  1. I'd much rather pursue veteran talent from the Japanese League, than pay money like this to a 16-year-old. There's too much risk here, I'm glad the Brewers didn't do this.
  2. I was going to mention Steve Barber, but I see it's already in the thread. I went to high school with two of his daughters, they talked about that a lot.
  3. The Brewers are in great shape, one out of the wildcard, 4.5 out of the division lead, with half a season left to play. There's no reason not to go for it! I suspect a lot of the teams they want to deal with are still holding out hope that they're in the race themselves, I suspect it'll be at least two weeks before a deal happens, but I'm certain that something will get done. It wouldn't shock me if they dealt for both a starter and a reliever, with as shaky as Mota and Riske have been, there may be room for more than one new face.
  4. Trust me, Minnesota sports fans do not flock to the ballpark - for any of their teams. When I lived over there in the 90s, I got to watch the Packers almost every week, because the Vikings were never sold out. I took a bunch of kids to the Twins' "Bat Night" one year, they gave all four of the kids I was with extra bats on the way out, each of them took four bats home because there were so many left over. When the Badgers play there, the dome is filled with red, when the Packers play there, you see tons of green and gold - nobody from the Twins organization has any right to slam someone else's fan support, or to claim that Twins fans travel well.
  5. Where is the Tampa market's 'ceiling' -- is it somewhere around Houston? Just thinking in terms of comparisons with other MLB markets as they are today. I know it'd likely never be up with NY, Bos, LA, etc. The list I have is getting a bit dated, it's 2004, but as far as TV households go... Tampa/ St Pete, #12 nationally, 1,710,400 households Houston, #10 nationally, 1,938,670 households FYI, Milwaukee, #33 nationally, 880,390 households
  6. Wow, that's at least the third time someone at ESPN has mentioned Attanasio's "win-now" attitude.
  7. The Twins will have to contend with both Cy McYoung and Ben Clutch - it's in the bag.
  8. Wow, two intentional walks loaded the bases...then an unintentional walk forced in the winning run. Can you imagine the reaction if that happened to the Brewers? Closer....a little bit closer....
  9. Is 19 open yet? If it's not, I'd do the County A to 16 route, that worked very well for me last week.
  10. I can't see KC wanting to deal for Prince, for the same reason that Milwaukee may be willing to deal him - Scott Boras will not let Prince sign a long-term deal in KC. I'd bet the Royals would rather get Hart, but I don't think the Brewers will be offering that. That team needs to get bats, I could envision them dealing Greinke for some of the Huntsville guys. As for Prince, that's likely to be a bigger market - my first thought is the Angels. The Angels have pitching depth, and they need a left-handed power hitter. I could see that organization dealing for Prince, and worrying about Boras later.
  11. My first thought is, "Houston would need to get young arms." Their pitching is already woefully thin, and then Oswalt would be gone - I think they'd want as many young pitchers as they could grab.
  12. OK, let's hear it, will Hart sign a new long-term contract with the Brewers, or will he play it one year at a time, ultimately leaving town once his six years are in? The team offered Corey a new deal in March, but he turned it down - which way is this going to go?
  13. If the team is convinced that Jeffress is past his personal issue, then he needs to be untouchable. He's the best arm they've got above the rookie league right now.
  14. I thought Johnson was the best pitcher in the league that year, with Sheets clearly second-best. When the votes came out, and I saw where Sheets rated, I was reminded yet again that the wrong people are allowed to choose.
  15. Yes, Lawrie can sign, and still participate in the Olympics.
  16. Last month totals: Webb - 2 wins, 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP Johnson - 0 wins, 6.61 ERA, 1.56 WHIP Owings - 0 wins, 8.53 ERA, 1.74 WHIP Haren - 3 wins, 2.48 ERA, .90 WHIP That's been one stud, one average starter, and two disasters. Suppan - 2 wins, 2.79 ERA, 1.52 WHIP McClung - 3 wins, 3.99 ERA, 1.23 WHIP Parra - 7 wins, 4.29 ERA, 1.61 WHIP Sheets - 4 wins, 2.11 ERA, 1.01 WHIP Those starts against Baltimore destroyed both Suppan and Parra's WHIP, but even at that, I don't see an edge for AZ, the highest ERA in the bunch for Milwaukee matches what Webb has done in recent weeks. I don't see why the Brewers can't split that series.
  17. Webb slowed down, Sheets hasn't - knowing the voters often go with the best pitcher on a playoff team - could the leaders be Ben Sheets and Ryan Dempster? It's clearly way too early to really debate this, but those two guys, and Webb, are in the best position right now. Volquez will have to finish with an ERA under 2, or win 24 games or something nuts like that. He's been the best pitcher in the league, but with his team flat on its face, it won't matter.
  18. This is a major non-story. There was no reason for the Brewers to offer him a big new contract prior to the season, and now there is no reason for Sheets to sign a new deal without seeing what's out there. It's basically a no-win situation, if he makes 20-25 starts again, there's no way you pay big to keep him, and if he finishes with a great season, he's likely priced right out of Milwaukee. The best thing to do as a fan, is to hope he stays hot, and let the front office worry about what happens in November. He hasn't said he wouldn't re-sign here, and the team hasn't said they wouldn't try to keep him once the season is over, anything is still possible, but if Ben wants top dollar, that will likely come from somewhere else.
  19. I have thousands of posts, so I can say whatever I want.....and Mom thought I was wasting my life....
  20. Wow, so the 23rd round pick is the first guy on the list who may not sign? That's phenomenal.
  21. Sure there's a chance, and while we're at it, he's a very real Cy Young candidate through this point in the season.
  22. "Did you ever belch and taste a hot dog you had two days ago?" "It's a $50 fine for spitting in a New York subway....vomiting is free!" Thanks, George.
  23. I could see the Royals dealing Greinke, because arms are all they've got coming through their system right now. They've taken a bat in the first round each of the last two years, but both of those players are years away from Kansas City. Thirteen of their top fifteen prospects are pitchers - this is a team that may actually need to deal some arms, Greinke is the one the would bring the best return right now. When I look at Huntsville, I see six future major leaguers in that lineup, I have no problem dealing from that depth, but I want an arm that will be here for more than 60 games. I wouldn't deal Gamel or Escobar for anyone right now, beyond them, I'd at least discuss any prospect in the system, in return for quality pitching. I'd at least want to hear what KC wants for Greinke, they pretty much need all of the young position players they can get right now.
  24. That leaves Escobar, Jeffress, Suppan and Hall. It also leaves Salome, Brantley, Gillespie, Villanueva, Nelson, and every pitcher currently in A-ball. I don't think Suppan will be discussed in possible trades right now, and I would have to think Hall's value is about as low as its ever been - not to say teams wouldn't want him - but he's certainly not going to be a centerpiece right now. If I'm Cleveland, I'm on LaPorta or Gamel, and then go from there. I don't think the Brewers would give them either guy, because of Sabathia's contract status.
  25. I hope people realize how special it is for the Brewers to have a group that not only drafts great talent, but also chooses guys who sign quickly. All signs point to Lawrie, Lintz and Wooten signing, which leaves Blake Billings, Round 19, as the first guy on the list who may not join the organization. The team chose 29 players in the first 25 rounds, and the worst they'll come out with is 27 of them signed - plus several more signees from the later rounds. This draft has the potential to be a real difference maker for the Brewers, getting so many of these guys started so soon will likely get the first of them to Milwaukee one season earlier.
