  1. I'll go with Scott Diamond AND Ed Lucas. Then the Brewers will get Brad Emaus from the Blue Jays as the Villanueva PTNBL if he isn't taken.
  2. The rate standards that make demarcate a player's ineligibility for RoY voting are often used for prospect list cutoffs, too - 130 AB, 50 IP. A player with anything above that and Baseball America, the Power 50, and probably the FanGraphs guys, will them off prospect lists. RoY standards also have a service time element, but neither we nor BA use that for prospect lists.
  3. It's even possible the deal is non-guaranteed. Still not worked up about this.
  4. lcbj68c, can you post a link to where you got that info from?
  5. Minor has an upper 80's/low 90's FB with good movement, which he compliments with a plus changeup and an alright curveball. He has very good command/control and great pitching savvy. His upside is a #2/#3.
  6. How could it not happen? No contract details, but I'm just gonna assume it's a lifetime deal.
  7. If we don't have to give up Cain to get Garza, I wouldn't want to trade Cain for Upton. If all Garza costs is Jeffress/Gamel/Kintzler or Ke. Davis, do it yesterday.
  8. McCalvy guesses that the deal is for 1 year/less than $1 million.
  9. Apparently the Nieves signing is official, per Haudricourt. I bumped into some members of the Brewers' winter meetings party this morning and asked them about the late-night signing of catcher Wil Nieves. As previously noted, Nieves hasn't exactly set the world on fire in the major leagues, so I asked about the motivation behind the deal. The two words I got most were "depth" and "competition." So we don't know the details and the fact the contract is official is only tacitly stated, but I think it's safe to assume Nieves is a Brewer.
  10. The Brewers have the most interest in giving Lucroy the lion's share of ABs, which I assume will happen next year barring injury. No doubt that Nieves sucks, however he probably took slightly over the minimum to suck. I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. Except that I'm typing this at quarter of two in the morning, so maybe I am. Kottaras, as much as I love the guy, is horrific on defense. I'm going to assume that Nieves is at least modestly better, which is probably what the Brewers are looking for out of a backup catcher. That's all.
  11. The more likely thing is that he's just DFA'd. I hope they keep him around at least through spring training, and they don't need the 40-man space at the moment, but few teams keep more than 3 catchers on the 40-man (six clubs have four or more at the moment, not counting the Brewers).
  12. Assuming he'll be making about what he's been making the past few years, i.e. well under a million bucks, I don't have a big problem with this.
  13. I have the Brewers' 2011 payroll obligations right now at a little over $70M. That number doesn't include any of Wolf's deferred money or buyouts paid. I could be off by a few million either way, depending on how arbitration goes. Anyway, my point is... adding Garza and Upton would add somewhere between $8-$12 million to that (net of salaries sent to Tampa Bay). That probably puts the Brewers pretty close to as much money as they want to spend this year.
  14. I don't know that there is one. Jeffress/Braddock/Scarpetta/Kentrail Davis might get you sorta close.
  15. The Brewers won't have to trade Odorizzi to land Garza.
  16. I've mentioned this before, but my guess is that it would take something along the line of Cain/Jeffress and maybe Gamel for Garza. Garza still has 3 years of control left - he won't be cheap.
  17. I think that deal crosses the "making a deal just to make a deal" line of demarcation by plenty. No thank you. I'd rather keep Prince and get the picks.
  18. Gordon doesn't have a whole lot of value, but you're probably right about that. OTOH, Cain/Odorizzi/Jeffress sounds like it would come pretty darn close to netting Greinke, at least to me. They might have to add a Logan Schafer-level prospect too, but not that far off. The Brewers could probably even find a way to do it without trading Odorizzi. I say that because I think Cain tends to get undervalued a little... with his superior defense, great speed and a bat that's at least competent, he's really valuable. KC would love to have him.
  19. Tampa is interested in trading Garza and Upton because they're getting too expensive. They probably wouldn't be able to afford Fielder's contract.
  20. I like the trade and could love the trade if it leads to extensions for Weeks and Marcum, as others have noted. I would wait to extend Marcum until I've seen him pitch for a half season or so, but then I hope they can get something done. I'm not optimistic about the Brewers re-signing Weeks, but there's a chance. Lawrie is an elite hitting prospect and, following in a long line of Brewers hitting prospects, can't field. That makes him something less than an elite prospect, and the character issues don't help his cause. I'm quite sure he'll become a good hitter for the Jays, but I'm almost as sure his value will be mitigated by what he does in the field. And what he does in the field will almost certainly not be done at 2B, and probably not at 3B either.
  21. According to Cot's, Garza was a Super 2 last year (which is why he was arbitration eligible) and would have finished 2010 with under 4 years of service. That means he'd be under team control through 2013.
  22. Uehara is an outstanding pitcher, but he's going to get more money than the Brewers should pay for a middle reliever. At least for right now.
  23. Dickerson has a career .363 OBP against RHP. Link. A Dickerson/Gomez platoon would put up something in the neighborhood of a .330 OBP and play very good defense. I don't think platoons are ever ideal, but the Brewers could get by with it. Also, the Brewers are deepest prospect-wise in CF. Gindl, Schafer and Komatsu are all going to start 2011 at AA or above. I would hate to see the Brewers trade Cain, I like him a lot. They could stomach it and move on, though.
  24. Being discussed on the rumors forum.
  25. Now Jon Heyman disagrees with Jon Heyman: "Deal is done. A gon headed to #redsox. Press conf expected tomorrow"
