  1. Dan Duquette sent me this quote from Theo Epstein this morning, I just thought I'd share... Here is an incise assessment on acquiring top Flight ML Pitching: "It's always tempting but it always comes at great cost. When you do it through the free agent market, it comes at tremendous risk in terms of the years and dollars you have to spend and if you do it through trade, it comes at tremendous cost - your best and most promising prospects - the core of your organization in a lot of ways." Theo Epstein
  2. Eveland fans, the A's have given up...
  3. I think the Brewers could move JJ Hardy in the blink of an eye. He's still young, he's got a track record, and he plays a premium position...shortstop is a very tough spot for a lot of teams to fill. I don't know if Boston would deal Buchholz or not, but I'm sure their management would love to add JJ Hardy...as they should be. Good management won't let a bad half-season, offensively, override a very solid defender at a tough position, who has provided very good power over the prior two seasons. One hot month, and plenty of Brewers fans will start talking about dealing Escobar instead.
  4. Good move for St Louis, but as others have said, the Brewers have options at 2B, the need for a pitcher is far greater. I do think the Brewers will trade for an arm, I do not think that arm will be a #1 or #2 starter. There just doesn't seem to be that guy available right now. It might have been Brandon Webb, but he's out, it might have been Jake Peavy, but he's out, it might have been Erik Bedard, but he's out, and Seattle isn't even out of the race right now. I just don't see that big guy out there to get at the moment.
  5. What a great effort! Clutch hitting...smart hitting....a home run saving catch....just awesome.
  6. BCZF...thank you. Bikeage...there's no "one way" to network. Some players work through agents, others through friends...and sometimes you just plain get lucky. The advice I'll give anyone, in any field, is to make yourself easy to find, and respect others. That combination is foolproof, you'll be surprised by what doors will open in time.
  7. Cameron Garfield went 5 for 5 in his debut.
  8. I don't have a link yet, but it is confirmed. Mike Wiener is the replacement. (Edited to add ESPN link - hawing)
  9. I admit, I gave up on the game and missed the comeback. "Splitter just pawn in game of life...."
  10. Rollie called me today, to go over a couple of things. I just had to come on here again, to thank Brian for building this site, and allowing me to play on it...and to thank Rollie, for treating me so well. Rollie, I know you're on here reading the interview right now....if you happened to open this thread....thank you so much....you couldn't have been more pleasant to talk to.
  11. This has started George Carlin's, "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" routine playing in my head.
  12. Sending Parra down is absolutely the right move....I still like his potential, but the team can't afford to wait around right now.
  13. I've lost track - how many homers do the guys have so far?
  14. Yes, you can look forward to more interviews, but I can't promise they'll be as frequent...good luck never hurt anyone. I have not approached Russell Branyan, but I will at some point.
  15. OK, I admit it...I had already asked him about this when that was posted.
  16. Two things...first, Rollie said he was a bit surprised that none of his former teams had ever asked him to help their young pitchers...I find that hard to believe. The man has three rings, a World Series MVP, a League MVP and a Cy Young Award, and he retired with more saves than anyone in MLB history. He might know something about getting hitters out. The other thing...I think it's time for Brian to grow a handlebar. Who's with me?
  17. I think this is the right to for the Angels to be listening to offers - it doesn't mean they make a deal yet, but they need to know the possibilities. Yes, they could get back in the division race, but they could just as easily go the other way too, discussions today could mean a deal in 3-4 weeks.
  18. He wasn't my first favorite Brewer, and he's not my current favorite...he is my all-time favorite. I hope you like it. -Todd
  19. The Dodgers just drafted Joel Effertz, RHP, Ladysmith HS.
  20. Minnesota selects Eric Decker...round 27.
  21. ecj, Mandy doesn't know what will change in baseball, but it's the overwhelming feeling she gets. I think if the Coolbaugh family had their choice, there would be netting in front of every seat in every stadium, but they realize that's not likely to happen. The coaches wear helmets on the field now, so there has been some tangible change, who knows what else is coming? Scott Coolbaugh and his wife Susan have become advocates for improved safety in baseball, I'm sure they will be advancing some new ideas in the future. I had hoped to speak with Scott for this interview, but his coaching schedule would not allow it at this time.
  22. Thank you everyone. It was my pleasure, these ladies are simply amazing. I spoke with Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com the other day, he told me in all his years of doing interviews, Mandy Coolbaugh is the most inspirational person he's ever met. He's right.
  23. DHonks, neither Cheryl nor Mandy mentioned Brewerfan when I first contacted them. Today, Mandy told me she'd read the piece I did on Ray Chapman's death after she and I had talked...she pointed out that it posted on the site the day after Mike was killed. Special thanks to both ladies for this interview....and by the way...it was Cheryl who introduced me to Brooks Kieschnick.
  24. link First off, today is Mike Coolbaugh's birthday, he would be 37 today. I heard from Mandy, the family is together, celebrating. Thank you to both ladies for your courage, and your candor, you're both simply amazing. -Todd
  25. If I had to bet....I doubt Rollie cares much about this young man's facial hair. I have to think this has been pointed out to him by now.
