yes on Dawson.
  16. Scanning through this thread, I believe I counted 11 yes votes, and 10 no votes. The polls forum currently shows 8 yes and 10 no, please place your vote, whether you post your opinion in the thread or not. Thanks. I'm not getting off this one...........Dawson YES.
  17. I found the formula on baseball-reference.com this morning, posted what they show in the statistical analysis forum.
  18. I found the formula on baseball-reference.com. 2*HR*SB/(HR+SB) I can't wait to see where Weeks ranks on this list in a few years.
  19. I can't believe Dawson doesn't have more support than this. As clancy pointed out, Dawson ranks 6th all-time in power/speed number. For those of you who don't know, this stat is used to show which players have the best combination of speed and power. Current leaders are guys like Abreu and A-Rod. Dawson was 6th best ever! Does that not move anyone to vote yes? Here's the link www.baseball-reference.co...reer.shtml Someone mentioned that Dawson was Billy Hall for 20 years........that's completely ridiculous. Was Hall Rookie of the Year? Does anyone here really think he'll ever win MVP? How about gold gloves? Silver Sluggers? Hall won't ever see any of those things, Dawson did them all, some several times over. Top ten ever in power/speed, backed with outstanding defense, over a period of 16 full seasons. Why is that not a Hall of Famer?
  20. Would someone please explain how to calculate this stat? From it's name, I get the idea of what the stat is, but what does it tell you exactly? thanks
  21. Maybe Smoltz will do one of those Latissimus Dorsi things.
  22. Did you know.............Dawson currently ranks 32nd all time in career home runs, and was 22nd overall at the time of his retirement?
  23. Simmons is at 65% yes in the poll through 20 votes. Come on yes guys.........wake your friends and neighbors.
  24. Hi gregmag, thanks for the response. I agree with most of what you said. Rice was definitely a better hitter, but that's the only edge I give him over Dawson. You mentioned how Dawson ran very well and Rice basically didn't run at all. I remember their defense as the same type of comparison. Maybe I'm wrong, but I do not remember Rice as a good fielder, I remember him as a guy who could handle his spot, but who DHed a lot because the Sox had better defensive options. Dawson was an outstanding fielder with good range and one of the best throwing arms of his generation. Mix those things with the difference in longevity and my choice between the two is Dawson. I agree OBP for Dawson is a stat that hurts his case, but I still think he did enough.
  25. Ok 7reb, here it comes............Rice v Dawson and Dawson v Control Group. Please remember this is per season 162 games played = 1 season, S = seasons S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 16.2 85 171 31 6 27 98 19 .279 .805 Dawson 12.8 97 190 29 6 30 113 4 .298 .854 Rice 16.9 97 172 29 4 29 99 10 .292 .877 Group Control group consists of Aaron, Jackson, Kaline, Mays, Puckett, F Robinson, Snider, B Williams, Winfield and Yastrzemski.
