  1. Hey, if overpaying Valentine by $2 mil only means Melvin can't afford "Solidifying Veteran Reliever" for the next 3 years, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, it's not that simple.
  2. Wouldn't a house of cards fold?
  3. According to Gameday, Logan Schafer is making his AFL debut this afternoon, playing CF and leading off. 2B Eric Farris and Caleb Gindl are also in the lineup, batting 2 and 3. Edit: Hunter Morris is also in the lineup, batting 6th and playing 3rd.
  4. More form TH's textings with Valentine: "Bobby Valentine told me he met with the Brewers but "nothing is ongoing" and no follow-up meeting has been scheduled."
  5. I don't have a problem paying Valentine a hundred bazillion dollars, denominated in Nepalese Rupees, provided it doesn't take one dime away from major league payroll, the farm system, or scouting. Unfortunately, giving Valentine $3 mil+ per year would probably adversely affect one or more of those areas. Anyway, my spidey sense says that this report isn't on the mark.
  6. Haudricourt reports that "Bill Scott of Wisconsin Radio Network says Brewers have agreement in principle with Bobby Valentine to be manager. I'm looking into it."
  7. Today's Gameday shows Dan Merklinger, not Mike Fiers, starting. Gameday gets things wrong sometimes, so we'll see. Hunter Morris is batting cleanup, playing 1B. Farris and Gindl get the day off. Edit: Merklinger is indeed getting the start over Fiers. Could be we'll see Fiers in relief later on.
  8. Haudricourt: "I was just told by a very good source that Dodgers Triple-A manager Tim Wallach is not one of the four finalists for Brewers' managerial job." So that means one of the finalists is indeed a name we haven't heard yet. Melvin, Cora and either Roenicke or another mystery man are the other three guys.
  9. I'm 6'6 and love my Saturn Vue. I actually fit in to my wife's Toyota Corolla pretty well when the seat is all the way back.
  10. I'm still holding out hope for a Dave Martinez or DeMarlo Hale type hire. The point was already made in the Sveum thread, but I think retaining previous staff points to the hiring of a younger guy.
  11. Melvin said that "some of the names (reported) are right and some aren't right" - if you take that to assume one of the guys mentioned wasn't actually interviewed, my guess was that it was either Wedge and/or Wallach. Both of those were reported by Ken Rosenthal, who isn't exactly a bastion of reliable rumormongering. Roenicke is a possibility to add to that group, too. OTOH, it was reported alluded to elsewhere (I think an LA Times piece linked earlier in the thread) that Wallach was interviewed. So, given that Bob Melvin, Cora and Listach were almost certainly interviewed and Wallach was probably interviewed, that leaves up to four guys who we may not know about.
  12. The list of candidates has been pared from eight to four, though the names of the four aren't known, according to Haudricourt. The four finalists will be involved in a second round of interviews within the next week. Attanasio will be involved with those interviews. As is the popular conjecture, Bob Melvin is probably one of the four. Doug Melvin also confirmed he had spoken with eight guys, which tacitly confirms that not all candidates have been made public.
  13. I suppose Zack with a "k" makes more sense anyway. Fixed. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. Here's today's Gameday Link as the Surprise Rafters visit the hated Peoria Saguaros. Hunter Morris is not only in the starting lineup for the Rafters, but he's starting at third base and playing there for the first time in his short pro career. Caleb Gindl is in the lineup, playing LF. Michael Fiers is making his second AFL start of the year.
  15. My domination of this thread continues... Makes more sense now why Hinton decided to re-sign here - he was invited to big league spring training along with Rivera, per McCalvy. And then with his next tweet, McCalvy reports that the Brewers have also re-signed Milwaukee native and 2010 Huntsville Star 1B/3B Chris Nowak to a minor league deal, though with no spring training invite for Chris.
  16. After I asked, Haudricourt confirmed w/Gord Ash that Rivera indeed received an invite to big league spring training.
  17. Familiarity is one thing, and the Brewers have no depth at catcher beyond Lucroy and Kottaras. The only two catchers they had above A-ball before the signing were Anderson Delarosa and Patrick Arlis - both guys are more likely to see the major leagues as coaches. As of right now, he is without a doubt the "guy" they would get from AAA.
  18. I didn't realize Wallach was 53... for some reason I had him pegged as about 10 years younger in my head. I'd guess 43-45 is on the younger end of the age scale of current major league managers.
  19. BA Transactions page. We already knew that Stern was granted free agency, but we did not know that the Brewers re-signed perennial Huntsville Star RHP Robert Hinton and former Milwaukee C Mike Rivera. I would hazard a guess that Rivera was given a spring training invite. Kind of surprised to see that there was mutual interest with Hinton - thought a change of scenery would have been good for the slider specialist.
  20. Depending on the 2 still as-yet-unnamed guys that were interviewed in Arizona last week, I'm beginning to wonder if the Brewers are leaning in the direction of hiring a younger manager and putting a seasoned manager in the bench coach role. Depending on Bob Melvin's amenability to the situation, I could see Wallach being the manager with Melvin as bench coach. They convinced Randolph to do the job, so there's some precedent. I could live with Wallach/Melvin, plus Sandy Guerrero as hitting coach.
  21. Update on Tim Wallach from ESPNLosAngeles.com. "That means if Wallach isn't hired by the Brewers, who reportedly are interviewing about 10 candidates to replace Ken Macha, he will be part of the Dodgers' staff in 2010, probably as third-base coach." Haudricourt says Listach and Cora will interview Tuesday.
  22. I didn't say I wanted him to sign him to an extension before trading for him, I said I wanted to talk about one. If there was some interest on his side of staying in Milwaukee beyond the end of his current deal, I'd be more likely to give up 3-4 big pieces for him.
  23. Before I'd finalize a deal for Greinke, I'd want to be able to talk to him about an extension.
  24. A few days after Valentine said "no" to the Marlins, the Mariners say "no" to Valentine. If the Brewers are interested, the list of openings for Valentine is certainly shortening.
