  1. More good news... a liquor store by my house is closing to move to a new location and they have all their prices greatly reduced. I just got a liter of Johnnie Walker Black for $25. Yay!
  2. I would submit one cover letter/resume per company. Once HR reads your info, they'll have a good idea of what to do with you. If they have to read it twice, they'll get confused. Just make sure your intentions are clear in your cover letter.
  3. I hear Forrest Whitaker will play Prince Fielder.
  4. That's what it looks like on my iPhone too... navigating the message board is ok, but typing in the reply box in nigh-impossible. If you quote anything, the markup code is parsed into the reply and typing has always been really slow into the reply box. Occasionally, Safari has even shut down as I've tried to type something out. So iPod/iPhone viewing = ok, typing = not good, at least for me.
  5. If nothing else, Glavine might be able to teach Parra, Cappy, the Wright brothers, et al, something about lefty pitching even if he only gives us 150 innings or so. But he may not fit in the budget, so probably not.
  6. I want the next throwback night to be whenever the Orioles next come to Miller Park. We can wear the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers unis and complain about the Orioles not retiring John Anderson's number. Without him, the '01 Brewers may not have even won 48 games.
  7. My PS3 broke on Monday, was shipped to Sony on Tuesday, they shipped a replacement on Wednesday and it arrived here today. Now as long as it works... Ratchet and Clank Future awaits.
  8. You win with pitching and defense You win by scoring more runs than the other team. Tom Glavine and the Braves might not be able to work anything out... according to MLBTR, he's looking for $3 mil guaranteed with another $3 mil in performance bonuses. It might be more for us, but it's something to think about the longer he goes unsigned.
  9. I was coming here to post just that. I don't know why, but I think that's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on this show. It was more classically Dwight, not the bizarre Dwight that's mostly been present the past few years.
  10. He looks like a cross between Ted Nugent and Stan Lee.
  11. The fiance and I are looking to buy a house this summer and in the course of our house shopping, we've come across quite a few interesting/disturbing/funny photos, but this one... well: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/ccb15d4698d79a20171f8189d148160b894c526.jpg I am curious as to who would become more interested in buying this house after seeing that. Does it come with the little can thing under the sink?
  12. Wright has never thrown as many as 146 innings in a season in his minor league career, so if we lean on him as a starter, he's going to be maxed out after 170 innings or so. He's a fringe back-end of the rotation guy without an above-average pitch. Meh. Fryer was buried behind Salome, Lucroy and Lawrie and it's better to have some more depth. Still, meh. Edit: FWIW, I believe Wright has one option left.
  13. No, options never expire. Players are optioned when they are sent from the major league roster to a minor league roster. Every player gets (at least) 3 option years - during these years, they may be optioned up and down an unlimited number of times. If a player is not optioned to the minor leagues from the major leagues, a player's option is not used. Ryan Braun has never been optioned, so he still has all three of his option years, even though it's highly unlikely he'll ever be optioned.
  14. Link to JS Blog. No word yet on the contract figure for Weeks. It'll be in the neighborhood of $2.4 mil. The contract is worth $2.45 mil, with another $75K possible in performance bonuses. Rogers will get a major league salary of $400K, but barring something miraculous happening he'll pitch in the minors and will get paid a minor league salary of quite a bit less. 25 of the 39 players on the 40-man roster are now under contract. Edit: Updated with salary info.
  15. I doubt Gwynn's option status has any great bearing on whether or not he makes the club out of spring training. Losing Gwynn on waivers is probably far down the list of things the Brewers wish will never happen. As X said, he just can't hit, plus his defense is just pretty good and he's not as fast as many people seem to think that he is.
  16. It might not be completely accurate, but I don't understand the question about Hall and Gwynn. Hall has been sent down to the minors in two different years and Gwynn has been sent down in three different years.
  17. Yes, when you're out of options and taken off the major league roster, you are placed on waivers and designated for assignment. Here's Brewerfan's 40 man roster page, with option data. Anyone with a "0" under the option column would have to pass through waivers. There are some nuances to the rules... veterans with so much (I forget how much) major league service time also would have to pass through waivers even though they have options left.
  18. I agree that baseball is an athletic sport, certainly more athletic than golf. However, I think you'd agree that baseball is a much less athletic sport than football - say, halfway in between football and golf on the athletic continuum, and is also less athletic than basketball, hockey or soccer. Would it also be fair to say that the skill level to play baseball or football at a high level is more or less equal, although the skill set needed for either is quite a bit different? With those assumptions, I think it would be fair to say that that skill plays a more important role in baseball than it does in football, based on it's relationship to the athleticism needed in the two sports. And that's what makes baseball much more interesting to me - the skill of the players shine through and is not lost (at least to some degree) in the morass of 21 other large athletes on the field.
  19. You don't have to count it as income, but you do need to know how much you received - you might be eligible for a stimulus tax credit if your 2008 tax situation differs from 2007 (the year the stimulus payments were based on). For more information and a worksheet (if you're doing your taxes on paper), go to page 61 of the instructions for form 1040. You'll input the result on line 70 of the 1040, or line 42 on the 1040A.
  20. You must have missed the part where FtJ said: and if the pitcher has good off-speed -- it is then really a function of guessing correctly and not skill as much. I do tend to agree with you, though... hitting a baseball is an incredibly difficult thing to do. Even when Turnbow was throwing batting practice last year, almost 60% of batters were still getting out when they (incorrectly?) decided to not take the walk. Guessing definitely goes in to it, but I would say that guessing in the batter's box is a skill in and of itself. Rickie Weeks is terrible at guessing and Albert Pujols is great at guessing.
  21. Already being discussed here.
  22. Patrick - if you're going to be using the laptop for a long period of time while you're near a plug in, just take the battery out. When I had a Dell laptop, I would always just leave the battery in even though it was plugged in on my desk. I learned that with many computers, even though the laptop is plugged in, it still is "charging" the battery as the battery charge is pretty much full. This wears on the battery over time and really reduce it's charge life. When I got a new battery for it, I just took the battery out if I was near an easily accessible outlet and the battery lasted for a much, much longer charge at a time when I needed it. Have you installed a new antivirus program (or other program that runs continuously in the background) recently? That hung my laptop up on "prepare to standby" mode a few times before I figured out what the problem was.
  23. After thinking about the episode some more, Oscar screaming in Spanish at Michael was nearly as funny as Michael's Stanley roast.
  24. I thought the Jack Black/Cloris Leachman thing was actually sort of funny, just out of place. I liked the whole thing, though the teaser was one of the funniest things they've ever done and the whole first half was a little better. My favorite line was from the second half: "Stanley, you crush your wife during sex and your heart sucks... boom. Roasted." My fiance and I accidentally woke up our daughter laughing at that.
  25. I don't care that he's a Cub announcer, or a Cub fan - if he's a good radio announcer for the Brewers, that's good enough for me. The little Brewers radio I've listened to in the past few years, however, will be cut back even more without Powell in the booth. I wonder if they tried to get Pat Hughes back? He and Powell are the only two Uecker straight men the Brewers have employed in my lifetime (and I barely remember Hughes) so it's gonna be weird to have anyone else, even if he is good.
