  1. Griep’s command has improved a notch this season. Prior to this year, I wasn’t convinced of his viability due to command problems and mechanical over-tweaking. I still don’t think he’s more than a low leverage bullpen arm, but that’s an improvement. I still have Barker way ahead of him, though, so I don’t disagree with giving Luke more high leverage innings.
  2. It does not. Because you know he isn't simply overpowering novice hitters at the lower level? Or getting swings on a slider due to poor plate discipline more than fooling batters? Jacob Barnes could put up the same numbers in A and A+. Because I trust my eyes in the three games I’ve seen him pitch, and because I trust the reports that I’ve seen lauding his stuff. Six innings in his first taste of AA is not going to make me rethink these things. He’s not a finished product to be sure. He needs to work on FB command and use his CH more effectively, off the top of my head. And in order to remain a starter, he’s going to have to add a curve or splitter to get that third velocity band.
  3. Yep, nope. No idea who those other two players are, but Nolan Jones is a 55 OFP prospect, meaning he has about $42 million in excess value. The most realistic optimistic case I can make for Thames would that he'd be worth 4 WAR between now and then end of 2020, assuming his option is picked up. That would give him about $28 million of excess value, still far short of Jones. I think, however, there are a)very few people in baseball who would assume Thames is worth that much and b)if he was, you keep him anyway. More likely, Thames would be valued at 1 WAR for the remainder of 2019 only, which gives him under $5 million of excess value. The Brewers would have to "kick in" something along the lines of Aaron Ashby, Trey Supak, and Jake Gatewood (at least) to make it work. If you take out McDowell and Jones from the trade proposal, that might work.
  4. It does not.
  5. Rasmussen has less than 20 IP as a pro and 6 IP above A-ball. His stats at the moment have almost no meaning beyond anecdotal observations. The single most important thing is that his stuff is still there. He’s throwing 96-99 with a plus slider and usable changeup. That’s what will get him to Milwaukee. The stats will fall into place.
  6. I'd assume either a bunt or a deflection.
  7. INF Blake Allemand and C Tuffy Gosewich activated today for the Missions from the Rocky Mountain roster. They fill the spots vacated by Keston Hiura and Cory Spangenberg.

And welcome to Mike Haeger in San Antonio! *** Standings and sortable stat pages *** MiLB.TV options: Home for Wisconsin, road for San Antonio and Biloxi, Carolina unavailable.
  9. Coca has matured physically quite a bit in the past few years. He looks a fair bit stronger now. He's still a slender athlete, but it no longer looks like he's about to tip over due to a mild breeze. He has a long-ish swing that has resulted in a 20%+ K rate and scouts have preferred him from the right side of the plate in the past, possibly limiting him to the weak side of a platoon. He does have good bat speed, though, and has begun hitting the ball in the air more. With his open stance and new swing lift, most power is likely to come from the pull side. The key for his development is really going to be strike zone awareness. He's going to strike out due to the swing length, but if he can draw walks and lift balls he can get to, he has a chance to be a fringe-solid regular in the middle infield. About his defense - it's fine, from what I've been able to tell. I guess the fact that I haven't noticed much about it is a good thing.
  10. A few notes on Gillaspie’s start. And a few notes on newcomer Yohandry Perez.
  11. If memory serves, there was a rumor that the Brewers refused to include Hiura in a deal for Realmuto. If they aren't trading him for a few seasons of JT Realmuto, they aren't trading him for half a season of Madison Bumgarner.
  12. The Brewers no longer have the luxury of developing Williams as a starter. He’s scheduled to be a minor league FA after the season. With his intermittent command issues, he’s more cut out to be a reliever at this point anyway. I do love the progress he’s made, though, and in fact think he may end up as a 40-man add in September.
  13. As noted in the Drew Rasmussen thread, RHP Drew Rasmussen has been promoted (again), this time from Carolina to Biloxi. RHP Braden Webb transferred from Rocky Mountain to Carolina (essentially from Biloxi to Carolina).
  14. Now that the Brewers aren't playing the same two elite offenses over and over, they're pitching better. Weird.
  15. Fry has looked solid behind the dish, certainly light years ahead of where KJ Harrison was at this point last year. It doesn't look like he's inexperienced at the position. Moves laterally fine, good footwork, arm strength seems to be about average. Mentally locked in and shows leadership. In terms of current defense, I'd put him behind Henry and McDowell. He's right with Nottingham and Feliciano though. None of the Brewers' better catching prospects are bad or even below average defenders, which is nice. Should also say Feliciano looks a lot more confident behind the plate as well.

  17. Per the Brewers, OF Wes Rogers has been transferred from Rocky Mountain to Carolina, and INF Dallas Carroll has been released.
  18. I believe Burch Smith has one option remaining.
  19. Shaw does have two options left, and does not have enough service time to block an option assignment. That said, I would be shocked if the Brewers sent him to the minors.
  20. If he clears waivers, Jackson can elect to reject an outright assignment and become a free agent. So he could get claimed, or not get claimed and become a FA, or not get claimed and accept the assignment to San Antonio. If he accepts the assignment to San Antonio and the Brewers later add him back to the 40-man, he could still be optioned as necessary.
  21. Extreme minutia - RHP Gabe Friese activated from Carolina's 7-day DL and then transferred to Rocky Mountain. So from not active to... still not active. Friese faced one batter for the Mudcats this year, walked him, and then left the game with an injury.
  22. In addition to news of Jake Petricka and Alex Wilson outrights to AAA, RHP Johan Belisario has been transferred from Rocky Mountain to Biloxi to fill the open roster spot there. Belisario has appeared in five games (including one start) with the Shuckers this year. The Shuckers' roster is now full, albeit lopsided with 14 pitchers. Petricka and Wilson have not been activated yet for the Missions.
  23. INF Nick Roscetti transferred from Rocky Mountain to Carolina. He flip-flops with fellow INF Julio Garcia, who has been transferred from Carolina to Rocky Mountain.
  24. Per a Brewers' PD tweet: RHP Josh Fields was released from San Antonio after opting out of his contract and asking for his release. LHP Angel Perdomo promoted from Biloxi to San Antonio. INF Korry Howell transferred to Wisconsin from Rocky Mountain. RHP Yohandry Perez transferred to Wisconsin from AZL Gold, where he was on a future contract (i.e., wasn't likely to be playing until this summer in complex ball). The 22-year-old will be making his pro debut with Wisconsin, assuming he pitches. LHP Wilfred Salaman transferred from Wisconsin to Rocky Mountain and C Kekai Rios transferred from Wisconsin to AZL Gold; both are likely to stay with the Rattlers for the time being.
