  1. Gamel is indeed starting tonight in LF for the Brewers.
  2. I heard that, too, but I wouldn't read anything in to it. He was talking about "young" players. The first three players he mentioned were actually Escobar, Cain and Gomez. He had to be prompted by Anderson to mention Lucroy. All four of those guys are quite a bit younger than Weeks... Weeks is 28.
  3. The Cubs lost too? We can't get to #9 overall without some help, northsiders.
  4. Maybe regression to the mean? They aren't a good tea, but they probably weren't .314 winning % bad.
  5. Davis pitched terribly, but he pitched so few innings that his overall impact on the club, outside his hit on the payroll (which I'm not trying to downplay) was minimal. Garland pitched alright this year, but with the Brewers' infield defense behind him, he probably would have fared about as well as Randy Wolf.
  6. I wouldn't mind seeing Sandy Guerrero get a chance to manage. He's well respected by the Brewers, and the Brewers players. He's never managed though, so he's probably a long shot.
  7. Huff got jobbed by Bucknor on the 3-1 count... that pitch was at least a few inches low, and it's not like he was calling that pitch a strike all night. I love watching Axford pitch. He's kind of the anti-Turnbow hard thrower. Always calm and composed, just with a goofy mustache. Lucroy had a heckuva game. He must have blocked 8 pitches in the dirt during that 5th inning alone. He's gotten noticeably better with his blocking as the year has progressed.
  8. Not that I was expecting much, but Nichols answered my "pitchers who are under the radar" question with Heckathorn, Scarpetta and Peralta.
  9. They do compete against other teams, they just aren't formal games.
  10. Given Hawn's strikeout rate in Helena, I'm not sure he would have done any better than Morris in Appleton. I think this debate won't have some clarification until some time next year. Garman (despite his walk totals) and Marzec are definitely on my radar, as is Neda. The Brewers sure seem to be stockpiling good groundball pitchers.
  11. For what I hope is not the last time I say this during this decade: THE BREWERS WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!
  12. Brian Garman on to close out an 11-run lead in the bottom of the 9th. Fingers crossed... I'm hooked on Howard's Pizza.
  13. Hawn has now knocked in 8 runs as he adds a 2-RBI single in the 5th. Wow. 12-0 Helena. Edit: The Raptors' pitching coach is named Kremlin Martinez. Hah! Edit 2: Extra point is good, Helena up 14-0, still in the 5th.
  14. I agree with you that 2012 looks like it could be "the year" for this team if management doesn't screw it up too badly, but to play devil's advocate here, if this team without Rogers has an upside of 85 wins, couldn't a marginal win make a pretty big difference? It's not likely, though not unheard of, for 86 wins to get you in to the postseason.
  15. The Office and Fringe are really the only two we'll really get around to watching. Maybe Running Wilde.
  16. FWIW, he was between 91-93 on the fastball out of the pen today. 100 may not be out of the question, but I also think it's something we'll rarely see as he's asked to sacrifice a little velocity to gain the control he'll need to succeed as a starter.
  17. With a man on first and one out, Lee hit a hard grounder to third and dogged it down the line. McGehee threw it to Weeks, whose feet got tangled with the guy sliding. It looks like Weeks assumed he wouldn't even be able to make a throw, but he looked at first, took a second to set himself, and still got Lee by at least a full step. It was ridiculous. Bill Schroeder could have turned that double play in the time it took for Lee to get to first.
  18. Lee just got down to first slower than Bengie Molina after eating a #8 from McDonalds. That was truly embarrassing.
  19. Also broken up by Johnson, Wallace, Sanchez, Castro, Bogusevic and Keppinger in the 5th. Yikes. Brewers have given up 6 runs so far in the 5th.
  20. Just wanted to toss this info in here, albeit a few days late and now a moot point: This article at Hardball Times, and this article at Fangraphs that dovetails on the previous article shows that the Texas League is almost exactly in the middle of the pack in baseball in terms of runs scored, and in 2010 actually had the least number of average runs scored amongst the three AA leagues. I had just assumed that the Texas League was still a big hitter's league, but I guess not. The Hardball Times article does make me think we should think about moving out of the Pioneer League sometime soon, though. The Appalachian League or the Northwest League would look better to me.
  21. Like all high Brewers pitching draft picks, he will be developed as a starter and will learn a change-up come hell or high water. His potential intrigues me, though the combination of a "flat" fastball and one (apparently) non-dominant breaking pitch is going to temper my enthusiasm. I think a funky delivery can be intimidating to hitter in a lower level like the Pioneer League, and with all the rest they've given him, he's probably hitting closer to 95 than 92, and that's usually enough to get out rookie ball hitters. So, the biggest questions I want to see answered about him before he sniffs the Power 50's top 10 are: if he's developed as a starter, how does his velocity hold up and can he develop that third pitch?; and, however he's developed, will his odd mechanics allow him to both stay healthy and exhibit adequate control over a full season?
  22. Westbrook is a good groundball pitcher who has the same velocity he had before his injuries. If we could get him cheap for a year, sure.
  23. Hopefully we'll have a different reason to retire #49 in about 15 years. A player should have to have a Hall of Fame caliber career mostly spent in Milwaukee to even be in the conversation to have his number retired. Leading the team to a few World Series championships might be one of the very few caveats to that rule. Sheets is not going to the Hall of Fame and he won no World Series here, so he's a definite "no."
  24. I have an Ibanez bass and an Ibanez guitar (semi-hollow body, and I play metal on neither. Love the sound on both. So... play a number of guitars, and whatever feels right, go with it.
