  1. See, I thought the newest episode was pretty stupid. Everything seemed forced.
  2. What if Mark DiFelice retired all nine men he faced, struck out six of them, and no one started a spring training IGT - would it have really happened?
  3. I wonder why I've had two of my posts deleted from this topic in the last two days? Posts that only say "I agree" or "great post" are usually deleted. The theory being, if everyone who agreed posted "I agree", threads would become unreadable. Back to the thread, John Dewan just made an interesting point, saying that he believes he has some statistical proof that defense is worth about half as much as offense. If that is true, it gives a little objectivity to the argument for keeping Hardy over Escobar IMO. Even if Escobar's defense is somehow twice as good as Hardy's (which it probably isn't), Hardy far outstrips Escobar in value due to JJ's advantage with the bat. Jettison seems like a loaded word there. I don't think anybody is advocating jettisoning Hardy. Get rid of, let go, trade, ship off, package, embark, whatever wording you want to use - replacing Hardy with Escobar means Hardy isn't here anymore.
  4. The problem with assigning 2-3 wins to an unnamed $15 mil player from the free agent market is evident in your list above. Lackey will probably be resigned, and if he isn't he might get more than $15 mil, even in the bad market to come. Brian Roberts already signed an extension and Chipper Jones probably will, too. Escobar didn't pitch last year. That leaves Jason Bay, who would theoretically replace Mike Cameron in the outfield. After replacing Cameron's offensive production with Bay's, and after allowing for the decrease in outfield defensive production by replacing Cameron's defense with Hart's (as well as switching Braun to RF), I don't know that it's a locked-in 2 or 3 win improvement. Obviously that's all just anecdotal based on the next free agent class, but the point would be the same in the future. The Brewers could also just spend the ~$15 mil saved on Hardy for salary increases for guys already on the club, or a number of lesser free agents. Hardy is a much better player right now than Escobar. It would take an overwhelming showing by Escobar in AAA to convince me that the Brewers should jettison one of the top few shortstops in the game in order to possibley upgrade elsewhere, save some cash and take a chance on another young kid. The Brewers will have 2009 to get a better grasp of the situation. Like others have said, it's a wonderful problem to have.
  5. I just read that, too. He's right - the rule is, you get a fourth option year if you've exhausted three option years before your fifth full year as a pro. Going in to this season, Iribarren will only have four and change. Surprised that no one (including myself) picked up on that before now. And this effectively drops the probability of Iribarren making the team to 0%.
  6. The exclamation point is just for exciting, important, non-transaction news. It is used sparingly, so as not to devalue its exclamatory underpinnings.
  7. I bet the Brewers want to get Green stretched out as a starter in AAA. If he can develop into at least a serviceable back of the rotation guy, that holds a lot more value in the long run than him occupying one of the last few spots in the bullpen out of camp. If neither Gagne nor Looper are on the opening day roster, I would guess one of Coffey/Julio and two of Morlan/DiFelice/Swindle/Dillard/Gulin (in that order of likelihood) make the team. So the pitching staff would look like: SP: Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan, McClung RP: Hoffman, Villanueva, Stetter, Riske and the three choices above If Gagne makes the team, I think Coffey or Julio have a much tougher time breaking camp with the club. If Looper makes the team without Gagne, then only one of those guys from the second group would be likely to make it, IMO. Barring any additional injuries, JJ's position players look about right to me.
  8. I don't see a rule in the CBA or on Cot's that says you can't put a guy on the DL in spring training. The other work-around in your scenario is that Edmonds could have a guaranteed minor league contract that would pay him $1 million regardless of whether he made the team or not, with an opt out around Opening Day for if he doesn't make the major league team.
  9. I am pretty sure he is playing 3rd today. Kendall is catching. Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention as to if he previously played C.According to the box score on mlb.com, Rivera is catching and McGehee is playing 3B. McGehee has played some catcher in the minors, though he'd only play there in an emergency or otherwise weird circumstances on the Brewers.
  10. Attanasio came to the number using the club's accounting for salaries they'll have to likely pay during the year, which includes some of the bonuses, as well as salaries for guys not currently on the team. While the team that breaks camp might only have a collective payroll sans bonuses in the low $80 mil range, they'll end up paying at least $87-$90 mil in contracts this year unless they dump salary. You can't just look at the present nominal value of contracts when determining payroll level.

  18. Acceptable/unacceptable behavior is addressed in detail in the Rules of Conduct, Three Strikes and You're Out, Keep Brewerfan Beautiful, Quoting Messages and the In-Game Thread Rules. The information in those threads is 99.9% comprehensive in the reasoning for issuing strikes and bans. That being the case, it's our opinion that it is not productive to spell out the grizzly details of each or any individual strike or ban. As for BCU, it's not my call, but I think if you make a plausible promise (eating a hat is clearly hyperbole), you should expect to be held to that promise. In life, and especially on a message board, you're only as good as your word.

  20. I was going to guess Rutherford B. Hayes until I saw the lapel mic.
  21. Bush is limited to 20 pitches, but I don't think he threw more than 8 or 9 in the 3rd inning, so he might go back out there.
  22. Kevin Bacon.
  23. A few years ago, Will Inman faced Josh Outman in a Southern League game.
