  1. The biggest reason? Scott Boras
  2. From Buster Olney's blog: One more problem for the Dodgers as they consider trades is that officials in some other organizations believe that the depth of L.A.'s prospects -- which was envied by other clubs for years -- is in regression. Rival scouts rave about the likes of Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsley, but the stock of Dodgers' second level of prospects (third baseman Andy LaRoche, infielder Chin-Lung Hu, etc.) has dropped in the eyes of some talent evaluators. This is spot-on. To get what they want, LA will have to dip into Kemp, Kershaw, Billingsley, - the guys behind them in their system have really fallen in the eyes of scouts this season. LaRoche and Hu specifically have flopped in trials with the Dodgers, and DeWitt has been completely ordinary. This leaves the Dodgers in a tough spot to begin with, then when you realize they're trying to deal for a pitcher, and a shortstop, you realize - they don't have enough to get this done. LA has to decide which position it needs to fill most, and then they have to find a deal without creating a new hole somewhere else on the major league roster. I honestly don't think they'll give what it takes for a big ticket player like Sabathia.
  3. The Dodgers would not trade Kershaw, and even if they did, Milwaukee would not be seeking a shortstop prospect in the deal.
  4. You can announce a trade at any hour, I've seen players pulled out of a game because they'd just been dealt.
  5. I think tomorrow may be the perfect time to do this. Cleveland will get their best return if they ship CC right now, so that his new team can use him right away. He would pitch on Sunday or Monday, so if they do it tomorrow, he could get on a plane, get his physical out of the way, etc, and then pitch the next day.
  6. I just got back from watching fireworks. What'd I miss? What'd I miss? OOOH! AAAAH!
  7. Some of you have stated you'd hate to see Counsell or Hall at SS for the rest of the year. It sounds like it won't matter now, but Olney had stated more than once that the team was ready to call Escobar up and use him right now. I believe that would happen if Hardy or Weeks were dealt.
  8. Trust the organization guys, if they're being this aggressive, there's a reason. My guess is, they've decided Sheets is out of their price range, and it would be better to move Prince than to take him up the arby ladder, so they're taking their best shot. If they make this deal, they absolutely have a better shot this season, and for next season, you've got Gallardo back, and Escobar at SS.....essentially this year's Opening Day team, minus Ben Sheets. Go after it again in the winter, use Prince to get an arm like Matt Cain, and you've got three excellent young arms in next year's rotation, with plenty of offense left in the system....and another basket of draft picks to work with. It's expensive, but I like it. If it's Hardy, LaPorta and Green...that might literally make me cry.
  9. On Sizemore - Would you take Peralta, a stud prospect, and an A-ball pitcher for Sheets and Braun tomorrow? That's at least in the ballpark of what we'd be asking for.
  10. To those who say, "That's a lot to give for half a season of Sabathia"....come on now, Sabathia will sign with a big payroll team, and Sheets probably will too - the Brewers would OWN the draft next year, possibly five of the first 35 picks. Look at the Brewers' track record of developing players - and tell me that isn't a big deal.
  11. Honestly, Hardy and LaPorta might be the best scenario for the Brewers. JJ is red hot right now, so there's obviously a reason not to do this, but I don't think you could find one scout who would tell you to deal Escobar and keep Hardy. If this brings Green back out of the offer, that helps too, he's a player who offers high OBP, and he may fill a void at either 2B or 3B. You are not going to get Sabathia for the stretch run, and two high draft choices for one stud prospect alone. LaPorta makes the most sense for the Brewers, based on the current roster, and Hardy could walk a lot sooner than Escobar, who may very well turn out to be better than JJ in the first place.
  12. I'd do Gwynn for Maddux without hesitation. Don't expect Maddux to come here and dominate, but a hot month is certainly not out of the question.
  13. Maddux is not horrible, he just isn't great at this point. I think he would be an upgrade over Bush, though not a major one. The key to me would be adding depth, and experience. Gwynn is a role player, who may not even have a future in that capacity with the Brewers - I'd do that deal. For CC, I'd stick with one of the studs at Huntsville, plus Green and a low-level pitcher. I'd give them more than that, but I'd want more than just CC in return, which I guess is right where the two GMs are at this point.
  14. The other night, Peter Gammons mentioned that Milwaukee would add "One, if not two" starting pitchers. He may be right.
  15. First of all, why do the Brewers even care about Marte? Beyond that, Hardy or Escobar "In a deal" is one thing. Hardy or Escobar in a deal with LaPorta, for a guy who walks in November - is stupid.
  16. I could see the Brewers giving up LaPorta, Green and Periard in a deal with Cleveland, but you just cannot add Escobar to that package - it makes it ridiculous.
  17. The house cleaning begins in Cleveland. http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080704&content_id=3063152&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
  18. I honestly don't worry about the defense anymore. Yes, it could be better than it is, but it's much better than it had been, I don't think the D we've got right now would prevent a playoff berth. I do wish we had another lefty bat in there, but we don't. The bullpen - yep, I want one more reliable guy in there. I like Villy as the long man, I like having the two lefties, and Torres can close, or be the setup guy - we need one more late inning pitcher. There is not a better team than the Brewers in the NL East, or in the NL West. No matter how much Big Media hates that, it's still true. Are there two teams in the NL Central who are better than Milwaukee right now? I'm not convinced of that, and if Sabathia comes in - definitely not. A move like this not only brings an impact pitcher to the team - it should ignite the whole clubhouse. If you're on this team, and you see a move like that, how could you not show up tomorrow with a major boost in enthusiasm?
  19. Why should Cleveland be all over LaPorta and Green? To me, the Indians should say "yes" to that, without another word. Green - .297 AVE, .833 OPS, 10 HR, and solid defense at either 2B or 3B. LaPorta - .291 AVE, .988 OPS, 20 HR, could play a corner OF spot, or 1B Does that beat getting two draft picks? Yes, it does, LaPorta could move up to Cleveland tomorrow if they wanted him to, and Green would be there in 2010. Most of the guess work is done with these guys, two draft picks would have to prove they can do it, these two players have clearly done that to this point. If the Indians want another player included - so do I.
  20. BC in 04 - totally agreed - Escobar in this deal would completely negate the excitement for me. I'd be angry, and nothing more. I think LaPorta and Green is too much to give in the first place, but sometimes that's the way things go, and you never know with prospects.
  21. You guys who want Melvin canned if this happens - have you not read the reports of Mr Attanasio pushing these buttons, because he wants to win now? Doug isn't stupid, and he wouldn't make such a radical change in philosophy overnight - he's an employee, apparently with something close to a mandate.
  22. I had a scout tell me yesterday that after watching Huntsville recently, he'd recommend Errecart to be included in any deal. Until he said that, I hadn't paid any attention to Errecart this season, he does indeed look like a solid prospect.
  23. It's to the point now where I fully expect this to happen, and probably in time for Sabathia to start Monday or Tuesday in Milwaukee. If it does happen, I'm certain that I'll positively freak out when I see what we gave up to get him - that's just the nature of the beast. I want a reliever, immediately. Either get one with CC, or get one from somewhere else - now. I'd love for it to be Fuentes, but the Red Sox, Rays, Yankees, Phillies and Cardinals are all chasing him. Two more draft picks would make for an insane draft day, but I think I'd rather stay out of that fight.
  24. Escobar is the holdup for me, make it LaPorta and Salome and I get over it, but I want Perez back too, I had looked at his state earlier tonight. LaPorta, Salome and a third player for Sabathia and Perez would work for me...just lay off the rest of the top five.
