  1. Oh, forgot this part, in last year's voting Dawson got 270 votes, or 52.3%. That was fourth highest among players not elected, 37 votes below Rice.
  2. I said I'd introduce the next player Friday morning, so I will. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Andre Dawson. Over 400 homers, over 300 steals, 8 All-Stars, 1 MVP, 1977 NL Rookie of the Year, 4 Silver Sluggers, 8 Gold Gloves. Of the ten similar batters listed on baseballreference.com, 5 are in the Hall, three are not, two not yet eligible. As I did for Rice and Simmons, I have some interesting comparison stats vs a control group of Hall of Fame outfielders, but I'm going to withhold that for now, to hear what some of you have to say first. I say, yes, a player with Hawk's combination of power, speed and defense should be elected. The polls forum is waiting, what do you say?
  3. The next player up is from that same era, then we're going to have a completely different type of discussion.
  4. Hi pogo- True, I didn't compare him to everyone I could have. What I was trying to do was compare him to the most similar list I could build. Gibson's stats won't work because he wasn't allowed into MLB, although I would never argue that Simmons was in Gibson's class. To me, the game was too different for the pre WW 2 guys, at any position, those guys tend to have higher averages, more steals, and lower power numbers. I don't think it's fair to compare guys who played during segregation, all or mostly day games, etc to guys from more recent decades. Piazza's not there because he's not a current Hall of Famer, no other reason.
  5. As I did with Ted Simmons, I decided to compare Rice to a control group of HOF outfielders on a per season basis. Control group consists of Aaron, Jackson, Kaline, Mays, Puckett, F Robinson, Snider, Williams, Winfield and Yastrzemski 162 games played = 1 season. S = seasons played S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 12.8 97 190 29 6 30 113 4 .298 .854 Rice 16.9 97 172 29 4 29 99 10 .292 .877 Group Per season, Rice compares well and looks like a Hall of Famer, the only thing he appears to lack is steals, the rest compares well to the group. In my opinion, the one unforgiveable shortfall is the first stat, 12.8 seasons played, vs 16.9 for the group. Jim, you were great, you just didn't do it long enough for me.
  6. Let's see if this helps anyone decide. I compared Simmons to a control group of post WW 2 Hall of Fame catchers on a per season basis to see how he stacks up. I used 162 games played as one season. The control group consists of Bench, Berra, Campanella, Carter and Fisk. The average seasons played for the control group was affected by Campanella's short MLB career. S=seasons played S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 15.1 71 163 32 3 16 92 1 .285 .785 Simmons S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 12.7 81 154 26 2 26 97 4 .271 .815 Group As you can see, Ted beat the group in hits, doubles, triples and average per season, but fell short in homers, rbi, steals and OPS. In my opinion, a catcher that played the equivalent of 15 full seasons, averaging 92 rbi per season, with a career average that far above the standard for his position deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. I realize the others had more power, and I realize I haven't accounted for defense at a crucial position, but to me the hits and rbi over that period of time say enough.
  7. Guess I should brush up on the Veterans Committee rules. As far as I know, you don't have to get 5% for 15 years (Phil Rizutto couldn't possibly have done that, could he?). I had forgotten about the 21 years retired rule though, looks like Ted won't be eligible for consideration in '07. Here's a look at the Veterans Committee results from '05. www.baseballhalloffame.or...050302.htm
  8. The next Veterans Committee vote is in 2007, Fingers, Molitor, Sutton, Yount, Brock, Gibson, Musial and Schoendienst are all on the committee, as are Bench and Berra..........I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ted get in.
  9. Here's to 4 more Florida errors, and another pile of hits from our young guys.
  10. Great post Greg. It's really tough to compare the two guys, one was pure power, the other a great leadoff hitter, but to me the key difference is what happened at age 35 and beyond. Molitor put together several outstanding seasons, whereas Rice was finished. To me that's the difference........2-3 more good years would have made Rice an easy choice, if Molitor's injuries had stopped him at 36 he may not have made it.
  11. I know a lot of you voiced opinions on Simmons a few weeks ago in RoseBowl's "Happy Birthday" thread, but I have a hard time believing 1800 Brewer fans have less to say in Ted's HOF trial than they had to say about Rice or Sutter. C'mon guys, let's hear it. Only 5 votes in the polls forum? That's the same kind of treatment Ted got from the writers, and he was one of our own.
  12. Thanks rluz, fun thread. I'm hoping for 82 wins, and to finish ahead of the Cubs.
  13. Isn't Ohka's career mark against Florida something like 0-10?
  14. I went ahead and set up a poll for Ted in the polls forum. I changed my vote to yes. Clancy, it looks like you picked a good one, the early posts seem to support Ted.
  15. Thank you Colby, I have indeed put a lot of thought into this, and I hope everyone is enjoying it. I didn't like it, and I did feel a bit disrespected, but please don't anyone get worked up over it, have a good time, this is a fan site........be a fan! Nothing has changed for me, I plan to continue as stated in the thread Colby referenced. This thread is out here now, if you have something to say about Simmons, he's certainly a worthy candidate.
  16. I'll start by voting no on Simmons. Great player, in fact my favorite for some of his time in Milwaukee. The best eligible catcher who's not in, but I have to say no. Hi SeriesFinale, thanks for your comment. I wasn't trying to make a big deal of things, this is all just for fun. What I was saying is, I had put some thought into this and had developed a list of players I wanted to do this for. I'm sure I still will, if others want to throw names out there, I'm sure we could all do it that way too. I hope I didn't offend Clancy, or anyone else with my prior comment, I also hope everyone enjoys the topic.
  17. Hey Clancy, you're kind of walking on me here. I guess I don't have a right to say much, this certainly isn't my site, but I kind of had a plan for this.
  18. Greg, that was funny. Take a look at Rice's page on baseballreference.com, it lists ten similar batters, and the list sort of makes both cases here. On the list are several Hall of Famers, but also Ellis Burks and Chili Davis. Rice I think there's still plenty of room for either side to persuade the masses. If I'm reading this right, we're at 5 yes votes and 10 no votes right now.
  19. I see a NY guy used his first post to rip a guy from Boston, and place a write in vote for Mattingly. Imagine that. My initial vote on Rice was no, but I may change that. He compares well to guys like Orlando Cepeda, Duke Snider and Billy Williams, who are already in.
  20. I found this site, supporting Rice's case. members.shaw.ca/Rice4HOF?stats.html
  21. Hey Greg....... Rice's prime was pretty much '75-'85, leaving pitchers out, there are very few players I would say were clearly better during those seasons. I would say the most feared hitters in those years were Mike Schmidt in the NL and George Brett in the AL. Guys to compare Rice to........Dwight Evans, Fred Lynn, Dave Parker, Cecil Cooper, Dale Murphy, Brett and Schmidt, Steve Garvey, Dave Winfield, George Foster, Andre Dawson, Eddie Murray.
  22. There have been some great posts so far on both Sutter and Rice, if you haven't read through them yet, I suggest it. It's really interesting to see the different ways people value players. From reading through the Sutter thread, it appears as though Bruce got 10 yes votes and 6 no votes. I'm not sure if that's accurate, but it's close. That leaves Bruce with 62.5% of the Brewerfan.net vote.........which is about what the writers seemed to think of him last year. If you don't mind guys, after you post, please hit the polls forum and place your vote, it'll help me out, and come on, it takes like 8 seconds.
  23. Hey Colby, thanks for compliment. I can't leave you hanging, I had to go back and edit, Mike Schmidt got to 500 while Rice was still playing. To illustrate how much the game has changed since that era, I remember vividly how Graig Nettles and Dale Murphy both tried to reach 400 homers, because it would put them in the driver's seat for the Hall.
  24. Greg, I'm glad you're enjoying these, I'm loving the feedback it gets, it's becoming what I had hoped it would. Brett, good idea, I'll include a link from now on. To me, Rice is right on the edge. I saw him play a lot, at his best he was a game changer. One or two more good seasons would have made him an easy yes for me, but he tailed off very quickly, that does just enough to make me say no. In his defense, only two players hit their 500th career homer during Jim's career (Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt) and there was only one 50 homer season (George Foster '77). His 382 homers are impressive for the era.
  25. Hey Pogo.......you bet, Raines is on my list, hang on. As I mentioned in the Sutter thread, I plan on rolling these guys out about once a week. I've started with the guys who were closest without making it in last year's vote, some of the guys I'll get to won't be on the tip of your tongue. Thanks for your comments! I hope you all enjoy this Hall of Fame stuff, I just felt like it's always a great topic of conversation amongst fans, and for some reason I've always taken quite an interest.
